Why is Cale so lovable, actually? What's his secret??

Here's the thing: despite his flaws, KRS-Cale's charisma is insane, even for protagonist standards. Why is that?

Sure, it's a standard protagonist quality to use the ✨Power of Friendship✨ to save the day, but Cale has the unique ability to – completely unintentionally – turn EVERYONE around him into simps, sometimes even his enemies. And that, bizarrely, includes the audience. No don't lie to me, I've been in this fandom for a month already, I have eyes!

So, how does that keep happening, exactly??

To answer that question, allow me to first introduce you to a very important concept for healthy relationships: the 5 languages of love.

Words of affirmation

Quality time

Physical touch

Acts of service

Receiving gifts

A no, this does not apply only to romantic relationships - it's ALL relationships. Every person has their own preferences, both in showing and receiving them, usually 2 or 3 of them being the most important ones for a person. For example, I'm a "words" and "touch" person myself: I like hugs and people telling me they care about me. Pretty simple concept.

So, here's the thing. I've been re-reading TCF, and I came to a very important conclusion: Cale, completely by accident, absolutely excels at all five love languages.

It's so subtle you might not realize it at first. It does't sound like someone with such a closed personality, does it? It's especially confusing when you consider his background: an abused orphan who was pretty much always alone. But perhaps because he never recieved much affection growing up, he currently compensates by subconsciously sharing what he always wanted to receive, yet never got as a child. And because he ends up in a world where he's surrounded by abused children who didn't get enough affection, it's so darn effective, winning people's undying love and loyalty instantly.

Let's look at these one by one, shall we?

1. Words of affirmation

Cale has a tendency to accidentally say exactly what the listener needs to hear. But it's not all bluff, and not all luck. Cale is actually quite wise. He gives proper words of encouragement, based entirely on his knowledge and judgemment. For example: he tells Choi Han that he can protect people. He tells Raon that he should live freely and that he's great and mighty. He tells Alberu he deserves to rule the kingdom. He tells Mary not to "listen to nonsense". He tells Rosalyn she's reliable and capable. The list goes on and on.

Cale might not be saying "I love you" directly, but he is saying "Good job, take good care of yourself"... which pretty much amounts to the same thing.

2. Quality time

It might sound ridiculous, but... taking down Arm and saving the world is actually their perfect family quality time. Laugh if you want, but I'm serious! They're not a regular family, after all. They were all hurt, scarred and/or betrayed by the secret organization at some point. By destroying them and saving the world together, Cale not only gives his friends a purpose - he is also giving them closure. Revenge, retribution, healing, moving forward... it's all there. THAT'S some quality time!

3. Physical touch

While he's certainly not hugger or anything (not counting the Choi Han battle hug or Alberu's showman embraces, those were always an act), Cale is not averse to touching people either. Head pats for the children are quite common. Cale also touches people on the shoulder a lot, have you noticed? Like when Jack cried over Hannah, or when Cale congratulated Choi Han on a job well done after rescuing Raon. It's subtle, but it's there: his touch means support, affection and respect. It definitely counts.

4. Acts of service

Pretty much everything Cale does ends up helping other people, one way or another. Considering the sheer scale of Cale's actions, it's only natural that combined with the other love languages, it makes others feel great admiration towards Cale. He might not like it, because he sees those acts of service as "self-serving". But I think Cale was the most honest about it at the beginning of the story: when he gave On and Hong bread for the first time. "You don't need a reason for things your heart draws you to."

Cale actually, genuinely wants to help others. It's just he's so overworked already, he doesn't want the expectations and responsibility that comes with other people relying on him. As an orphan, he was made to believe that taking care of his own interests is inherently selfish, but somehow, he only applies that when thinking about himself. Despite everything, he actively encourages others to take care of themselves while neglecting himself. No wonder people love him.

5. Receiving gifts

Despite liking money so much, he's extremely generous. He lets go of five billions when selling Toonka – whom he "doesn't even like" – some documents back from the magic tower pretty much "just because". Sure, Alberu told him to do it, but Cale wouldn't listen to him if he didn't want to. You'd think his previous life of poverty would make him greedier than that. But while he steals from bad guys with no remorse, he gives to his allies freely with even less remorse. Sure, he expect them to "repay" him with their services, but you'd have to be blind not to notice how beneficial those deals are for everyone involved. And his kids? Cale downright spoils them. Sure he "scams" Raon by letting him pick one magic gemstone out of hundreds, or a single coin out of Alberu's pockets... but that's just responsible parenting more than anything.

And remember how he asked Basen and Lily what they wanted as a gift at the beginning? There was absolutely no ulterior motive to that: zero. He did it literally just because. Remeber when he gave Raon an additional pouch with healing potions when he just met him? Or when he gave Choi Han the same pouch when he sent him off to find Lock and Rosalyn? Yeah. Cale does that pretty much all the time in the novel.

Conclusion: the reason why Cale is so lovable is because he's already so loving 😊

Neutron Stars Are Even Weirder Than We Thought

Let’s face it, it’s hard for rapidly-spinning, crushed cores of dead stars NOT to be weird. But we’re only beginning to understand how truly bizarre these objects — called neutron stars — are.

Neutron stars are the collapsed remains of massive stars that exploded as supernovae. In each explosion, the outer layers of the star are ejected into their surroundings. At the same time, the core collapses, smooshing more than the mass of our Sun into a sphere about as big as the island of Manhattan.

Our Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) telescope on the International Space Station is working to discover the nature of neutron stars by studying a specific type, called pulsars. Some recent results from NICER are showing that we might have to update how we think about pulsars!

Here are some things we think we know about neutron stars:

Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars ✔︎

Pulsars get their name because they emit beams of light that we see as flashes. Those beams sweep in and out of our view as the star rotates, like the rays from a lighthouse.

Pulsars can spin ludicrously fast. The fastest known pulsar spins 43,000 times every minute. That’s as fast as blender blades! Our Sun is a bit of a slowpoke compared to that — it takes about a month to spin around once.

The beams come from the poles of their strong magnetic fields ✔︎

Pulsars also have magnetic fields, like the Earth and Sun. But like everything else with pulsars, theirs are super-strength. The magnetic field on a typical pulsar is billions to trillions of times stronger than Earth’s!

Near the magnetic poles, the pulsar’s powerful magnetic field rips charged particles from its surface. Some of these particles follow the magnetic field. They then return to strike the pulsar, heating the surface and causing some of the sweeping beams we see.

The beams come from two hot spots… ❌❓✔︎ 🤷🏽

Think of the Earth’s magnetic field — there are two poles, the North Pole and the South Pole. That’s standard for a magnetic field.

On a pulsar, the spinning magnetic field attracts charged particles to the two poles. That means there should be two hot spots, one at the pulsar’s north magnetic pole and the other at its south magnetic pole.

This is where things start to get weird. Two groups mapped a pulsar, known as J0030, using NICER data. One group found that there were two hot spots, as we might have expected. The other group, though, found that their model worked a little better with three (3!) hot spots. Not two.

… that are circular … ❌❓✔︎ 🤷🏽

The particles that cause the hot spots follow the magnetic field lines to the surface. This means they are concentrated at each of the magnetic poles. We expect the magnetic field to appear nearly the same in any direction when viewed from one of the poles. Such symmetry would produce circular hot spots.

In mapping J0030, one group found that one of the hot spots was circular, as expected. But the second spot may be a crescent. The second team found its three spots worked best as ovals.

… and lie directly across from each other on the pulsar ❌❓✔︎ 🤷🏽

Think back to Earth’s magnetic field again. The two poles are on opposite sides of the Earth from each other. When astronomers first modeled pulsar magnetic fields, they made them similar to Earth’s. That is, the magnetic poles would lie at opposite sides of the pulsar.

Since the hot spots happen where the magnetic poles cross the surface of the pulsar, we would expect the beams of light to come from opposite sides of the pulsar.

But, when those groups mapped J0030, they found another surprising characteristic of the spots. All of the hot spots appear in the southern half of the pulsar, whether there were two or three of them.

This also means that the pulsar’s magnetic field is more complicated than our initial models!

J0030 is the first pulsar where we’ve mapped details of the heated regions on its surface. Will others have similarly bizarre-looking hotspots? Will they bring even more surprises? We’ll have to stay tuned to NICER find out!

The Overview Effect

Observing Earth from space can alter an astronauts’ cosmic perspective, a mental shift known as the “Overview Effect.” First coined by space writer Frank White in 1987, the Overview Effect is described as a feeling of awe for our home planet and a sense of responsibility for taking care of it.

Floating Free in Space

Astronaut Bruce McCandless II used his hands to control his movement above the Earth during the first-ever spacewalk that didn’t use restrictive tethers and umbilicals. Fellow crew members aboard the space shuttle Challenger captured this image on Feb. 7, 1984, through windows on the flight deck.

Of his famous spacewalk, McCandless wrote in 2015: “My wife [Bernice] was at mission control, and there was quite a bit of apprehension. I wanted to say something similar to Neil [Armstrong] when he landed on the moon, so I said, ‘It may have been a small step for Neil, but it’s a heck of a big leap for me.’ That loosened the tension a bit.”

Earth Reflections

Astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson looks through a window in the Cupola of the International Space Station (ISS). A blue and white part of Earth and the blackness of space are visible through the windows. The image was a self-portrait using natural light.

In a preflight interview for Expedition 23/24, Dyson said: “hands down, the best part about it is being able to look at that view every day and during the time frame we’ll be up there, hopefully, we’ll have a big bay window and much more opportunity to observe this beautiful planet.”

Taking in the View

As astronaut Nick Hague prepared to conclude his six-month stay aboard the ISS, he shared this photo saying: “Today is my last Monday living on this orbiting laboratory and I’m soaking up my final views. The @Space_Station is truly an engineering marvel. #MondayMotivation." 

He and Expedition 60 and Soyuz commander Alexey Ovchinin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos​ completed a 203-day mission, spanning 3,248 orbits of Earth, and a journey of 80.8 million miles.

Earthrise

On Dec. 24, 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders became the first humans to witness the Earth rising above the Moon’s surface. 

 Anders, photographing the Moon from the right-side window, caught sight of the view, and exclaimed: “Oh my God, look at that picture over there! There’s the Earth comin’ up. Wow, is that pretty!”

The Blue Marble

Besides Earthrise, the Blue Marble is probably the most famous image of Earth that NASA has produced. Taken by the Apollo 17 crew on their way to the Moon in 1972, the Blue Marble and other NASA imagery of Earth has been credited by some with helping to fuel the environmental movement.

Me, reading over my translation of Confession for a White Crow again: Man, Naru really doesn’t sound like a 12 year old kid in this, maybe I should fix it...

*looks at the original Japanese* ...12 year old Naru is speaking really damn formally in this scene. He does not! sound! like a kid! o_o It’s kinda scary actually?! Imagine this kid barely speaking for over a year and then he opens his mouth and out spews this stuff!

Anyway, good job past me, I guess?

Can I request the RFA and the Minor Duo with a MV whose single mom basically adopted them after the first meeting. Like, she’s treating them as her own child :)

Yoosung

The first time that he met your mother, didn’t know what to do with himself. She fawned over him and made sure that he had not only eaten but that the two of you were set for food for the rest of the week. She’s a very caring woman, obviously, but he’s never had someone so wildly and shamelessly dote on him like that with a gentle approach. It reminds him of his Mom but normally she’s scolding him rather than coddling him. So, it sort of makes him red-faced but in a good way.

Your mom dotes on him a lot. He is a little embarrassed by it but it feels nice to have someone check up on you guys sometimes. He likes chatting with her about this and that. Sometimes they share a lot about you or different little recipes that they are work on.

Zen

He was really nervous about meeting your mother for the first time. He wanted to make a good impression and he wanted to ensure that he stole her heart as she was important to you and that made her just as important to him. Well, he didn’t expect her to blow him out of the water by immediately hugging him out of the blue and thanking him for treating you so well. She goes further to say how proud she is of him and how she commends him for his dedication to his skill and craft. 

She’s got a lot of life advice and stern words for parents that treat their children the way that Zen’s parents treated him. By all accounts, your mom basically dotes on him as much as she does with you. Hanging up achievements and different awards he’s gotten around the house, and letting him feel welcome into the family.

Jaehee

She can’t remember what the warmth of her mother’s own affection was like because she was so young when she lost them and moved in with her aunt and uncle. So, she is a little nervous about meeting with your mother but takes it well. Jaehee is taken back when your mother compliments the cafe and the decor, as well as the roast she brewed for this meeting. Your mom makes no error in letting Jaehee know how proud she is of her for finding a dream passion and following it through. 

She loves talking to your mom about her life and her experiences throughout work and such. It seems to be something that sticks and Jaehee admires and respects having the ability to talk to someone that empathizes with what she’s dealt with. She likes being around your mother. 

Jumin

He can’t recall if he’s ever had a good experience with his mom or any older woman in general but still, Jumin Han is always on his best behavior and he wants to make a good impression on your mother. She’s important to you, and thus, important to him. Family is key with Jumin. He wouldn’t even be able to pull out his pleasantries before your mom starts to dote on him with a smile, thanking him for taking care of you all this time. She makes no point of hiding how crafty he must be to have his position. 

Jumin admires your mother and her commitment to be a single parent. It is not easy and talking with her makes him want to look into more programs that can help families that are in need like that. Jumin, always thinking of others, your mom notes with a sigh. 

Seven

Seven does not have a lot of good feelings about parents. You can’t blame him for that but he wants to love your family. He wants to know your mom because you talk about her often and how much she means to you. He is really scared of making a bad impression, so much so that he will try to not be himself around her at first and just pretend to be straightforward. Your mom calls him out on that because he’s so stiff and she already knows that he’s a generous, kind, and funny man. She just takes her hands in his and smiles, thanking him for being so kind to you. 

Seven learns what it feels like to have a real mother that cares about him and sometimes he can’t stop himself from crying because she’s just so kind to him. She’s a lot like you, and it hits him harder knowing that. He feels right at home with your mom. She is kind, gentle, and makes sure that he’s eating right. It just feels nice. 

V

Sort of like Jumin. He knows how to behave himself and he knows that he can talk to anyone but this isn’t just anyone. His nerves wrack up into the hundreds when he realizes that he’ll be meeting that person that means a lot to you. He is good about smiling and being curt but he’s a little quiet because he does not know what to say. He wants to thank her for bringing you into the world but that is so forward! Your mom just melts and dotes on him anyway, smiling and letting him know how much she’s heard about him and how proud she is of him for working on himself. 

Being with a mom like this... reminds V of how much he misses his mom, he does spend some time talking to your mom about that grief and loss because it has been such a while since he felt like he could talk about it. He enjoys having her perspective on the world and on art. She’s so kind to him.

Saeran

Somehow more frightened than any of the aforementioned people on this list and then some. Women is a touchy subject. Well, no, maternal figures are not something that he has a good history with. He knows that your mother is not like them but he’s fearful that your mom will realize that you’re dating a broken man and disapprove of the relationship. His heart is beating out of his chest even as he remembers his manners. Your mom is empathetic and understanding of his woes. She is sincere and gentle with him, letting him know up front that she very much does approve of the relationship, and she’s glad that you have such a sweet man around. 

God, he might break down and cry the minute your mother leaves because he has never had such a positive experience with a parent. She is understanding and so much like you, no wonder you were so kind. You got it honest. Saeran spends a lot of time helping her bake and cook and just talking about shared interests. He feels... at home.
