On the Naru, Mai and Gene Dynamic

Feeling up to it today, so here’s a little ramble:

Sometimes I think it’s a shame Ghost Hunt ended when it did, because I felt like the relationship Mai and Naru had in Akumu no Sumu Ie was so beautiful– they were for the first time on truly even ground with each other. As a writer, I understand when you know, for a fact as a creator that a story is over but their dynamic in that book was my favorite thing about it. They truly knew each other and accepted each other despite still getting frustrated with each other– but that’s true friendship. You care about someone and know someone so well you can kinda pick at their flaws objectively, and now that Mai knows where Naru is coming from and vice versa, they both do that with rather hilarious results.

There was finally a true equilibrium in their relationship, and that’s because the flucrum of it wasn’t “dream Naru” aka Gene. Gene’s still a pressence in both of their lives but before this, he seemed to overshadow and throw things out of balance for both of them– Naru because he was consumed with finding him and Mai because she couldn’t reconcile “Dream Naru” with the one she knew in the waking world.

There’s a part of me that wants more Ghost Hunt just to see what Mai and Naru are like when they well and truly “get” each other and Gene is, however bittersweetly, where he belongs. Gene is gone, and I think part of his own development as a character was figuring out how to step back and let Naru figure out what Mai had the potential to be to him on her own. Gene reached out to Mai because Naru needed someone, someone who could be there, physically with him to challenge him to be the person he always knew Naru was, to use a phrase I’d coined before– be Naru’s belligerent better angels. But Mai doesn’t need Gene anymore to do that, she knows why Gene broughtthem together. And it’s enough, because it has to be, because Gene’s dead and his ability to infulence the world on Naru’s behalf will never be what it was when he was living.

Naru receives a letter with a peculiar request, but he could not have predicted that it would show his impending death. Mai and the others are in for a long haul to save Naru from a possible tragedy. [Mostly T, later M for dark themes.]

by Agwen/ @flychansan  Ongoing 81,457 words

The plot, the characters, the tone: everything in this story will keep your attention!

A letter arrives, and impacts the course of the story. Little changes cascading into bigger ones weave the telling of this intriguing plot, mixing canon facts and extrapolations cleverly.

The chapters offer a good balance between mystery, paranormal, humour, family and even romance (though the latter is rather subtly hinted and the pairings are undisclosed so far). The author has a perfect mastery of the characters, and is able to provide the most organic and believable interactions, for instance between Naru and his twin brother, which were the focus of this first arc.

Follow my advice and give it a try. You’ll thank me later.

A Long Time Coming by GlitterCyborgPrincess, Rated T Summary:  It took a long time, but Mai finally realized why that one question was so absolutely devastating. She doesn’t like easy and agreeing with him made it *suspiciously* easy. Mai preferred a challenge.

Feeding on Fear by CoffeeQuills, Rated E Summary: Naru has a new case and it’s already giving him vague feelings of foreboding, prompting him to only take volunteers to Kiryu, Gunma, where the bodies of an entire family have been found. Then Monk goes missing, plunging the SPR team into chaos. With Mai’s growing nightmares and Masako’s mysterious illness, the stakes have been raised. In the end, will determination be enough to save them all? Or will someone slip through the cracks?

Trusting Intuition by rowankitsune18, Rated T Summary: Seven years have passed since Naru left for England and everyone in their own way has moved own. However, things begin to change when Masako invites Mai to a paranormal conference in London. A chance meeting; uncertain future. And who is the strange boy alone at the party? (NaruxMai)

I Am Still Here by Koizumi_Scarlet, Rated M Summary: As an investigator for SPR, Mai is used to seeing malicious spirits. However, their newest case may be the most dangerous one yet, especially as the haunting becomes more complex and confounding than ever. With Naru back for the first time in almost two years, Mai must navigate her feelings as well as the haunted house. With things not as they seem, can Mai survive to see the end?

Don’t Go Outside by Koizumi_Scarlet, Rated M  Summary: Mai and Naru was ready to enjoy a leisure visit to Naru’s parents in England over Christmas. Yet an unexpected visitor in the night threw a spanner in the works and they are needed on a case that’s already proven itself dangerous. Travelling to London’s most famous insane Asylum, they must separate the truth from the lies to solve the mystery and perhaps save a soul in the process. Sequel to IASH.

I’ll probably expand this list later on to include more.

Ghost Hunt Volume 9

Ghost Hunt Volume 9

Ghost Hunt Volume 9

 by Lysiithea

This is three months after the Agawa investigation. The SPR has been called to investigate strange happenings at a boarding school/orphanage. The case was brought to them first by a mysterious letter claiming to be written from a dead person, then by a councillor representative of the orphanage school. Upon investigating, things are not what they seemed to be.

This fic does a really fine job capturing the feel of Ghost Hunt, picking up right after the Akumu series. It’s written similarly to the Ghost Hunt novels, with Mai as the narrator, so that it feels a lot like the real deal.

The author weaves the mystery well with plenty of unsettling and creepy moments involved. Plus they also sneak in some superb (and believable) MaiRu gems in there! The author had gone on hiatus for a while due to their manuscript notes getting lost, but it seems like they finally managed to get everything set up again, so I’m looking forward to more updates in the future! If you’re looking for that good old GH scare, I fully recommend this giving this story a try! And I urge you to leave the author some lovely comments to welcome them back into the fandom!

I have heard that there are spin off manga series about gh characters. do you know where you can read the one for monk?

Hello, There are short stories and there is the occasional sketch comic released by the Mangaka but we have not heard of any spin off manga series for Ghost Hunt. (Unless you are counting doujinshi)We keep a list of the Ghost Hunt books, manga, and short stories that have been translated on our website.

Sorry there isn’t more, I wish there was more Ghost Hunt out there spin off or otherwise.
