Some might keep the keys I gave
Some might feel their essence
Some might remember what I said
Some might feel them right away
Some might stay lost on their way
Some might find the door one day

so i’ve recently rewatched atla again, and i remembered something from my first watch. A main idea of atla is to take inspiration from others. this is shown most prominently in book 2 ep 9: bitter work. Iroh is telling zuko that to be a powerful bender, you must take inspiration from all 4 nations. this idea is also shown in silas character arc, where he learns the non bending fighting styles of other nations, for example piendao most prominently. when Sokka starts the show, his fighting is laughable, but with the help of Suki, he learns to use his opponents weight against them, a water tribe move. sokka is already stubborn like an earth bender from the first episode, so that’s earth and water. In book 3 episode 4: sokkas master, he learns to fight like a fire nation soldier. all of this accumulated into the last episodes, where you can see him grown as a person, and a warrior. this idea that you should take inspiration from other styles is what i believe makes the avatar so strong too. not only can they bend all 4 elements, they also bend the elements like the other elements, you can see them using, for example, water bending in a very earth bending style. All of this it too say that atla has many meanings, and this idea is one that i haven’t seen a lot around, so i just thought i’d share. sorry for rambling about this, i just felt it needed to be said
