Chapter 5: Bubastis
~Shuri~
I felt for the first time an urge to not be right yet we are. I was right Bubastis was all old tombs and desert.
“Griot, can you scan any other life or town around here?” I asked walking around.
“Scanning Princess” he replied.
I leaned against a pillar tired and frustrated we’d been here only five minutes and I was ready to go home. The emotional and mental weight on my shoulders added more additional pressure to my stress.
I’ve been scammed and bamboozled.
Before I could start going on a rant about how Bast would have to catch these hands and how I wanted to throw her in a vat of hair remover so she could look like that cat from cats and dogs the revenge of kitty galore.
“Princess in one of the tombs there is an sign of an oasis.” Griot cut into my sacrilege plans and revenge.
“Which direction?”
“Behind this temple”. I turned and entered the temple with statues of intact and eroded depictions of cats.
I delved deeper and found a crypt with a gold mask of a cat in the middle of the room a doorway in the middle of it open. I felt the humidity and a bright light ebbing from its cracks.
I carefully stepped through the room wary of traps and such. I slipped through the crack in the door and shielded my eyes from the light.
-------------
The door quickly slammed closed behind me and before I could panic I came to the sight of a giant oasis. The water is clear and the air is similar to Wakanda’s. the trees and crops outlining the banks of the river.
I readied my black panther suit ready for whatever came next to tear away this serene scene and stepped more into the mysterious oasis. I turned to my left and couldn’t believe my eyes. There lay a big city with beautiful architecture and signs of vibranium in the buildings.
I stumbled as two kids ran past me giggling.
It motivated me to move to enter the vibrant area. A bustling marketplace hummed in the familiar tune of bargaining, calls of sales, and orders being given.
I looked around in awe at the place and its liveliness. There was a thrum that brushed over me in care. No doubt Bastet was here, her followers had her depicted in their architecture and clothing a sign of her ingrained in every person.
But who out of all of them is really her? She said she could be a man, woman, or child and appear at any age but what makes her distinct?
“Griot any supernaturalness in anyone here other than me?” I asked reaching the square of the city and looking around.
“There is a faint trace calculating” I let out a frustrated moan and plopped down on a step.
‘So much for coming to me’ I rolled my eyes.
I took out my flask of water gulped down the cool drink and took a moment to observe and cool down. I smiled at the kind people who had started to approach and started to strike up a conversation. Some tried to get me to buy something or just gave me items and food for free.
A few hours later
The children took a shine to me as well urging me to play some soccer games and other games with them. The time slipped with each interaction until I was caught up in a conversation with a musician.
“How do you like Bubastis so far?” she said handing me some juices to try as we continued marveling and talking about the beautiful city and people.
“It’s beautiful I haven't seen a place like this anywhere else other than home(and talokan)” I replied sipping and humming at the sweet taste of the coconut and melon juice.
“Oh, and where is home?” she asked.
“It is like here the air is crisp, the water is clear and clean and the people are lively, and even when we fight we still forgive and grow and love each other.” I reminisced.
“Sounds wonderful I wish I could see it someday” She replied and before I could say something in response the children swarmed her and I.
“ ‘basti, ‘basti please do music for us please” they begged and we both laughed fondly at their eager pleas.
“Alright, alright my cubs I’ll make music for you what would you like me to play.” She asked turning to her guitar case and bringing out a guitar. And other musicians surrounded us ready to play.
“Sing a song from Nigeria”
“No no, sing a song from south africa”
“No, do an international piece we loved your singing from other continents they sound so beautiful coming from you ‘basti”
“Okay, little cubs how about I perform a song from India hmm” They vibrated with energy and nodded excitedly.
She said something in Coptic and the musicians started playing a serene tone. The singer started vocalizing, moving around and serenading the crowd.
I quickly glanced at Griot's report and saw she was nearby. I scanned the crowd but saw no one resembling the goddess from my dreams.
Drums rang in the air catching my attention again as dancers started to appear out of nowhere in time with the beat and ‘Basti stood in the middle. What.
The video of dheera dheera from magdheera
She sang and danced with the mystery people and looked like a moving work of art her movement was flexible and graceful almost like a cat.
No way ‘basti, Ubasti, Bast.
She started changing forms she grew a bit taller and her skin formed a galaxy pattern. She formed ears and a tail and her irises slit to that of a cat the man who performed the duet with her was mystified and put even more effort into their performance.
“First time seeing Ubasti perform” a voice cut in and I turned to see an older woman sitting beside me.
“Yes is she…”
“The goddess yes”
“How did I not notice,” I asked turning part of my attention back to the goddess.
“She only exposes herself when she performs for the kids, they are the only ones who don’t fear her form and make it more comfortable seeking her.” exactly as she instructed someone will lead me to her, and then she would find me.
“It’s been a tradition since her birth that she performs for the people she sings, dances, and plays with us. Our days never result in anything but joy.”
The performance ended in cheers and joy like the woman said she hugged and playfully chased the children. She finally turned to me and all the people appeared behind her in a bow.
“Welcome princess Shuri to Bubastis sorry for the long wait my panther,” The woman said her voice a bit deep, mature, and smoothed like caramel and honey. Her eyes were a galaxy purple sparkling in excitement.
“You are really real, this is really real.” I breathed out taking everything once again.
“Yes, Princess Shuri and thank you for being patient with me and my people. They haven’t seen anyone in the outside world before and begged me to let them entertain you a bit before I sought you out.” She apologized with a sheepish smile.
“I-It’s okay I enjoyed their company” I stuttered standing up with an incline of my head in thanks.
“Ready?” She asked placing her palms out in time for our ritual. I nodded and placed my own a bit hesitantly in hers. The tattoo on my arm tingled and glowed a similar one appeared on her arm.
My mind was engulfed in magic as an image of an infinity sign and ankh formed and sealed together an even deeper mind link forming between us.
“I am you and you are me,” She said in finality. It was finally official.
The oasis immediately started to change time went faster and the door appeared opening revealing the tomb and the sleeping form of Bast’s body holding an ankh and sistrum.
The bast with me let go of my hands and went over to her people and did the signature wakandan greeting.
From what I now observe and found to be how the Egyptians buried their dead. They returned it with a few tears. A sign that her leave from this world a big affect on them.
“I love you my cubs” she said in Coptic love and care in her tone.
After the tearful goodbye with a couple hugs from the children she went I’ve to her body.
“My people want to say goodbye to you princess you’ve made a great first impression” she threw over her shoulders as she past me, climbing into her body.
I turned to the city people who were greatly cherished by her. To see them waiting to address me and once again bowed in farewell.
The crowd got up from their second bow with a smile, some calling out goodbyes, and others mostly waving to me and giving the wakandan greeting in respect to me.
They all slowly started to disappear with sand and wind. The shadows of cats run away into the changing scenery. One of the kids who played with me named Ife called out.
“Please come visit again princess” her smiling form whisked away with the wind and a tiny kitty running to follow the others.
I went through the portal door the warmth of the oasis leaving me. Now that I’m back in the tombs I am faced with a graveyard with gold statures in my wake.
“They were…”
“Dead”
I turned to see her now awake the ankh and sistrum tattooed to her arm along with our matching mark. She looked almost human.
Her eyes and tattooed face were an indignation of her otherworldly powers.
“Yeah, they were my first-ever followers since my creation they have allows held a special spot in my heart. After their death thousands of years ago they used to care and love for me living. I wanted to return the favor. Creating this part of the duat for them to spend eternity”
she continued coming out of her crypt.
The goddess brushed sand and dust out of her hair and body accepting my hand up.
I sighed resigned that I would be returning back to Wakanda and in turn seeing Namor once again.
We got out of the tomb to my aircraft an air of silence mutually settled between us in a break from all the magic and supernatural events. I really needed ten bottles of palm wine now that my fate has been set in stone.
“Griot set the air craft course for home” I ordered.
“Setting course for wakanda princess”
Chapter four: Answers
-Shuri-
“Ward like Child” I said incredulously at her explanation.
“You are my avatar and successor of my herb so you are my “child” in a sense as your protect your kingdom I protect, guide, and if need be take charge and go to war for you I will. It has been my duty before Wakanda and it shall be until the end of humanity and even then I’ll still be here.” She approached and sat perched on my lab table.
I hopped up, my mind racing for facts I skimmed of her.
In eygpt, her and sekhmet were thought of as a nursemaid to the pharaohs so the same is done in wakanda shouldn’t the herb be enough?
“I know it’s hard to believe but it’s the truth it’s been no secret I talked and met with Bashenga aiding him in his fight for peace by providing him an alternative. But to have everyone know I could be a guide/protector to you all, that I could blatantly instead of vaguely. Your lives would be different. It would have caused turmoil with the other tribes. Talk of favoritism as well as unstable power balance to name a few.” she continued.
Bast went on to explain more of the history of the bond between her and the black panthers.
“Wait you could possess us and we could gain almost demigod likeness” I looked at the cat? In disbelief.
“Yes along with your already prevalent powers in necromancy yes”
Necromancy. She must have sensed my turmoil and explained how due to the herb any child of the panther could obtain powers or enhancement.
I didn't believe it, me as a sort of magician hah.
“Whatever you say princess Shuri but soon you’ll see and you will need to be ready to be trained and prepared to control them.” Bast said seriously and brought out some artifacts.
“You will need these to find my body and I will be able to continue to guide you outside of this realm. I’m not asking you to meld and bond with me. Not many of you do but I am providing you an alternative to your life now. I wasn’t able to help answer your prayers in the past, that I regret. but if I could help ensure no more tragedies occur as you enter the rest of the world and protect your resources I will.”
A chord struck between us from that reminder of losing so much of the royal family in so small a time. I accepted begrudgingly.
“How will I know it’s you? Your tomb in wakanda…” i asked and this time I was given clues.
“Go to my city Bubastis although most are ruins some followers do reside there unbothered; as soon as you set foot there my body will know and seek you out. I could come as a cat, a child, a woman or a man. Either way I’ll come and more of your potential shall unlock. You’ll have a trusted ally to aid in your journey. Good luck Princess Shuri The Black Panther.”
With Those final words she hopped off the table turning to her panther form and she gave me a small nudge. I once again found myself moved through the ancestral.
I blinked to find myself in my little ritual space, the candles all blown out and the offerings gone except the sistrum and an ankh with instructions. It was well into the morning. I groaned and hissed as I stood to stretch my somewhat aching body and arm.
‘What the- Bast?!’
There on my arm was a pharaoh's hook and cattle prod that they are granted in life and buried with in death tattooed to my skin.
Guess that’s more evidence that this fever dream turned into reality.
“Princess your body seems to be well rested and quickly healed of aching due to the herb”
Griot reported bringing me back my attention to the event. I immediately cleaned up and started to pack.
“I’m to go to egypt to find her” I listed as I scanned and packed the ankh, sistrum, and instructions.
“Shall I order a plane ticket to Memphis, egypt?” My ai inquired.
I paused.
“No get my craft and send coordinates to Bubastis, Egypt. We'll be leaving now” I ordered while preparing a note for Nakia until I remembered that she an dToussaint will be back in a week.
I left a message either way.
A few hours later
I locked down the house and my lab and stood on the beach and did my signature Wakandan symbol as my personal aircraft sucked me in and sped away on auto pilot immediately to my destination.
I sat in the pilot’s seat tracing my arm deep in thought at everything I’d learned and experienced in the last few days now.
Bast was an interesting god and is still as infuriating as ever. She reminded me too much of …mother. From her stance, regalness, etc. It hurt.
‘I wonder if T’chal-’ I shook away the thought.
I occupied my time reserching Bubastis and Bast’s temples.
‘How can I find her tomb’
‘Aren’t these all ruins?’
‘What if I get caught by authorities? This is a very confusing version of the colonizers game of 'where's Waldo' if I’ve ever seen one.’
“Princess we are here”
I looked up at Griot’s announcement to see the city of Memphis, its pyramids, sphynx, and the nile. Finally, beyond it Bubastis. A city of ruins.
Chapter three: panther goddess pt.2
-Shuri-
In Wakanda, when the five tribes fought for control of vibranium the first black panther and king Bashenga received a vision from Bast, which led him to the heart-shaped herb. It granted him the power to become the king and the first black panther.
There were many other legends and religions when it came to Bast. When a man‘s soul reaches the afterlife they're brought by Bast and Sekhmet to a mythical green valley where he can run freely and be in peace for all eternity.
She is also known as an ennead who alongside Thoth, Kokou, Mujaji, Ptah, and Nyami are the orishas(Yoruba/African deities). Bast inherited her father Ra’s life-giving solar heat making her a fertility goddess and Sekhmet inherited Ra’s fiery destructive fury.
In Egypt, the city of Bubastis(lower Eygpt) and Memphis(capital) worshipped bast and she was known as a goddess of pleasure, dancing, and music. Also the goddess of the home, domesticity, women’s secrets, cats, fertility, and childbirth. In her lore, she was associated with the eye of Ra(The all-seeing eye) which played a part in her birth. She was also known as the distant goddess(a female deity who leaves Ra and returns to bring transformation).
Bast name comes in many forms such as Bastet, bsst, Ubasti, Ubaste, etc. They were speculated to mean “She of the ointment jar” as she was associated with protection, protective ointments, perfume, and sweet smells(associated with Nefertum who was thought to be her son).
Her offerings consist of Cat statues and pictures, Sweet liquids like wine, honey, milk, perfume, in the form of salves, beer, and whiskey, catnip, fish, a sistrum to ward evil, red candles, moonstone, tiger’s eye, and mint.
The random information poured through my mind melded together in a mindless mumble I pity anyone who would read my thoughts and facts in this time-constricted moment. As I got out my items and looked them over in contemplation.
‘This has to work if I don’t get answers soon my mind might explode and I’d have gone completely crazy given everything.’
I stepped aside and looked at my work I created a space/altar to reach her and get my dreams clearer. With a bit of science, I constructed a strain specifically of the new herb to get a connection to the ancestral plane and pinpoint her location here goes.
===========
A few hours later
I looked at my handiwork I made a decent altar with a statue of bast egyptian avatar and one of wakanda’s depictions of her. I laid the forementioned foods and perfume before it and place some candles in a big circle around me.
“Alright let’s do this Bast…please see this” I sat down and uncorked the strain of the herb.
‘If this works I’ll finally be able shove it in the elders face that the girl who lacked tradition pulled off a meeting with our god scientifically with a dash of tradition point shuri.’ I thought in anticipation as I felt the effects immediately. I got into a meditative position and said the prayer.
“Panther goddess bastet hear me now I seek counsel”
I sat in dread please work please work. My vision soon started to blur and change a flickering of two realms my place in haiti and the ancestral plane.
“I am here now daughter of the golden tribe” I felt that warmth once again and a blinding light filled my sense my soul trajecting into the ancestral plane.
My vision finally cleared and I found myself in my lab in wakanda and instead of being dressed in white clothing I wore something akin to my track suit. Ehn what is this.
“Hello little panther” the voice said and my head snapped in the direction to see Her.
Dressed in an traditional egyptian garb she stood poised in welcome purple red eyes gleaming. Bast.
I could have fainted, my mind racing in probabilities of how it just couldn’t be. She was not real her appearance a ruse, illusion but there she was The panther Goddess Bast.
‘What should I say Hello, my goddess, took you long enough’. I contemplated the last one mother’s and the whole of wakanda’s voices echo in my mind in a reprimand of Shuri.
If Bast didn’t smite me for the slight disrespect mother would have clawed her way out of wherever she was with our family in the royal wing of our afterlife to do it herself.
“Why my lab? Last time we met we were in your…home?” I opted to say instead.
“I wanted you to be comfortable in a setting your used to for this. It’s nice to meet my new panther and ward”. Wait, ward.
“As part of the mantle a part of my soul shadows you as my duty”
Chapter two: Cat goddess
The story of Bast is a very complicated one in ancient lore and mythology she was born from fire and tamed. She began as her sister Sekhmet bore from Ra’s eye, anger, and senility sent to punish humanity for refusing to worship and respect him.
The new goddess almost laid waste to all of Egypt drinking from the blood of her victims even going against Ra (through the urging of the other gods) when he asked her to stop. With the combined efforts of the gods and remaining humans, they tricked Sekhmet into mixing a concoction of blood and red wine.
They poured 7,000 barrels of the drink down the streets giving the illusion of a river of blood. Sekhmet drank it all until she passed out asleep and was finally tamed. From a part of her godly essence, Bastet was formed.
As Sekhmet awoke she saw Ptah and fell in love with him becoming his wife she continued on as a war goddess more tamed now and in protecting Ra a job shared and later passed on to Bastet and the Pharaohs. Ra leaves his demi form and continues his duties as a sun god on his boat raising the sun and fighting Apophis. Leaving Osiris to take the throne as god and pharaoh to Humanity.

-Third person-
“What do we do now?”
“Is father sure that she has been tamed?”
“What about this new Goddess what if she’s worse?”
A small figure whimpered at that last comment her ears drawn back in sadness and fear she dint know what was going on. One minute she was waiting for her sister to say it was okay and explain why they were separated. Maybe introduce her to papa. But he was gone and my sister was sleeping in a god’s arms.
“Enough everything has been settled Sekhmet isn’t after humans for Ra’s rage anymore nor for enjoyment, Ra has finally continued in his true form, and humans are safe now. Go and continue with your duties we have a lot to clean up and repair.” The god holding Sekhmet cut in sharply stopping all comments. The other gods left to do their jobs and prepare for the new king.
Ptah approached the tiny goddess and gave her a smile.
“Hi little kit how do you feel?” he asked and she mumbled an
“Tired and hurt”
“Where?” he asked alarmed
“Here and here” she replied pointing to her head and heart.
“Well I know just the thing to help with that join me?” he held out a hand she took it and finally stepped out into the light.
“A child” a passerby gasped.
The two gods paid them no mind, Ptah lifted her up allowing her to curl into her sister’s lap and rest. Taking her to one of her many homes until she was ready to attend to her duties and share her sister’s roles.
At Ptah's main temple
“Better Kit?” he asked as she drank some tea and milk with honey helping her headache.
Bastet listened attentively to Thoth who stayed behind to inform bastet of the history of their families and her coming role as a goddess. Her heartache was buried with the information of being able to help the humans and atone for her and her sister’s rampage.
“Yes, when can I help?” Bast asked staring up at him with her galaxy-purple cat eyes.
“Later, for now, rest and listen you have a lot to unlock and learn about yourself before you can attend to the humans kit.” He said patting her head and turning back to a sleeping Sekhmet.
Bastet half listened to Thoth and stared at the open space.
“But who will these souls turn to?” She mumbled
Her tail stood straight at attention at the figures of humans wandering aimlessly looking for help and calling out but no one could hear them at least no one but her.
