can you believe it? it’s oasis night 3 already! gonna try a similar thing as the cardiff link post last week. tumblr’s been giving me trouble updating it since sunday for final archiving (did you know tumblr has a max number of links per post? now i do!) but i think it worked well for the first 24 hours after each night.

ML: The standard view in books and profiles is that you were scarred by your childhood and you channeled that into songwriting. Is that how you see it?
NG: I wouldn’t say I was scarred, but everybody’s childhood makes them what they are.
Music was a escape for me. That three minutes was to take me to somewhere else, other than drudgery of cold Northern England in November.

i love making a little noise and i of course am now going to project that onto liam. i think its something noel would try to condition out of him when hes older and more conscious of how theyre perceived but when they were little, he could understand all of liam's little Not Word noises 😔
ever think about supersonic and noel's childhood obsession with building ww2 plane models? just imagine this kid looking at the covers of each airfix box on the shelf, daydreaming about being able to fly away from his horrors of a home, going to the library looked up each plane, and looking at diagrams showing all the different parts of the plane and learning what made each unique. saving up to buy a box, cutting out each piece from the plastic frame, and assembling it piece by piece. one piece to another piece glue and wait until it dries. don’t rush. another piece glue and dry. one by one day by day until it made a plane. then he’d revisit the library for spec photos, write down a list of colors needed to match, look at the store for the right paint and brushes. maybe he’d save up some change or maybe he figured out early how easy it was to lift. regardless that was the finishing touch the step that made all the other steps worth it. where it went from being a bunch of pieces of plastic to a real thing he could hold in his hand and show someone else. i made this. something that resembled the plane in the cover on the box. a vision made real.
and then somewhere along the line in his trips to the library he reads the word supersonic and learns what it means: going faster than the speed of sound, twice the speed of the spitfire. the speed astronauts need to leave earth and enter space. and he files that away in his head.
learning to assemble something piece by piece becomes a worthwhile skill when he starts playing guitar and quickly feels the drive to make something of his own. three chords learned and he could build a song. listen to words and phrases people say and write them down and move them around until they sound right too. piece by piece.
he does the same thing as a roadie watching the band noticing what pieces are needed to fit in to become one of them. to learn what parts are essential for a launching a band and what could be upgraded to launch a band to greater heights. all the time knowing knowing knowing that what goes up must eventually fall down. even if everything goes well five years is what you get. but then he remembers supersonic. faster than the speed of sound. maybe a band’s launch could be accelerated to supersonic speeds by making the engine more powerful and avoiding the common mistakes that contribute to drag and weigh it down. if a band’s launch is faster and reaches higher heights it can fly longer and maybe maybe have a softer fall. maybe he can build in emergency parachutes to escape when the engine inevitability catches fire and they have to bail out. maybe he can even put in fire extinguishers to put the fires out and land safely and fix what went wrong. so they could live to fight another day.
bringing his songs in for oasis to play for liam to sing must have felt a bit like that finishing step of adding the paint to the assembled model. the color added suddenly making it feel more real. closer to tasting the dream he’d only seen in magazines and heard on albums of bands long since over and done. bit by bit building the dream that was once impossible. a dream that was his first it must be said but now was shared with his little brother who had been hiding this voice that could make mountains tremble and grown men cry. sky’s no limit. you can have it all but how much do you want it? feeling supersonic it is.
