“Oh dear, another one lost. Another attempt failed. I try and I try, and there’s nothing but loss.”
You could hear Jervis’ pitiful tone as you walked down the corridor, mumbled words, some unintelligible, some nonsensical, all of them coated in despair and sadness. It wasn’t the first time he’d been caught, but it was the first time since you’d been under his employ, and as you made your way through the GCPD, you wondered if you could bear to do it again. He sounded so sad, so downtrodden. You were far more used to him excited and energetic, focused on his work and enthusiastically optimistic about his plans.
Now, as you approached the cell he was being held in, you braced yourself, aware that he would be sensitive, almost a different person, and you would have to be gentle, delicate when speaking to him.
And then you were there, turning a corner and seeing him, forlorn and sorrowful, sitting on the bench in the cell. Caught once more by Batman after another of his attempts to make him his Alice. You wondered why it was always him. Jervis had mentioned his reasons in passing, and you’d gleaned that it was something about his kindness. You imagined it was his care for the citizens of Gotham. After all, to Jervis, goodness was what Jervis cherished most in this world in other people.
As much as you enjoyed that about him, it had bothered you that he hadn’t noticed that same kindness in you. Despite how much of it you offered to him. In fact, you reserved it for him most of the time. It was easy to care for him deeply, even easier to feel like you had to protect him, had to encourage him. He needed it so badly. And now, you were here to offer it to him again, in one of his lower moments.
Stepping into the cell with Jervis, you watched as the guard closed the door again after you, locking you in there with your duties. You approached Jervis slowly, feeling a pang in your heart as he looked to you, scared at first, the fear melting away when he realised it was only you. And then his eyes watered began to water again, and he cast them to the floor as you spoke.
“Jervis, it’ll be ok.”
Without looking up at you, he went into a small tantrum, his hands being thrown out to the side to punctuate his words, emphatic in his insistence that it would not be ok.
“Your words don’t mean anything in the face of the evidence! It is not fine, it is not ok. It never is. Never. Not for me. Not for my work. It’s not ok and it’s not going to be, either.”
Undeterred, aware that you were the one tenuous link to reality and optimism he had left, you continued, pushing past his hysterics and putting on the most comforting tone you could in the face of your own nerves.
“Maybe… maybe, Jervis, you’re just looking for the wrong thing… or the wrong person?”
“I can assure you that I am not.”
Heartbroken, you sat down next to him anyway, content to just be there for him. He was worth your kindness regardless.
In a move you were surprised by yourself, you put your arm around him, moving the other one to pull him into you until you were wrapped around his body, hugging him. The first hug you’d shared with him, the first physical affection between you both ever, in fact. And he was accepting it.
Not wanting to push things, or to overstep any boundaries in your professional relationship, you decided to end the embrace, standing up and smoothing down your shirt as you cleared your throat.
“I have to go… I need to speak to the lawyer now. But I’ll be back. And it will be ok, Jervis. You have to believe that.”
Despite sharing that moment with him, you could still feel your heart low in your chest, disappointed that the sweetness had been soured by his previous assertion that he did know the right person he was looking for. It saddened you, but you needed to stay strong, if only for him.
You were unaware, however, that Jervis was watching you go, eyes wide with wonder as his belief in you rose, and he realised that there was perhaps a chance that he was wrong after all. So he bid you farewell, quiet enough that you couldn’t hear it, but unintentionally so.
“Goodbye, Alice.”
“i want him” i say about the most deranged, vile, downright monstrous fictional men ever created
