You once saved a Crow from dying as a child. Even now that you are an adult, you still remember the Crow's words after you set it free back to its murder, "We⦠wiLL⦠RETurN⦠ThE⦠FAVorā¦"

After about a decade of slowly making friends with all the local crows in our neighborhood by feeding them peanuts when we go out walking, and putting peanuts out on our porch when theyāre watching us, about three years back a pair of crows started bringing their fledgling by our porch to get peanuts. He was nervous at first but they showed him that it was safe and led him through the steps of cautiously getting nuts. Like one of his parents (weāre using male pronouns out of laziness, we canāt actually tell the gender of any of the crows), he has a funny habit of ruffling up his feathers into a big puff-ball, something weāve really only seen this one and his parent do. We called his parent Fluffy because of this habit, so the fledgling was dubbed Fluffy Junior, often called just Junior.
Junior grew up coming by our porch for peanut treats, and following Jack and me when we go out walking. Heās easy to pick out because heās far less skittish around us than any of the other crows who come to us for treats, and because heās continued to do the fluff-ball thing. At first he came along with his parents, and then eventually just him, and then last winter he started bringing another crow along with him who was a lot more nervous around us than Junior or his parents had ever been.
Then for awhile this spring, we were only seeing Junior or his very skittish mate, never both of them together, and about two weeks back we finally found out why ā Junior has a fledgling! They brought the baby over to the rooftop thatās across from our porch and fed him there, within easy access of the porch treats. The crow weāve known since he was a baby now has a baby of his very own, and is carrying on the tradition of introducing the baby to us young.
So today we could hear Junior and his mate feeding the baby across the way ā and if youāve never heard crow fledglings being fed, itās a very distinctive noise that sounds like a crow is being loudly strangled, and if you see it in process, youāll notice that one crow has a much smaller beak that opens much wider and is bright red on the inside. When you know what to listen and look for, you can pretty easily spot fledglings being fed this time of the year, and often hear it from as much as a block away.
We want to encourage Junior to keep bringing his mate and their baby over to our place (and hopefully outlast the work-from-home era of our hateful neighbor who comes outside and claps at the birds when they make too much noise), so we put out some peanuts and a little bit of cheese for them, which is their absolute all time favorite treat.Ā
We figured Junior or his mate would get the food and continue to feed their baby on the roof like theyāve done frequently since the beginning of the month, but instead the entire family of three flew over and landed on our porch, and fed the baby right there, about four feet from our door, while Jack and I hid behind the curtains to get a look without spooking them.Ā
Thatās a show of trust that not even Juniorās parents attempted, and itās so exciting to think that this third generation of this little family will grow up that comfortable with being so close to us. Theyāre still rightfully skittish about being watched too closely, and we would never try to approach them or touch them, but it is lovely to get to see them behaving so calmly from such a close distance.
Gosh I love my crows.
Iāve just made a behavioral study on birds (aka. Iāve fed bread to pigeons and crows) and Iād like to conserve the results for posterity:
Pigeons can and will fight each other for even the smallest crumb of bread
When a pigeon picked up a bread crumb and other pigeons are nearby it will spread its wings to ensure the other pigeons canāt get close enough to steal the crumbā¢
The other , bread stealing pigeons might also spread their wings to make sure that no pigeon can steal the breadcrumb before them
They will steal it straight from another pigeons beak
Pigeons have no manners
They WILL fly at you and hover around your head once they realized youāre the one throwing the crumbs
They have no concept of personal space.
Crows on the other hand are civilized.
They will try to get to the crumb first but when another crow has reached the crumb before them they will accept this and leave them be
However if a pigeon reaches the crumb first they WILL go absolutely feral and peck the pigeon until it surrenders the crumb
Pigeons are reasonably scared of crows and wonāt try to steal crumbs from their very pointy stabby beaks
Crows will wait for you to throw the crumbs at an appropriate distance because they do have manners
Unlike pigeons they will also watch you and look right into your eyes, expectantly
If a crow looks at you , waiting, and you throw it a crumb it will try to catch it just like a dog would
Pigeons however donāt notice shit until it lies in front of their face or they see another pigeon found something
Crows understand pointing, pigeons donāt
If the crows are satisfied they will fly away
Pigeons are never satisfied and therefore will bother you until the very end (aka. Until you donāt have any bread left)
They always hunger.
In conclusion:
Feeding crows is more fun than feeding pigeons because crows know the rules of society and pigeons donāt.

"A Void" (new & improved legible edition!)
________
Thereās a void
In the trees
Calling in
the early morning
---
A black mark
against the sky
A piece of night
flying in the daylight
---
Shooting down
like stars
To take life
into its space
---
Itāll die as all does
And briefly leave a trace
---
Itās mouth
a sword
Speaking words
of the grave

In addition to art, one of the things that helps my depression is gardening and plants. I hope to get some shelves up in the kitchen for our potted plants, because right now there are 13 containers and pots cluttering the counter and they get bumped often.
In the front yard we have over 10 rose bushes and a moss garden, and I try to plant wild flowers every year.
I spent some time today clearing weeds from directly around two of the rose bushes and noticed the first two flowers of the season begining to open!
I even got to watch a few crows gather sticks for a nest this evening. This is looking to be a good season.

Seagulls are just beach pigeons and have limited grace, style, and cleverness, while on the other hand, corvids are sleek, fast, have phenomenal visual acuity, are super intelligent, and have other attributes that place them well above other birds. And a Crow (and its cousin, the Raven), will interact with humans quite nicely, although if you make an enemy of one, for whatever reason, be prepared to deal with the consequences. For a long time...
And then there are the supernatural components to a corvid, but that's a topic for another post...
