we were never meant to be permanent

not in

mortality

so the story behind this, today, is that I got emotionally attached to a class I only have for three months ish. that's college for you.

and we came to the end of our time together today sitting around a table, slamming markers and gatorade down in a game in Portuguese I felt so content even knowing it was coming to an end even with the primal fear of someone aboard a speed train about to reach the end of the track one day, it will be permanent but not in this life I will see you all again on the other side Even if I never see you again in this mortal life

It comes down to the principle of Gatorade. That's what I call it because I remember a time when I was a kid that Gatorades were a prize. You could only obtain them by playing soccer because the other kids' soccer moms would bring Gatorade and CapriSun and all those glorious things your parents didn't get for you. Basically, you can't have one Gatorade forever. Makes sense, right?

But what if you could make a Gatorade last forever? What if you were in that one glorious moment forever? The sun shining off the thick clouds in the late golden hour, illuminating the greens and blues in the mountains around, the wind your best friend so exhilarating, the satisfaction of completing a soccer game you loved not for anything in particular other than the fact that you were outside and alive and proving yourself alive and you have a Gatorade.

Make that moment last forever. Now, what do you lose?

Years from now, you'll be at a movie night with friends. You will be scrunched between two people you love on a couch, or maybe curled cozily into a corner, or marinating in a beanbag with a super soft blanket. The movie is the greatest movie you've ever seen and it's only augmented by being cozy with true friends. One day you will finally achieve that skill you spend years trying to perfect. One day you might even learn to cook. You'll meet someone new a thousand times, then a million times. You'll even get to meet the same person again and again if you try. There will be so many people that come and go in your life. So many hobbies and loves and passions and YouTube recommendations.

You will change as a person and maybe you will be scared to. Maybe you'll long for the comfort and safety and glory of the Gatorade in the fresh air.

But if you remain there forever, you will never meet your best friend. You will never have that cozy movie night and never accomplish that tricky thing. You will never encounter so many things to love. TV show or drawing styles or color palettes or characters or songs. You're going to make an awesome PowerPoint one day. Would you give that up for the Gatorade you've already had?

As mortal beings we are confined to a timeline. Time-bound. Afterwards, though, we'll get to be whole, and let me tell you time isn't a problem for God. We'll get to remember each moment of joy we got to have down here on earth. We'll get to live each of them all at once if we want, and be with everyone we love all at once, forever, and I know I'm a mortal and probably butchering this description of what comes next because heck it I've not been there yet but that's sort of what it'll be like.

It's possible for everything we want to be permanent to be permanent in eternity. That's the point of eternity. That is not the point of mortality. The point of mortality is to do many things, experience many things, keep moving.

(As for the loved ones who stay in your life? They change, too, and that's beautiful.)

We were never meant to be permanent in mortality. The permanence comes later.

I had no idea of thirst until I met you.

The true longing of just your taste.

I grasp a fraction of your scent, I feel my skin flushing, crimson spreading.

Heart beating so hard, I feel It will inevitably break through my ribs.

How can my mind have so many thoughts, flying so dangerously fast, yet with razor precision my focus is on you.

I ache.

I lay erect, lost in worlds sleep and wake.

No matter my status, I see you, want you.

Oh do I want.....

Best Moments From A Year In Space

Best Moments from a Year in Space

Creepily enough I have not meet Astronaut Scott Kelly in person, yet through my experience as a NASA Johnson Space intern I have followed his whole journey. While sitting in Mission Control I would see Kelly float through the International Space Station (ISS) to his next experiment, struggle with space food and occasionally pull a space prank. After a record breaking year in space Kelly will return to Earth March 1st and you can watch here 9:15pmCT. He has had many great moments and below are my personal favorites...

Extra Terrestrial Lettuce

image

Scott Kelly taking a selfie with space lettuce - NASA

Astronauts consumed a space grown harvest for the first time! Kelly, Β Kjell Lindgren, and Kimiya Yui tried crisp red romaine lettuce, first plain and then with vinaigrette. NASA was testing the effectiveness of a plant growth facility, Veggie, using rooting "pillows," which contain the seeds. Providing fresh food for astronauts, NASA plans to grow food on spacecrafts and on other planets in the future.

Space flowers, zinnia, were also grown in the Veggie during Kelly's mission blooming with oddly curled petals. NASA ground support treated Kelly like an autonomous gardener with only a one page flower care guide. These zinnia were not the first flowers to bloom on the ISS, in 2012 Astronaut Don Pettit grew a sunflower, broccoli and zucchini plant for a personal experiment. The zucchini bloomed a yellow flower but did not produce a full zucchini with the time allotted. Pettit wrote a "Diary of a Space Zucchini" from the perspective of the orbiting zucchini plant. The first flower to bloom in space was a Arabidopsis flown on board the then Soviet Union’s Salyut-7 space station in 1982.

While there is a lot of science to get excited about in space sometimes its acceptable to take a moment to appreciate a good space selfie. Kelly was pretty selfie happy religiously posting to Twitter and sneaking in a few selfies during down time on space walks. In addition to selfies Kelly has taken thousands of stunning photos of Earth from his extraterrestrial perspective. During his over 5,000 orbits around the Earth Scott Kelly has taken thousands upon thousands of photos documenting Earth's beauty and fluid environment. He has captured Northern Lights, illuminated cities, painted deserts, reaching rivers and looming storms. All of these photos that make Earth look like an unknown planet can be found on his Instagram and Twitter. For the record Buzz Aldrin the took first space selfie in 1966.

Scott Kelly observing a tablet fizzing in water - NASA

Unfortunately this is not a slime ball alien. Scott Kelly dissolved a fizzing tablet and food coloring in a floating ball of water. This bubbling phenomenon was captured using a camera ultra high-definition cameras. NASA explains that higher resolution images and higher frame rate videos can reveal more information when used on science investigations. The floating sphere's form was disturbed by its internal popping and bubbling. Personally I thought this experiment was the most hypnotic.

Watch this odd ball I deem to be better than a lava lamp.

Scott Kelly admiring fresh fruit delivered halfway into his yearlong mission - NASA

Woah, livin' on a prayer!

Seriously though, a year in space takes some serious endurance. A sane completion of half a year in space is well worth a celebration. On board the crew received a delivery of fresh fruit in late August on the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV4) Kounotori, a Japanese cargo ship. On ground, Mission Control celebrated with cupcakes and Skyped with Kelly. Kounotori was one of nine cargo ships Kelly welcomed to ISS. The successful docking of a cargo ship is critical as they carry needed food, experiments, tools and replacement equipment.

Liquid in Earth Gravity (right) and low gravity (Left) - NASA

Poor Scott Kelly had to sip coffee for hours to observe patterns of liquid tension in the new Space Cup. It was amusing to hear Kelly claim he took the longest sip of coffee in history. Although bags of coffee are already used on ISS, drinking a cup off coffee is more natural like back on Earth boosting astronaut moral. These Space Cups are engineered to accommodate to liquid's behavior in low gravity. Liquid is very "sticky" in space desiring to adhere to surfaces and pooling. This phenomenon became a hazard when coolant leaked in astronaut Luca Parmitano's space suit during an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity/ Space Walk) in 2013. By studying the tendencies of liquid in space we can better understand chemical and biological processes in space.

Myself logging during Kelly's second EVA - NASA

During Scott Kelly's second ever space walk I got to follow along with their procedure and log when they successfully completed tasks. Honestly the procedure book is full of engineering jargon that the astronauts may not complete int he desired order, I never had a dull moment trying to keep up! I can't imagine the focus space walkers must have following the procedure, fixing parts on the ISS, staying safe all for many hours without a bathroom and a granola bar. Kelly and Kjell Lindgren spent 7 hours and 48 minutes working outside the International Space Station. They fixed ISS' ammonia cooling system. Scott Kelly performed three EVAs during his year in space.

Fragile Exploration

The whole point of Scott Kelly's year long mission is to observe the long term effects of space on a human's body and mind. Humans are the most fragile thing we send up to space. Unfortunately we are not a robot society because by now we would have personally explored each planet in our solar system. To explore, humans have to leave Earth, exist in low gravity and land on other planets SAFELY. Scott Kelly's year in space is a huge step in the right direction to identify our boundaries and expand them. With Scott Kelly on board and his twin brother Mark Kelly as the control on Earth we have a unique look at the effects of zero gravity. Once Scott Kelly lands the science has just begun! Scientists will evaluate the effects on the body in low gravity, observe how Scott Kelly adjusts to Earth's gravity, and observe other changes Scott Kelly has experienced. It is so neat we get to watch this scientific exploration unfold!

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

Time Inc. produced a net video series called "A Year In Space" about Scott Kelly's mission.

PBS and Time Inc. will team up to produce a two part series about the mission too.

Launch your career in aerospace.

Out of the Woods

β€” pairing: wolf hybrid namjoon x human f!reader β€” genre: fluff, angst, slight smut β€” word count: 10.2K β€” warnings: light injury, nothing too bad!Β  β€” summary:Β Promising Jihyo that you were going to stay away from your writing for one weekend had been easy in theory, but much harder to actually do once you reached the little cabin the woods. To make matters worse, the only thing that rivals your inability to keep promises is your terrible luck – and after a particularly bad choice leads you to get lost in the mountains, you suppose that it’s only karma that you end up face to face with a wolf that looks ready to rip your throat out.

Part I / II / III

image

β€œWhy are we here again?” You huff, waving your hands uselessly in the air to fend off the insistent mosquitos that seem to have chosen you as their next meal. β€œAnd don’t say it’s because I need–”

β€œIt’s because you need some sunlight! Fresh air! You haven’t been out outside of your apartment in months,” Jihyo shoots you a look over her shoulder, one that’s equally as much worried, as it is exasperated. You bite down on your tongue to fend off any building remarks. Because well .. she’s right. The only time you’ve stepped outside your apartment recently was to either get groceries, or to run to the convenience store nearby when the craving for a late night snack became too much. Β

β€œIt’s because I’m busy–” Β

β€œBusy my ass!” Jihyo interrupts with a humorless snort, β€œYou finished writing your first draft weeks ago, Y/n. I understand that you get in one of your β€˜moods’ when you write, but you can’t shut yourself away from the rest of the world whenever that happens. You’ll let your own life pass you by.”

You narrow your eyes at Jihyo’s use of air quotes, because frankly, it’s not just a mood, it’s inspiration. You know you have to take full advantage of it when you have it – that you have to devote your sole focus to the words spilling from your fingertips unless you want to lose them. You did that once. You had just finished writing a chapter when some old friends from university had called you out for some drinks. You easily accepted, happy to celebrate your progress and unwind a little bit. The problem however, reared its ugly head the day after. Because when you sat down in front of your computer, the empty document stared back at you like a stranger.

You couldn’t write. No sentences seemed to flow the way you wanted them too, and everything was just so dull. It took weeks – a whole month in fact – before it reappeared, and by that time you were left scrambling to complete the last half of your book in just one week. You felt like you aged ten years during those seven days, and you wowed to never let it happen again. So, your solution had been to eliminate any distractions. You stopped meeting up with friends, ignoring any calls or texts that weren’t from your publisher. You didn’t set foot outside your apartment unless your fridge was empty or a craving became too big, and even then, you barely acknowledged the outside world, too scared that even a friendly hello would somehow yank you out of your mindset.

So you hold you tongue, biting down at the soft flesh of your lower lip as Jihyo trudges ahead in front of you. No matter how much you want to retort back that she’s wrong – you can’t. Because she knows you better than you like to admit. You suppose being friends since you were six probably has something to do with that. Jihyo is the most understanding person you know when it comes to your moods, but you know that even she has her limits. That even she gets hurt when it takes you days to respond to her texts. And that’s the only reason you’re even out here, stumbling and tripping over rocks and loose roots in the middle of nowhere. Because you feel guilty, and because Jihyo deserves a better friend than what you’ve been to her for a while.

β€œFine,” You grumble. β€œHow long will it take until we’re there? We’ve been walking for hours.”

β€œWe’ve been walking for thirty minutes Y/n,” Jihyo shakes her head. β€œBut I think we’re pretty close now!” Β

I Visited Idiot Street And Everyone Knew Your Name!

a/n: the well awaited end to this fic is here! enjoy :)

synopsis: the three times you friendzoned Alhaitham, and the one he made damn sure youΒ didn't.

tags: alhaitham/reader ; school setting ; valentine's day special ; reader likes sewing, miscommunication

I Visited Idiot Street And Everyone Knew Your Name!

It’s Valentine’s Day, and the most unusual thing to ever happen to youβ€”happens.

A pristine white note falls out of your locker, and you never thought you would see the day. You’d assume, being a workaholic and being relegated to tasks (due to people pleasing tendencies you can’t seem to shake off), that you’d finish off the school year without falling victim to Valentine’s day sickeningly sweet confessions.

Please meet me in the homeroom lab after classes. – H

If it was any other day, you’d assume one of the teachers wrote you this note, and that you were going to be subjected to a ruthless talking-to. Yet, coincidentally, it’s that time of the year, and everyoneΒ elseΒ is getting notes like these too.

For the fun of it, you still decide to go where the note directs you. Mostly because you’re deathly curious to who thisΒ HΒ person is. No expectations, of course.

When the dismissal bell rings, you quickly scramble out of your classroom, pointedly ignoring your friend’s confused call of your name. Leaving your bag and belongings behind. You’ll get back to her laterβ€”but now, the curiosity is killing you.

You navigate the sloppily decorated hallways; passing by lovestruck couples and through streamer paper decor of pinks, whites and reds. Cupid balloons and the overwhelmingly sweet scent of roses suffocate your senses.

The homeroom lab is at the end of the hallway, where all the decorations dwindle or are practically deflating with the lack of attention to detailβ€”it irks you slightly, if this is a confession like you suspect, the surroundings could afford to be somewhat romantic. Not this cheap, unenthusiastic mess, it certainly wouldn’t be helping your case.

Your eyes lock onto one heart helium balloon, it drifts aimlessly across the floorβ€”not enough to float up but not completely deflated. You glare at it, like trying to pop it with only your gaze, then to the door.

Steeling yourself, you take a breath then slide it open.

TheΒ lastΒ person you ever expect to be there, is there too.

β€œAlhaitham?” you ask, breathless and puzzled.

Was it him that sent you the note?

You shake that thought away, although you got your hopes up the tiniest bit, it’s probably unrelated to anything hearts themed. You’re pretty sure he’s been actively avoiding people confessing to him today. Maybe that’s why he hid in here, you muse.

β€œIt’s me, yes,” he nods. β€œI assume you read my note?”

You laugh, shutting the homeroom lab door unceremoniously behind you. β€œThat was you? Dude, you could’ve just told me, what’s with all the secrecy?”

β€œThere’s something that I need to discuss with you.”

β€œDiscuss with me,” you repeat, walking over to lean against the working table. Which, thank heavens, is pristinely clean. β€œAm I in trouble?”

β€œNo,” he responds and you hum in faux relief. β€œThough there is something else.”

Alhaitham produces a sleek black chocolate box from seemingly nowhereβ€”or maybe you hadn't seen him hold itβ€”and holds it out to you.

β€œSweet!” you grin, snatching the chocolates and examining the box. β€œThis is some really good chocolate, Haitham. Who gave you this one?”

β€œNo one,” he says. Alhaitham picks at his black painted nailsβ€”ones that you yourself painted a few weeks ago in his apartment. The polish is immaculate, almost looking freshly painted if it weren’t for the new nail growth starting underneath. β€œThose are completely from me, for you.”

You double take, taking a long lingering look at the gift. On the smack middle of the box, is the same type of note from earlier in your locker, but this has your name written in elegant cursive:

Happy Valentines.Β It writes, and you feel strange tingles travel down your spine. Not entirely unpleasant.

β€œYou shouldn’t have,” your eyes widen. β€œI didn’t get anything for you, I never thought we were getting each otherΒ friendship chocolates!”

There’s a lengthy pause before you hear any reaction from him. Alhaitham makes a strangled noise from deep in his throat. β€œFriendship chocolates?”

He stresses your name, while massaging his temples. β€œ...I wrote you that note, I waited in here for you and have the audacity to think what I gave you areΒ friendshipΒ chocolates. Does that sound logical to you?”

β€œOf course,” you snort, putting down the chocolates to rest on the low table. β€œThe only other reason I can think of would be because you like me, which I doubt—”

His lips flatten in unamusement. β€œSo what if I do?”

β€œWait, what?”

He inhales deeply, and you swear you see the slightest hints of pink on his ears that peek from underneath silver hair. The silence now is absolutely deafening, and the anticipation even more so. To you, the knowledge of his bashfulness makes the situation feel all the more real.

Alhaitham utters your name softly, like he’s pleading you to understand so that he needn’t repeat himself. Which he never does, the damnΒ pridefulΒ man.

You’d make a teasing remark if you weren’t so frozen with nerves, the sound of your name from his lips is causing ticklish shivers up your spine. It sounds so intimate when he says it.

Like a secret, even. Although Alhaitham might be the most self-preserving and unambitious person you know, when it comes to the things that matter to himβ€”he takes initiative right away.

β€œSo you like me–” you breathe, the button up collar of your shirt feels all too tight all of a sudden, you tangle your fingers together and squeeze tightly. β€œLike, likeΒ likeΒ me?”

β€œI’ve been trying to tell you,” he sighs, low and long-suffering. β€œFor three whole years.”

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Your eyes widen and you feel a low simmering heat spreading all over, even till your fingertips. You recall all the other times, past Valentine's days and recounting his strange behavior. All the dots start to connect together and you wonder how you never noticed. β€œWhat the hell.”

β€œSo that one time last year when you were offering me your button—” you gasp. You remember, it’s a stupid highschool tradition, a boy would offer the second button of his uniform to a girl if he liked her. It’s the closest to the heart, but to you, it’s a thoughtless way to ruin perfectly good clothing. β€œHaitham, did you ask Kaveh for advice or something?”

β€œMatters like these are irrelevant to argue with him about,” he scoffs. Alhaitham folds his arms across his chest. β€œHe ran off and came to the conclusion himself. Ever since then, he’s been bothering me with trying all types of confession tradition.”

Laughter starts to bubble out of you, disbelieving and flustered to the maximum level. β€œDude, I basicallyΒ friendzonedΒ you and had no idea! You should’ve told me.”

His shoulders stiffen and he gives you such a disarminglyΒ attractiveΒ look. And if your eyes dare deceive you, he looks the teensiest bitΒ hopefulΒ too. Right now, you feel like your heart is beating right out of your goddamn chest. The sound is so loud, the quickening thumping sound of your chest that you swear he might hear it too.

β€œ...I see that now,” he says, his expression is exasperatedβ€”but so unbelievably soft. You feel yourself melting like butter under his gaze. β€œThough I am disappointed in your lacking ability to identify context clues.”

β€œOh whatever,” you bump your shoulder against his, though you don’t move back away. The warmth of him is all consuming and comforting as hell, you could burrow yourself in him and never resurface, you think. He accepts your closeness with a strong arm wrapping behind you to hold you by the hand. Your stomach does somersaults in your stomach. β€œIt’s all your fault. You’re an idiot for not telling it to me straight.”

β€œDoes that mean you reciprocate?” he murmurs, leaning closer to whisper in your ear.

You pull back enough to take the box of chocolates, opening it and popping one in your mouth. β€œThis chocolate is pretty good. Guess I’ll have to let you stick around for more.”

I like you too.

He nuzzles into you, leaving a chaste kiss on the crown of your head. β€œI guess you do, don’t you?”

The Other Side of Nostalgia

Emoji Summary: πŸ’”β˜ οΈπŸ”ͺ🏫🍸🎭🚨

The Other Side Of Nostalgia

Better Summary: At a class reunion set in a hauntingly nostalgic Victorian schoolhouse, old memories and long-lost connections collide with a nightmarish turn of events. As familiar faces from the Class of 2015 reconnect, including an old flame and a loyal friend, the festive atmosphere quickly gives way to terror. When a staged party decoration turns into a gruesome reality, the night devolves into chaos and panic. The narrator, grappling with feelings of loneliness and regret, reflects on the contrast between the life they chose and the hauntingly vivid memories of what could have been. "The Other Side of Nostalgia" delves into the darker sides of nostalgia and the unsettling realization that even joyful reunions can become a harrowing journey into the past.

The Other Side of Nostalgia has been triple edited and published to my Wattpad! Please comment and let me know what you like and what you hate about it! This is my first short horror story and I have dozens more ideas ready for my next victim, I mean, reader. πŸ˜…
