If his hair is tousled, it’s because Izuku ran his hands through it, grinning cheekily as he teases Shouto with light words. If his lips are puffy, it’s because Izuku spent the afternoon kissing him, nipping at his lips and whispering over and over how much he loves him. If he has a speck of food on his cheek, Izuku will lean forward with his thumb and wipe it off for him…
Being messy means being loved, and Shouto finds he likes it that way.

This week, we’re focusing on the theme and origin of our zine: the red string of fate!
The String of Fate revolves around a common belief in East Asian mythology: that two souls are tied together with a red string, and the person at the other end is their true love. The string is usually invisible, but some souls are lucky enough to be granted the chance to see the string. There are many variants on these strings in fanfiction, like having platonic soulmates or not having a string and still finding a life partner.
Our opinion of this AU
Mod Lie and I (Mod Anna) had a lot of fun when crafting the name of this zine. We spent many hours throwing around words about souls being bound together in many different universes, having “Linked Fates” or “Chained Destinies”… a few hours were spent just yelling “Fated Links? Fates? Fated? Links? Linking of the Fates that Are Fated to Be Linked!” XD
When we talked about the string of fate, everything clicked together, talking about the “threads” that tie people together. Funny how we discovered the fate of the zine by talking about the string of fate :)
We wanted to portray TDDK in many different universes, and have sweet and special meetings that draw them together. The “serendipity” is in how Shouto and Izuku are always in the perfect place and time, to find each other, again, no matter which universe they’re in. Maybe there are no destined soulmates in the AU, but for some reason, the stars continue to align, and they want to come back to each other.
Fate is fickle and always ready to trip you up. But sometimes, it can work out in your favor, the “threads” pulling you in the right direction. What is your favorite part about tied destinies? We’re eager to hear your thoughts on this AU! And if you have any other AUs or prompts you’d like to see us discuss, please hit our inbox! We’ll be back next week with another AU! Preorders open soon, so be on the lookout! - Threads Mod Team

For someone who once claimed to be indifferent towards their career, Todoroki Shouto looks very content in front of the camera. His sharp jaw and high cheekbones have shifted over time, cold, stoic marble now yielding to the river flowing around him. A small smile blooms on his face, fitting seamlessly into the peaceful aura of the room, the soft lighting glancing off his delicate features.
Of course, this relaxed behavior on set may be due to who is behind the camera, his recently revealed long-time boyfriend, photographer Midoriya Izuku. Midoriya calls out directions in between bubbles of laughter, the bright tone drawing out small smiles from his boyfriend.
Todoroki Shouto reflects on how his relationship with photographer Midoriya Izuku has helped shape his modeling career. *** Here’s my piece for the TDDK Style Zine! It was a really fun project, and it turned out great! If you’d like to see the free, downloadable PDF, check out @tddkmodelzine!

“THEES IS A DEE-SASTER!”
The class 2-A students, lounging in the dormitory common area, whipped their heads toward the sound of the slamming door; a panting Kaminari held onto it like a lifeline. Still, his mouth stretched into a maniacal grin as he tried to stabilize his breathing.
Jirou, the first to recover from the intrusion, leaned back in her chair, thumbing through her book. “Don’t worry, everyone. Kaminari is just being an idiot and exposing his meme obsession to the world.”
A few of the class members relaxed their stances. They had been taught to jump at the first sign of trouble, and Kaminari’s entrance had caused their flight or flight instincts to kick in. Ashido and Hagakure both sighed with relief, collapsing into each other on the couch. Reacting as the class president, Iida pushed up his glasses and gesticulated widely. “That was an unwise decision to make, Kaminari-kun. Our class has been taught to expect danger at all times, so I’m sure we were all frightened when you made such an appearance!”
Kaminari grimaced. “Sorry, Iida. But there’s actually something disastrous going on!” The study group, composed of the girls of 2-A and Iida, put down their materials to give their attention to Kaminari. Uraraka looked excited, but Yaoyorozu’s face betrayed her anxiety. Her faith in Kaminari-kun had dwindled after one too many incidents in the classroom. After the failed ‘improved and blasty’ firecrackers accident, she always felt an air of doom when Kaminari had an announcement to make.
Jirou, who liked to entertain Kaminari’s antics for her own amusement, huffed a laugh, lazily beckoning him forward. “So, what has you yelling on this Saturday afternoon?”
Kaminari, smiling wide, clapped his hands together. “What if I told you I know of the absolute greatest, nay,” He held up a finger to enunciate his words. “The most amazing thing has occurred to one of our classmates, and how we will all benefit from the outcome of this event?”
Uraraka narrowed her eyes before murmuring something to Asui. Deciding not to play into Kaminari’s temptation, Jirou remained silent. Ashido and Hagakure turned to one another before looking back to Kaminari, who was twitching with excitement. Finally, Yaoyorozu broke the anticipation hanging in the air. “Well, I suppose we’d like to hear exactly what happened.”
Kaminari offered a gesture of placation, moving forward and pulling a chair towards him. Instead of sitting down in the chair, he raised one leg onto the seat, leaning forward conspiratorially. “Well, young lads and lassies.” He tipped his imaginary hat, winking. “It all started early this morn’, a day like any other, or so it would appear!” He waved his hands in a dramatic fashion to enrapture them all in his words.
Jirou, however, was having none of it. “Drop the accent and get on with the story or I’ll deafen you for the next hour.”
Kaminari finger-gunned in her direction. “Don’t threaten me with a good time.” However, he acquiesced, turning the chair around to sit on it backwards. “Okay, but I wasn’t kidding. Something super amazing did happen!”
“Is this like the time when you claimed the amount of viewers on your latest Tik Tok video was ‘super amazing,’ kero?” Tsuyu asked, lips twitching with withheld laughter.
Kaminari blushed, while Jirou howled with laughter. Ashido and Hagakure snickered, not bothering to hide their giggles. Yaoyorozu tried to quietly reprimand them.
“Ahem.” Kaminari’s cough failed to hide his growing embarrassment. “Well, yes, this is even more amazing than that.”
Uraraka groaned emphatically, putting her hand to her head. “Can you just tell us already? You’ve built it up enough that I’m hoping it lives up to the hype, unlike another live-action remake of a previously good film.”
Kaminari nodded, solemnly. “Yes, it truly is a tragedy that Hollywood is ruining our favorite movies.” He sighed. “Okay, so! You know how I’ve been patrolling with Freezeframe, recently, as part of work experience?”
“Yes, I’ve heard you’ve been doing well on your biweekly patrols with him!” Iida cut his hands through the air. “Though I have not seen you in action while on my own patrol, I have caught you in the news from time to time!”
Kaminari grinned, a slight blush to his cheeks. “Thanks, prez! He’s a good teacher.” Shaking his head, Kaminari continued. “Back to the point. So, I was patrolling, like any good future pro, and guess who I saw?”
Yaoyorozu raised her eyebrow. “From your tone of voice, I’m assuming you saw one of our classmates?”
Kaminari snapped his fingers. “Bingo! While on my way through one of the city sectors, I caught sight of Todoroki on the other side of the street!”
“I’m hoping you didn’t interrupt him while we was working, right, Kaminari?” Iida said.
“Actually, no.” Kaminari twisted his fingers together. “Well, technically he wasn’t really busy at the time! He was actually talking to a young kid.”
The girls cooed in admiration of the class’ prince. Their cold classmate had slowly opened up to all of them, and it bled into his hero work. Ashido punched her fist into the air. “Aw, I’m so jealous! Seeing the prettiest boy in school talking to a young fan must have been so adorable!”
Kaminari snickered. “Yeah, it was pretty cute.” He stifled another giggle as he continued. “After I crossed the street to say hi, I saw the kid burst into tears.” Kaminari’s audience reacted in kind, murmuring to each other in concern. “It was fine! I promise. I thought the same thing too, so I got closer to see if I could help. But, then! The kid shot forward and clung onto Todoroki’s leg, smearing snot all over his hero costume. I’ve never seen Todoroki look that uncomfortable before, by the way.” The girls giggled, Iida trying to shush them. “So he started patting his head, which made the kid cry even more, but he reached upward to grab Todoroki’s hand and then…”
“What?!” Ashido exclaimed. “What happened?”
“Well.” Kaminari grinned widely. “His hand glowed a bright blue, which made him shiver for a second. I had to avoid looking at it directly because the glare was so powerful. As soon as the light faded, he had this… contemplative look in his eye and…”
“Finish the damn story, Kaminari!” Uraraka yelled.
“Todoroki sprung forward, wrapping the kid up in his arms!”
“What?” Yaoyorozu looked baffled. “That doesn’t sound like Todoroki-kun…”
“Exactly!” Kaminari exclaimed. “By the time I got to them, the kid’s mother, who had been watching the whole time, immediately started apologizing and explained that her kid had gotten so overwhelmed at meeting Todoroki that he accidentally used his quirk on him!”
“Kaminari-kun!” Iida’s disapproval evident in his voice. “It is not good to make light of another person’s injury, especially your classmates!”
“Is he alright?” Uraraka asked. She didn’t think Kaminari would speak this way if he was, though.
“Yeah, he’s fine! Great, actually!” The door to the dormitory swung open, which made Kaminari’s maniacal grin grow in magnitude. “I think that’s him right now! Oh, Todoroki-kun!” He called over his shoulder, in a sing-song voice. “How are you feeling?”
Todoroki entered the room, eyes downcast. As he shuffled in, the girls looked to each other for support, expecting the worst.
Kaminari snickered, patting Todoroki on the back. “What’s the matter, fella? You were so much happier earlier.”
Todoroki stood up, sighing. He looked out the window, at the setting sun. “My love has not returned to me/ I cannot go on until he be.”
The girls exchanged a series of glances in quick succession. Ashido mouthed ‘rhyme?’, while Uraraka shrugged her shoulders. Iida’s eyes widened, mirroring Yaoyorozu’s.
“Are you feeling alright, Todoroki-kun?” Yaoyorozu asked.
“Each day draws another to a close/ Yet all I have to show for it is this prose.” Todoroki flopped down onto the couch, sighing heavily. He shifted his bangs forward to guard his expression.
The assembled group grew concerned, and even Kaminari looked a little sheepish. “He was fine until just now. In fact, he looked really happy, the last I saw of him.”
“Hmm, he was talking about love…” Uraraka said. Then, her face turned mischievous. “Hold on, I’ll be right back!”
She sprinted to the staircase, gone before any of them had a chance to say a word. Tsuyu looked at Todoroki thoughtfully. “Todoroki, does this have anything to do with Midoriya-chan?”
At the sound of Midoriya’s name, Todoroki snapped to attention. He stood up, pacing the room. “The love that swims in my veins/ Permeates through the everlasting flames. When I wake and when I sleep/ He is the only thing I keep.”
Ashido snickered, turning to Kaminari. “Maybe coming back to the dorms reminded him of his unrequited love?” Yaoyorozu nodded in agreement, seeing where she was going. “It appears this quirk makes him more emotional and forces him to speak in rhyme.”
“Ah, yes!” Kaminari pointed to her. “You’re right! The kid’s mother called it the ‘Tortured Poet’ quirk. It renders the person to respond to their innermost feelings, making them known through rhyme.” His eyes narrowed, sharp with an evil gleam. “Maybe we should get Midoriya to see how Todoroki reacts.”
Hagakure giggled as she pointed to the doorway. “I think we’re about to find out.”
The door to the stairwell burst open, with Uraraka dragging Midoriya behind her. He looked completely bewildered. “What could you possibly have to show me, Uraraka-san? I wanted to finish the next chapter of my notes today!”
“You can worry about your nerdy obsessions later, Deku-kun.” She pushed him forward, lacing her fingers together. “I think you’ll like this surprise.”
Todoroki, who had been distracted by the sunset again, turned to face Midoriya. Instantly, his solemn expression turned to one of glee, and he raced forward. He took hold of Midoriya’s hand in one, caressing his face with the other. Midoriya blushed a deep red, sputtering, “Todo-todo- wha-what are you—?”, but Todoroki didn’t listen to him.
“Another day without your presence in my life/ Would torture my very soul, leave me in everlasting strife.” He tucked a lock of hair behind Midoriya’s ear. “The sound of your voice, the smell of your skin, the feel of your hair/ Without it, I have nothing more to care.”
“Uh—Um-Uh-wha?” Midoriya blushed even brighter. He turned to his snickering classmates. “What’s going on?”
“I don’t know, Midoriya-kun,” Kaminari said, expressing too much sorrow to be real. “He was so sad until you got here. Right, Todoroki-kun?”
Todoroki nodded, but did not gaze away from the man in front of him. Midoriya seemed to be avoiding his eyes at all costs, pleading with his friends for an explanation. “Safety only with him/ Sorrow if I cannot have him/ My every breath hangs on his every whim.”
“Woah, changing from couplets, this time!” Uraraka giggled mercilessly, making Midoriya shoot a glare in her direction. “He must really like you, Deku-kun!”
“To like is intangible, unsustainable.” Todoroki brushed his thumb over Midoriya’s heated cheek. “To love is the fruit of all we’re capable.”
Midoriya squeaked. Ashido and Hagakure were overcome by giggles. Tsuyu tried to contain her throaty croaks, but ultimately failed. Iida looked almost as bad as Midoriya, blushing deeply and gaping widely, unsure of what to do.
Midoriya started to chuckle, awkwardly. He gently, but sternly, pushed away from Todoroki. “Ah, ha, ha, guys, very funny.” Though Midoriya looked like he found it anything but funny. His tight grin betrayed his strain. “I see. Great joke. Todoroki-kun must be under the effects of a love quirk.” The girls tried to chime in, but he held up his hand. “This is all very entertaining, but I really need to, uh, get back, and do, some uh, stuff. Bye!” Midoriya speed-walked out of the room, ignoring the calls behind him. Everyone looked at each other, shell-shocked.
Todoroki fell to the ground in a crouch, clutching his knees to his chest.
Kaminari was the first to break the silence, releasing an awkward chuckle. “Well. That’s not what I had planned.”
Uraraka laced a hand through her hair. “I thought this would be a good opportunity for Deku-kun to realize Todoroki-kun’s feelings.”
“Yeah, well.” Tsuyu said. “Now he thinks we did all this to play a prank on him, kero.”
Yaoyorozu frowned. Her gaze drifted toward Todoroki, who was mumbling to himself. “Are you okay, Todoroki-kun?”
Todoroki-kun looked up at her, face miserable. “The dark skies never leave/ Alone, my heart can only grieve.” His words ended in a groan, and he shifted on the ground until he could hold himself in the fetal position, rocking back and forth in agony. “Love is my very strength, my very weakness/ Without him to hold, I suffer in the bleakness.”
“Alright, Shakespeare, we get it.” Ashido leaned down to pat him on the head, but Todoroki swatted her off in agitation.
“Only his touch will bring me peace!” He glared at Ashido. “Without it, my cries will never cease.” When Ashido backed down, Todoroki resumed his rocking, mumbling Midoriya’s name in his long, woeful couplets.
Yaoyorozu watched her friend, dispirited. “I believe we went about this in the wrong way. Maybe we should have waited for them to come to terms with their feelings on their own.”
Hagakure groaned, flopping back on the couch. “Yeah, well, we’ve already had to deal with it for this long, I don’t know how much more I can take.” She motioned towards Todoroki. “And hearing his terrible poetry makes it so much worse.”
Having pushed down most of his own embarrassment, Iida finally spoke. “Yes, well, I quite agree with your sentiment. However, our conduct today was not permissible in the slightest. I feel deeply regretful for my actions by not intervening sooner.”
“So.” Tsuyu turned to the others. “What do we do, now?”

Title: Coffee + Cream
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Pairing: Midoriya Izuku/Todoroki Shouto
Additional Tags: Fluff, Flirting, Teasing, Coffee Shop AU, Light and Fun
Words: 1,778
Summary: Shouto, a student at university, relies on coffee to get him through his semester. What will he do when his favorite cafe is closed for renovations?
________________________________________________________________
University was kicking Shouto’s ass. With finals seasons only a month away, his professors had decided (like they were trying to screw their students over, he thought) to kick it into high gear. He had numerous projects and essays to finish, some worth over half his grade, and they were really running him ragged as he attempted to complete them all. Not unlike most students, he debated dropping out during the many nights he spent awake until the early hours, contemplating whether it would be better to just go to sleep and accept failure.
Luckily, Shouto had a cure for getting through his many sleep-deprived days: a latte with four extra shots of espresso and steamed almond milk, prepared for him by his favorite coffee shop. It was nearby his apartment, so he could stop by before class and enjoy the caffeine energizing his system.
However, today, on a morning when he desperately needed the caffeine boost, a notice on the café door destroyed all his plans.
“Closed?!”
The café was apparently going through renovations for the next few weeks, meaning Shouto would be unable to indulge in his caffeine kick until then. Frustrated, Shouto blew piece of his hair away from his face.
Well. This sucked.
Shouto checked the time on his phone. If he went to a different café, he could still be on time to class. He searched for nearby coffee shop on his phone, clicked the closest, and started his journey to the café.
The air blew through his long hair, his long locks flowing in the wind. He tried to keep the hair away from his face, but the waves had a mind of their own. Whipping out a hair band from his wrist, he tied his hair back, keeping his speed as he walked. He kept a fast pace, used to the exertion due to his agile livelihood. Weaving through passerbys, Shouto made sure he followed the directions on his phone.
He made it to the café in a timely manner. The shop was still fairly close to his apartment, and on the way to his class, according to his phone. Shouto locked his screen and pushed the door open into the warm coffee shop.
Blissful scents of baking pastries and hot coffee greeted his nose. The coffee shop had a lot of people in it, the patrons’ conversations creating a cacophony of sound. Shouto looked around the warm room, thinking the modern decorations were very attractive. He flitted toward the short line, repeating his memorized order in his mind, just in case he forgot it.
He reached the front of the line quickly, and after glancing at the menu, prepared to give the cashier his order.
“Hello, yes, I’d like a latte—”
Shouto cut off, finally meeting the eyes of the person at the register.
Woah.
“Sorry, what did you want? You kind of cut off right there,” the cashier said, laughing.
Shouto’s mind went completely blank, mesmerized by the eyes of the cashier. They were green, shining in the café light, and matching his whirlwind of tousled curls. He had a cute nose, with a smattering of freckles across his flushed cheeks. His bone structure gave him the appearance of softness, but a hidden strength underneath.
Well. Maybe not hidden, Shouto thought, looking down to the man’s chest. The wide breadth of the smaller man’s chest was obviously muscular, obvious even with his clothes.
“Uhhhhhhh—”
“Oh! Do you need any help? I can probably whip something up if I know what you like.” The man smiled at Shouto again, and Shouto, who had finally regained some semblance of sanity, short-circuted. Wow. His smile could light a thousand forest fires.
Shouto shook his head, trying to restart his brain. Though he already knew what he was going to order, he wanted to keep talking to the cute cashier. “What do you suggest?”
“Hmm.” The cashier tapped a pen against his chin. God, that was adorable. “It’s cold out, so I wouldn’t suggest anything frozen or iced, unless you plan on staying inside. I generally enjoy warm drinks anyway, like lattes or cappuccinos. Depending on if you like it sweet or bitter, I can add syrups or use less milk. We also have dairy substitutions, if you’re into that. It really depends on how strong you like your coffee. Or if you like espresso in the first place. Maybe you’d just enjoy a black coffee. Do you like espresso?”
Shouto blinked back at the cashier, who turned a deep red. The cashier scratched his neck, grinning sheepishly. “Uh, sorry. I tend to ramble a lot, especially when I’m nervous.”
Shouto’s lips twitched. This man was getting cuter by the minute. “Why would you be nervous?”
“Uh-well-that’s—ahaha.” The man turned an even deeper red, fiddling with his pen and mumbling. “I tend to get nervous around pretty people.”
It was Shouto’s turn to blush. He laughed awkwardly, and the green-haired man let out a few awkward chuckles of his own. “Uh. Thanks. You’re not so bad yourself.”
The cashier’s face brightened, somehow appreciating Shouto’s lame attempt at a compliment. “Thanks! Now, did you still need help, or do you know what you want?”
Shouto finally remembered his purpose for coming the shop. He shook his head again, trying to find his train of thought. “I’d like a latte, with almond milk and 4 extra shots of espresso.”
The cashier blinked back at him. He laughed. “Woah, alright, then. I guess you need your caffeine.”
Shouto chuckled. “You have no idea.”
The cashier smiled, writing his order on the cup. “Do you have a name for that order?”
“Shouto.”
The cashier smirked. “Shouto. That’s a nice name. A nice name for an even nicer person.”
Shouto tried to think of a witty response, but his tongue was all tied up at the sight of the beautiful man in front of him. Finally, he managed to say, “What’s your name?”
The cashier winked, pointing to his nametag. “Izuku.”
“Ah. Izuku.”
“Are you going to continue to stare or will you let me make your order?” Izuku smiled, twirling his pen around.
“Ah. Right. You should. Go. Do that.”
Izuku laughed, beginning to prepare Shouto’s drink. “I can still talk while I’m working.”
“What about your other customers?” Shouto asked.
Izuku laughed. “Do you see anyone else waiting?”
Shouto looked around. Everyone else had already been served, and he was the only one left in line. “Oh.”
Izuku chuckled again. “So, Shouto. Are you on your way to class this morning?”
“Ah, yes.” Izuku nodded, urging Shouto to continue. “It’s a literature class.”
“Oh, are you studying literature?” Izuku asked, as he prepared the espresso shots and steamed the milk.
“No.” Shouto shook his head. “I’m studying law. It’s just an elective class I thought would be fun.”
“Oh, cool,” Izuku said. “I’m studying pre-med. I hope to become a doctor of some kind. Maybe an anesthesiologist or a surgeon of some sort? I’m not really sure, right now. Hopefully I figure it out soon.”
“Wow,” Shouto said. “That’s amazing. I have a great respect for those pursuing medical degrees. It seems very challenging.”
Izuku laughed, as he poured the shots and steamed milk together. His deft hands poured the milk gently, holding back the foam with his spoon. “Thanks. Luckily, I was blessed with a very analytical mind, so studying comes naturally to me.”
“That’s awesome,” Shouto said. A cute guy with an ambitious attitude. How was he already enthralled with this man, only a few minutes after knowing him?
“Yeah. I’ve always wanted to save people, so.” Izuku put a cap on the drink, arranging a sleeve on the cup. “This way I can make it possible.”
Shouto smiled softly. “That seems like an honorable goal.”
“Thanks,” Izuku said, smiling at Shouto. “Your drink is finished. Oh. Wait!” Izuku turned away from Shouto for a second. Shouto watched, but was unable to see anything due to Izuku’s body. He wondered what the barista was doing. Finally, Izuku turned back, offering the drink to Shouto. “There. Hope you enjoy!”
Shouto nodded, carefully taking the drink from Izuku. “Thank you.” He paused, about to turn to go. “Uh, maybe I’ll see you again, sometime?”
Izuku laughed. “Okay. Just text me. I’ll tell you when I work, or.” Izuku winked. “When I’m free to hang out.”
Shouto blushed a deep red. “Uh, yeah. Sure. I’ll do that.” He moved to leave, but then stopped. Shouto made his way back toward the counter. “But, I don’t have your number?
Izuku giggled, hiding his smile behind his hand. Shouto could see the outline of a dimple in his right cheek. “Check the side of your cup, Shouto.”
“Huh?” Shouto said. He checked the side. “I don’t see anything?”
Izuku rolled his eyes, huffing a laugh. “Beneath the sleeve.”
Shouto moved the sleeve. An elegant script was written on the side:
Maybe I can buy you a coffee sometime?

Izuku <3
Shouto blushed again. “Oh.”
Izuku laughed. “I’ll probably still be here after your class, so if you need another caffeine kick, or a place to study.” Izuku spun his pen around, and offered a wink. “You know where to find me.”
“Okay,” Shouto mumbled. He sighed, looking at his phone. “I have to get to class, but thank you.”
“No problem,” Izuku said. He began to wipe the counters. “I’ll see you around?”
“Yeah,” Shouto said. “See you around.”
The bell dinged behind him as Shouto left the coffee shop. He turned to face the blustery wind, walking towards the direction of his class. A small smile met his lips.
Well. That was fun.
He took a sip of his drink, blowing a bit to cool the top. The warm liquid moved through his lips, flowing down his throat and warming his insides.
Holy shit.
Shouto looked at the cup. What had that man done to his drink? The bitter espresso mixed with the almond milk… it was perfection. He could taste the bold flavor of the beans, along with the creamy, light milk. The contrast was amazing, fulfilling and overwhelming his taste buds. Damn. This was the best coffee he had ever had.
Shouto shook his head, smiling. Well. Even if he hadn’t been so infatuated with the cashier, he would have to come back for the stellar coffee.
Facing against the windy, biting breeze, Shouto couldn’t help but feel optimistic. Pressing deadlines, late-night studying sessions, final projects… they all left his brain.
All that remained was a warm drink in his hand, and a beautiful barista, captivating him with a smile.
Hmm. This could be… interesting.

Light and shadow danced across Shouto’s face, a small smile reflecting the warmth of the candlelit flames. He looked toward his friends, who were arranged in a circle around him. They mirrored his expression of inner happiness, their grins shining in the low light.
He could not believe his luck. After many long, lonely years, he had finally found friends who loved and supported him. No longer did he need to face his demons alone. Now, he could reach out a hand, and find a warm one encircling his own, to face the darkness together.
Shouto did this now, wrapping his fingers around the hand next to him, smiling softly at the boy.
“You did this? For me?” Shouto asked him.
He received a smile in return. The boy, Izuku, leaned close to his ear. “Of course. I wouldn’t miss out on your birthday. I care about you.” He motioned to the circle of friends. “We all care about you.”
His friends voiced their agreement, saying “we love you, Todoroki-kun!” and “you’re amazing, man.” No one stayed silent, and even the brittle blonde gave a “I guess you’re alright” after a little prompting.
Shouto looked down at his hands, the one intertwined with Izuku’s and the one left on his own. The warmth of a loved one, he decided, was much better than facing the world alone.
He looked up, at his friends all around him. His lips twitched upwards, forming a smile, something he seemed to be doing a lot of these days.
“Well, can we sing you happy birthday, now?” Izuku smirked, nudging him in the side.
Shouto laughed, a quiet and short one, as if his body did not know how to react to this odd action. “Go right ahead.”
His friends sang jovially, and though most were off-key, Shouto appreciated their expressive enthusiasm. Some swayed with the beat, others laughed while they sang, and some just nodded their heads, enjoying the moment for what it was: a simple second of pure, honest friendship.
As they concluded their tune, Izuku leaned forward and whispered in Shouto’s ear. “Make a wish!”
Shouto thought for a minute, placing a finger to his lips. Then, with all the strength in his lungs, he blew out the candles. His friends, his classmates, cheered, wishing him a year full of love and happiness.
When they cut the cake and passed out plates, Izuku leaned into him again, resting his head on Shouto’s shoulder.
“What did you wish for?” He asked.
Shouto looked around, at the loud, carefree people surrounding him: at Kaminari, shoving Sero’s face in cake, at Ochako, stuffing her face and sighing happily with Tsuyu, at Yaoyorozu, laughing quietly at Iida’s attempts to control the troublemakers.
Shouto chuckled, laughing to himself. Then, he turned to Izuku. “Does it count if it’s already come true?”
Izuku smiled at him, his eyes aglow. He turned his head upward, placing a warm, soft kiss on Shouto’s cheek. “Wanting things to remain the same is a great wish.”
But no, Shouto thought. He didn’t want them to remain the same.
He wanted them to keep growing, to keep learning, to keep caring, to keep healing.
To keep… loving.
He sighed, burying his face in Izuku’s hair. Around them, the party continued on, with laughter and jokes and happiness all around. But he stayed where he was, taking a second to pause for a moment.
Shouto breathed in. And out.
Peace. At last.
