First one: Gene goes for a sympathy ploy to get Lin to answer his questions. (“I don’t remember my real father very well, but I think he was tall like you”)

Second: Not knowing how to talk to the twins, Lin decides to reveal that he knows Japanese, but it comes out as broken Japanese.

Writing Research - Victorian Era

In historical fiction it is important to be accurate and the only way to do so is to research the era. What is highly recommended by many writers is to write your story first. While writing your story, mark the parts that you’re not sure are correct and then do the research after you are done. This is to prevent you from doing unnecessary research that may not be relevant to your work. You want to spend your time wisely! Or you can just research as you go, it’s really whatever works for you since there isn’t a “wrong” way to research.

To begin, the Victorian era of the British history (and that of the British Empire) formally begins in 1837, which was the year Victoria became Queen and ends in 1901 – the year of her death. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence for Britain. Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act 1832. Could you help this sad boi out? See reading all of these fanfics, I'm unsure to how Naru's Psychometry actually works. Some say he goes limp and he "dreams" the visions, some say he just closes his eyes and the visions appear very quickly. Does Naru's psychometry ever get detailed/explained in canon? Or if not, is there anything that alludes to how it *would* work? Thanks! m(_ _)m

I sure can! Naru’s psychometry gets explained in Vol 8 of the original novels. Later in the sequel novels, Naru actually uses his psychometry and we get to read all about it. The truth is, it varies and depends on how strong the emotion on an object is and how well Naru syncs with the subject. I talked a little about Naru’s psychometry in my post Possible Implications of Naru’s Vision of Gene, but I’ll go ahead and quote directly here for you as there is a bit more.

First, here in Vol 8, Chapter 12.4, Lin explains a little:

“Moreover, Naru is too capable. If the person he’s looking for is dead, it’s fine if he only sees it as mere information. But if the synchronization with the target is intense, he apparently experiences it as if it’s his own personal experience.”

Ayako and Masako looked back at me simultaneously.

“Mai had a dream like that once…”

Is it like that?

“Sometimes, in severe cases, he actually gets injured.”

“Injured?”

‘Yes,’ Lin-san nodded.

“When experiencing a vision, a severe bruise is produced in the same spot where the person he’s synchronizing with was injured and a strong paralysis develops… Therefore, Naru will not use psychometry unless the situation is serious. He sent back all the letters without opening them.”

-GH Vol 8: I Don’t Mind Evil Spirits! Part 2, Chapter 12.4

Here is Naru talking about syncing with Gene in Vol 8 Ch 13.4:

“Gene left for Japan and was about half-way through his scheduled stay. When I borrowed his clothes, I suddenly synced with him.”

“Synced?”

“To assimilate with the target person while using psychometry.”

“Like the dream I once had?”

“Right.”

I couldn’t stand experiencing that over and over again. I would certainly hate using psychometry.

“Suddenly? You didn’t do something trying to sync with him deliberately?”

“That kind of intention isn’t always necessary. Rejecting it requires will, however. ”

“Oh…”

“I think the first thing I saw was a mountain. On that mountain during the day as I was walking there on the road, I heard a car coming from behind. As I turned around, I could see the car that had rounded the curve drive farther and farther toward the outside. It raced straight towards me, then there was an impact and I collapsed. As I was lying on the asphalt, someone got out of the stopped car.”

“…Uh-huh.”

“It was a woman. I could only see her below the knee, though. She panicked and, after screaming, returned to her car. After a moment, I could hear the sound of the car moving and approaching me from behind…”

I choked back something bitter. If that’s the case, then that woman finished Gene off. Without a doubt… you could say he was murdered…

“From there on, the vision developed a green halation. That’s characteristic of when the target is dead. I was dragged along the ground and loaded into the trunk of the car. In a place somewhere like a garage, I was wrapped in a silver tarp. That was thrown into a lake from atop a boat—”

-GH Vol 8: I Don’t Mind Evil Spirits! Part 2, Chapter 13.4

And finally, here is his experience from Akumu no Sumu Ie, Ch 9.3:

Naru sat down on the floor and placed his back against the wall. He took several cards from inside the box. He concentrated his conscious onto his fingertips.

He quickly sensed an irregularity. There was no need to exert himself at all.

– Is that so.

Naru secretly felt sorry.

– The owner is a child.

It was easy to synchronize with a child. Moreover, very strong emotions were inscribed into it considering how easy it was to go in.

– This is… … bad.

Before he knew it, he was tormented by the feeling of rapidly falling down. It was the sensation of crashing down into a deep hole, while at the same time losing that feeling temporarily, and then randomly returning to it as if being inserted like a piece in a jigsaw puzzle. There was not even one time to take a single breath.

The first thing he saw was a faint light tinged with green. That color was, as if he was wearing a color filter, a color that’s characteristic of the deceased.

– This child is dead.

-The House in Which Nightmares Dwell Part 2, Ch 9.3 (translation by @yonakayaku)

Actually, here’s a bit more of him coming out of his vision in Akumu Ch 9.5:

“– Naru!”

He opened his eyes and sensed the tatami mat below his cheek. His eyesight was blurry. He had a terrible headache.

“Are you alright?”

“Just barely made it…” he said to himself.

“– Naru?”

“… … I’m fine.”

There was a hand on his shoulder, but when the fingertips lightly lifted up it got the better of him. It felt like he could throw up if he moved his body right now.

“No need to worry. … … My body just got shocked somewhat.”

After blinking a couple of times and waiting for his vision to clear up, he moved. Lin’s worried face was nearby.

“Naru –?”

“A child was killed here.”

-The House in Which Nightmares Dwell Part 2, Ch 9.5 (translation by @yonakayaku)

That’s everything I can think of about Naru’s psychometry at the moment. Oh wait, there’s some mention in a short story. Let me go grab that, too.

This is from Confessions for a White Crow:

“Right. He willingly played the part of the clown; as if entertaining at a party, he would make a gentleman’s lighter move, or reveal the romantic past hidden within a lady’s accessory. Half of it would be the truth, and half of it would be trickery or made-up nonsense. He would do things like that without a care. And so, he gathered together an incredible number of supporters, pulled money from them, and began an exasperating form of ghost hunting.”

-Confession for a White Crow (translation by @csakuras)

Also, I like this part about Eugene showing signs of psychometry, but it was actually Naru sending him info through their bond:

“Eugene had shown an ability similar to psychometry. But Eugene always said that his ‘neighbor from the other side of the door’ gave him the information. For close to two years, we did not know that this meant Oliver.”“This time you all became obsessed with Oliver.”“That’s right. A powerful Twin Channel existed between the twins. Oliver was an exceedingly capable psychometrist, and what’s more, possessed PK. His PK ability was extraordinary, and using the Twin Channel as an intermediary, functioned in a way so curious as to be unprecedented.”

-Confession for a White Crow (translation by @csakuras)

Okay, that’s it. Basically, it depends. Sometimes it’s just impressions, other times it’s really intense visions. And sometimes it happens without choice. I hope this helps!

I just can't agree that Vincent and Rachel are good parents. If they were there is no way OCiel would have such low self-esteem. If he were raised feeling loved he wouldn't have pretended to be his twin because he felt his twins existence was worth more than his own. His aunt referred to him as a spare. Diedrich told him he has to fend for himself even though he was only 7 years old. OCiel was constantly left out of every family activity. Maybe it's not abuse, but that's neglectful parenting.

It’s… up for debate then. I can’t change your mind, but I can’t fully agree either. Maybe there were things they’ve done wrong… but I don’t think they were bad parents, in general. We’re absolutely not talking about any sort of abuse - verbal or physical - and neglectful parenting.. I don’t know. I don’t think so? The reason he was often inside was because playing outside with the others would truly be harmful to him, and I know this for sure. They must have thought it was the best for him. Maybe it was a bad idea to leave him all alone inside… but he was also often with the family, too. Vincent took them both out and read to both of them. I wouldn’t say they were neglectful…

Diedrich, what Diedrich told him I think was the best, I think. He took it well too.

image

He began making other plans for himself, dreaming his own dreams. I think it was alright.

With Frances, uuuf. It’s a whole other business. It’s all quite sad. On one side, it’s clear that she didn’t mean any harm, and she was trying to make a huge point at that time (that our Ciel should have been trained better), but, on the other side, the word ‘spare’ was much too harsh on the child. He took it way too hard on himself - and you seriously can’t blame him. At the end of the day, it’s a mix of the writer’s intentions, the reality of the time, and Frances being too… hmm, harsh? Overall, I just think sensei needs to work on Frances’ character a bit more, and polish it properly, do it well.

Yeah. While, with Frances, I can understand where you’re coming from, with Vincent and Rachel, it’s best to agree to disagree. :D I will look some more into 131-133, just in case, but yeah. Thank you for the message!

Why were the twins left alive

This question is a question that interests everyone, and I thought of sharing my take on it:

It was all a test.

Previously I suggested that the Queen might always be watching her Watchdog, the Phantomhive Earl. You can find the post with that theory here. There I explained how I think the queen has always been watching our earl, since he returned from the demonic cult, all the way until now - however, I also believe she might’ve been watching over him (and his brother) from the moment they left the Phantomhive mansion.

In fact, I believe that the twins were left alive with one purpose - to test them to see if either of them was strong enough to become the new Watchdog.

Also, this theory does not necessarily go with the RCMT, but also not against it. It works both ways.

How I believe everything went down after Vincent was killed

It is clear that the queen needs a Watchdog. Whatever Vincent did - or refused to do - was something so bad that he simply couldn’t be left alive. I personally believe that people aren’t killed when they don’t do something - they’re killed when they know too much.

With Vincent dead, the Queen would need another Watchdog. The twins - especially the heir, Ciel Phantomhive - were young, but the Queen thought that, perhaps, they were capable. They had it in their blood.  So she figured she should test them: let the twins, who don’t know what their father knows, alive. Kidnap them and sell them to child traffickers, then keep an eye on them to see if they are capable of returning to their rightful place.

Here things could take a turn: the queen might or might have not sent them to the cult on purpose. She might have ordered her servants to give them to the child traffickers and it just happened that the man from the cult got to them, or she might have planned everything, including that the twins would get to the cult - to make it an even harsher experience and see if either of them is truly capable of making it out alive, of becoming the Watchdog.

Once the twins got to the cult, the servant(s) of the queen kept on watching them, to see what would become of them. One of them, most likely John Brown, was there the night Sebastian was summoned and saw the whole thing. Most likely the servant also saw our!Ciel taking the identity of his older brother and informed the queen of this matter.

However, I don’t think she cares about that. The only thing that interested her was that someone strong enough returned to take over the duty of the Watchdog. Whichever twin it was, I don’t think she cares. Had both twins returned, naturally the older twin, the heir, would take the title and the duty. Had neither twin returned - it’s a matter for another post. It’s coming soon after this one.

Perhaps this was also part of the reason why all the other Phantomhive servants had to be killed, so no one would help the twins, search for them or save them. Also why Tanaka wasn’t killed - but was injured. Tanaka, although he’s probably the one who knows the most in the story, and although he most likely also knows the identity of the mastermind, he has the duty of serving and preserving the Phantomhive bloodline. That’s why he says he cannot die before his master - there must always be a master to serve for a Phantomhive butler.

image

There must always be a Watchdog.

Following up, I present a few clues that support/made me consider my theory. Do check them out if you’re interested. If not, then thank you for reading this far!

Clue 1: The twins were left alive on purpose

This couldn’t be any clearer. Whoever attacked the Phantomhive mansion had orders to leave the twins alive. In fact, in this post I also suggest the possibility that:

I believe there were two attackers not necessarily because both of them had to kill, but maybe because one was in charge of retrieving the twins.

image

Now why do I say they absolutely had to have orders to leave the twins alive? Well:

1) The attackers were too cruel to feel pity for the children. I don’t think it’s a matter of mercy.

2) If they wanted to kill them, they would have killed them on the spot, not taken them away.

3) If somebody else (an ally of Vincent, someone like Undertaker or Frances) had found them, I don’t think the children would have gotten to the traffickers.

So yeah. The only way I see it is that they were left alive on purpose.

Clue 2: There is a suspicious person present the night the twins were supposed to be sacrificed, who looks as if they were watching the whole thing

image

That person, basically. And I strongly believe that was one of the servants of the queen - most likely John Brown. A very important detail about this person: it looks like they are completely unfazed by Sebastian’s summoning, and they’re just observing how things went down. The fact that a demon just showed up doesn’t surprise them at all, which is… weird. Probably any regular human being would have, at least, been surprised. But they don’t seem surprised nor scared in the slightest.

Clue 3: Our Ciel didn’t have to pass any special tests when he returned to take the title

Remember how the queen tested our Earl’s abilities and loyalty in the Book of murders arc? That entire arc was a test, after the Circus act, to see if our Earl ‘still had what it needed to be the Watchdog of the queen’. However, upon his return from the cult, his abilities and loyalty were never tested. But how could that be?

Would the queen be foolish enough to give a child the duties of a Watchdog and have him killed immediately? Certainly not. She must have been absolutely certain that he was capable.

Clue 4: The Queen never referred to our young master directly by the name of “Ciel”

Except for that one letter when he just returned, but, when addressing him directly, I don’t think she’s ever called him “Ciel”.  She’s called him, instead, her dear boy or just Earl Phantomhive. Do correct me if I’m wrong.

image

Clue 5: In the whole time when there wasn’t a Watchdog, the queen didn’t make a single move to name another person - it’s like she was waiting to see what would happen

The twins were at the cult for an entire month. It’s true that it was around Christmas and the New Year, so maybe it was just convenient, but I still think is seems like she was waiting to see if either twin could, actually, escape the cult.

These are the main clues that got me to this theory. If I think of more, I will reblog and add to them. Thank you very much for reading all of this. Any thoughts on it? I welcome any comments, agreements or disagreements, as long as you keep in my mind it’s nothing but a theory - no need to take it personally. ^^

I read somewhere saying that Naru is based on a real person according to Ono-sensei. I was wondering if you knew anything seeing as you research quite a lot about Ghost Hunt. It'd be very surprising and awesome to know if that person exists🐯

Hello! I would like to apologize for the extreme lateness of this since I haven’t checked my inbox for so long. 😅But anyway, YES! Naru and Gene are based on a real person/people. They are possibly based on and/or named after Andrew Jackson Davis, a spiritualist. His name, which can be shortened to A.J., is probably where Gene got the J.A. on his English name. Naru on the other hand could be based on and named after Edgar Cayce , a researcher (for the E.C. in his English name), too. 😊

Odds and Ends

A Ghost Hunt short story,

Noll asked, “Why are you here?”

The boy, older than him but still young enough to look out of place in the spacious SPR office, shrugged. “A test or something? They told me to talk to some doctor. I’m guessing that’s you.”

Noll scowled, but not at the underlying jest of the question. He was used to people questioning his expertise. “Indeed,” he said, “but why are you here?” The question was moot; he already knew why.

The boy sitting across from him was Lyle Mund, a chemistry student from Queen’s College. He was supposedly the catalyst in a series of events stemming from a demonstration of the Light Box and a otherwise unachievable score.

“I don’t know,” Lyle said, “you’re the doctor here.”

Noll sighed. The ‘test’ he was referring to was a rather simple one; guess which light will turn on next. The odds are, more or less, even. Given enough chances, the average human will be wrong 50% of the time. Noll remembered, rather fondly, proving his Japanese assistant was psychic using that very test. Except, where she had failed, Lyle seemed to succeed.

“97% success rate on a game of chance. That is a mathematical impossibility.”

Lyle shrugged. “It was luck.”

“Luck,” Noll said, “is subjective. Do you know what we study here at SPR?”

“I hear your guys in the parapsychology course get to go ghost hunting as an extra curricular.”

It was hard to deny that. All prospect hires at the University we’re invited to study SPR’s research methods. Most the time that included fielding active cases.

Lyle went on, “From what I’ve seen, it looks like you guys are going hard for the modern magician vibe. Card tricks, misdirection and all that.”

“SPR,” Noll started, “stands for the society for psychical research. We aim to understand events commonly described as paranormal. Ghost hunting is a part of that. We study mediumship, haunting, and the manifestation of psychic abilities.”

Noll knew the bemused look on his face well. The arched eyebrow was one of his favorites.

Lyle said, “You mean magic.”

“It’s only magic when you don’t understand what’s really happening.”

“Do you understand?”

Noll didn’t answer.

“I thought you looked the is-this-your-card type.” Lyle laughed, gathering his jacket. “Not interested but thanks for the talk.”

Noll watched him carefully.

On one hand, his skepticism could help them. SPR thrived on the disbelieving. It was easier to dismiss inexplicable phenomena when one didn’t exactly believe in it. Disappearing objects became forgetfulness, disembodied voices traced to a television accidentally left on.

On the other hand, SPR didn’t have a need for psychics unwilling to believe in their own abilities. That left Noll in a peculiar position. He dug in his pocket, flicking a small black and white object between his fingers. What if he could convince him?

Noll set the object on the table with a light chink.

Lyle eyed it sideways, halfway between his seat and the door. “What’s that?”

“One die.” Noll said, “Six sided. Would you like to roll it? Just once, then you can leave.”

Lyle rolled his eyes. “You can’t be serious.”

Noll frowned. He was always serious.

Lyle strode back and snatched the die from the table.

Noll said, “Call out a number.”

“What?”

“Before you roll, call out a number.” He urged, arms crossed. “One through six.”

“Three.” Lyle spit. He was annoyed, but that was okay. Noll just needed him to understand.

The die hit the table, once, twice, and spun to a stand still. Three solid black dots faced the ceiling.

Lyle stared at it for a full minute. “Coincidence,” he said.

“Could be.” Noll agreed, “Why don’t you try again? For good measure.”

Lyle hesitated.

Noll took advantage, reaching into his pocket. “What about two dice?” He set another black and white die beside the first. “The chances of rolling a pair of dice with the same number is 16.7%. That’s not exactly impossible, but the odds are against you.”

Lyle’s dark eyes cut Noll’s but the levity of his stare was something Noll was used to. He waited out the silence.

Slowly, eventually, Lyle picked up both dice, one by one, making a show out of checking they were the exact same.

“Number?”

“Again?”

“It doesn’t work if you don’t say a number.”

Lyle paused, fist over the table. “Three, he said again, “Wait no. Six.”

The dice collided with each other, sending themselves to opposing sides of the table. The die on the left showed six small black dots, the right, only three.

Lyle shook his head. “That’s not possible.”

“Why did you change your mind?”

“I don’t know. It just sounded stupid to say the same thing twice.”

Noll waved a hand producing four more die. “Three dice and the odds of rolling any number you call out falls to 1/36. What are the odds,” he said, setting them down one by one, “of six dice? I’d say there’s around 0.013% chance of guessing all six.”

Lyle laughed. “You’re crazy.”

“Hm.” Noll said. A smirk had already fixed itself to his smug face. “This is what we do here at SPR. We hypothesize, we research, and we gather data.”

Lyle glanced at the dice. “What does it mean?”

Noll blinked. He thought it was pretty self explanatory.

“What does it mean to guess right?” Lyle kept on.

“I guess that makes you a good guesser.”

“Seriously?”

Noll held his chin in his palm. “Call your number.”

Lyle thought hard, gathering the dice in his first. He held it steady over the table. “How many?”

“What do you think?”

Lyle said, “One,” and opened his hand.

All six dice landed in a kind of starburst pattern. They spun and thunked on the table before coming to a staggered standstill. Looking from the table to Noll then back to the table, Lyle couldn’t stop the disbelieving grin spreading over his face. Every dice showed a single small black dot.

“What,” Noll said, “are the odds?”

Last Week Shiho Inada Posted This New Illustration On Her Locked Account… And Today She Uploaded a

Last week Shiho Inada posted this new illustration on her locked account… and today she uploaded a new comic! But to get the joke behind it you’ll have to see this popular sketch by Japanese comedian Buruzon Chiemi: “Career Woman”. It’s a parody on a sassy career woman.

Original video with subtitles

English version of the skit

In a previous comic, Eugene made a prank video of him singing Piko Taro’s PPAP, while pretending to be Noll (who got very angry), and now…

image

Another present day joke

Gene: Every day you work desperately to hunt ghosts, but it’s still okay if you don’t rush yourself that much.

Do you know how many ghosts there are on Earth?

Noll (thinking): He learned something weird again…

Gene: 3.5 BILLION… and 50 million more*.

This is Buruzon Eugene with Li… – Wait a minute! Lin! Didn’t I tell you to stand behind me!

Lin (with 3.5 billion on his back): I properly declined, didn’t I?

Noll (turns around): And? Will you tell me the grounds of your argument of there being 3.5 billion and 50 million spirits?

Gene: Ah! It’s not like that, this is really popular right now!

Lin, help meee!

* The 50 million refers to the uneven ratio of males to females in the world.

I’ve started reposting ToshoSen translations on my website, but it seems it’ll take forever to format it right >_<

Here’s a preview of Index 1: http://www.fuyunoyo.com/index.php?file=Sections&op=article&artid=4

I know the website is in French so it’s not as intuitive as tumblr, but it should still be alright I think. I added page breaks to make it more legible and links to full size pics. Let me know if there’s anything you don’t like and I’ll try to fix it - otherwise I’ll keep uploading the rest of the chapters.

‘Geez, You Still Not Ready? Here Naru, Let Me Help You!’

‘Geez, you still not ready? here Naru, let me help you!’

‘You do remember we have plan with everyone right? and Monk-san performance almost starting, we gonna late!’

‘Thats why, we don’t need to hurry’

Mai let out a sigh, she know so bad that Naru doesn’t like a crowded place nor idea about Christmas party. But it’s been a while since everyone have time to gather like this, and though Mai can have fun even without Naru, she doesn’t like to imagine Naru being alone in Christmas… Is she being too selfish right now?

Looking at down spirited Mai, Naru frowned, then quickly finish his tea and put it down. He take office keys and walking toward the door. When he almost reach the door, he turned around.

‘Don’t you want to go? we almost late’

Why Ghost Hunt Is Great And Everyone Should Watch It: A Summary

It’s basically all of those ghost investigation shows only good.

The writers do their research into parapsychology and occult history and phenomena. They don’t just make shit up like pretty much every other supernatural horror series does.

Multiple religions and cultures are portrayed very earnestly and tastefully, with very little relying on stereotype. The Buddhist Monk, Shinto Preistess, and Catholtic Preist characters are all treated with respect and authority to their beliefs.

The main character gets called out and schooled on having had an Imperalist Japanese education. The tense history between China, Japan and particularly Hong Kong is brought up and not shied away from.

On that note all the main characters are shown to have their flaws and faults and short-comings.

When the main character discovers she has supernatural ability, she is automatically aware of the responsibilities and consequences these powers come with. She is regularly taken to task for using her powers when she doesn’t fully understand them. A character that could have been a ‘sue is instead given depth and development. It’s a lot like Pretear that way.

There are some great twists on old horror tropes– the reasons and explainations that come up for a lot of the hauntings are unique and unexpected (again, because the writers do their research.)

The Nightmare Fuel is counterpointed with some genuinely sweet, funny and heartwarming moments.

The writers are totally cool with letting side characters steal the spotlight or the scene.

There’s a lot of social commentary throughout the series that other series would shy away from. The main characters argue and disagree in some pretty horrendous ways because of this, and it’s handled fantastically.

Please watch Ghost Hunt, you’ll thank me.
