"Il primo aprile del 1998 David Bowie era tra gli organizzatori, nello studio dell’artista Jeff Koons, di un elaborato pesce d’aprile. Lo scrittore britannico William Boyd aveva appena pubblicato, proprio grazie a Bowie, un libretto intitolato *Nat Tate: an american artist 1928-1960*, la biografia, con tanto di foto e illustrazioni, di un dimenticato esponente dell’espressionismo astratto newyorchese che, dopo una vita di frustrazioni e di insuccessi, nel 1960 si uccise gettandosi nel fiume dal traghetto di Staten Island. Quella sera nello studio di Koons, alla presentazione di quel libro-rivelazione (con tanto di nota di copertina di Gore Vidal) c’era tutto il bel mondo dell’arte contemporanea di New York e alle pareti c’erano i pochi lavori rimasti di Tate, che aveva bruciato tutte le sue opere prima di uccidersi.
Peccato che Nat Tate non era mai esistito e che quei lavori li aveva fatti lo stesso Boyd con uno stile che mescolava la pennellata decisa di Robert Motherwell ai graziosi ghirigori del Warhol illustratore pubblicitario. La finta biografia dell’inesistente Nat Tate è un libro appassionante e pieno di dettagli sulla sua vita privata e artistica: dal suo alcolismo ai rapporti con critici e galleristi dell’epoca, fino a un fatidico incontro a Parigi con Georges Braque, il padre del cubismo. Quella sera in molti vollero credere che ci fosse davvero un grande artista da riscoprire e alcuni dissero che certo sì, avevano sentito parlare dei disegni di Nat Tate. Mentre Bowie, Vidal, Boyd e i suoi complici se la ridevano."
Ecco uno dei motivi per cui mi piace David Bowie, il suo essere artista a 360° precorrendo i tempi e perculando i critici musicali.

Simon Wilder: Crude? No, sir. Our "founding parents" were pompous, white, middle-aged farmers, but they were also great men. Because they knew one thing that all great men should know: that they didn't know everything. Sure, they'd make mistakes, but they made sure to leave a way to correct them. The president is not an "elected king," no matter how many bombs he can drop. Because the "crude" Constitution doesn't trust him. He's just a bum, okay Mr. Pitkannan? He's just a bum.
This is one of the best movies from the 90's and deserves way more recognition. Despite what these pictures and the publicity for this movie will have you believe, Brendan Fraser isn't the main character. (I'm not complaining about the eye candy though) Not really. The real star is Joe Pesci as Simon. He has the best lines and the frankly better character arc.
One of the things that kills me about this movie is that in the exchange above, the other person in the conversation is played by Gore Vidal. Yes, THAT Gore Vidal. Essayist, Public intellectual, Bisexual, Said gross things about the Roman Polanski case, had fueds with Truman Capote, William F. Buckley Jr., AND Norman Mailer, Had alleged love affairs with Anais Nin AND Fred Astaire, Gore Vidal.
