“Wha- what?” Tanaka stumbled back with wide eyes, not believing what just came out of your mouth. “You’ll go out with me?”
A smirk curved on your lips and you nodded, crossing your arms. "Yeah, I will. But only if you score at least 80 points in our English exam this week.”
Tanaka smugly smiled and puffed out his chest. “Consider it done-”
“But if not,” you said, amusement covering your features, “you’re gonna shave your head.”
The teenager visibly tensed and gulped. He eyed you briefly before clearing his throat and smiling confidently. “Deal,” he shook your hand, “I’ll pick you up at two on Saturday.”
You let out an amused chuckle and pulled your hand back, “let’s talk about this after you passed the test.”
Tanaka nodded, the smug smile never leaving his face, as you turned on your heels and walked to your class.
Your brother had asked you to help motivate Tanaka to pass his test since they needed him in an upcoming practice match; if he wouldn’t pass, he had to retake the test on the day of the match. And the team couldn’t do without the first year.
So you decided to use the painfully obvious fact that he had a crush on you to your advantage and fire him up a bit. And to make sure he really gave it his all and passed the test, you raised the point score to 80 even though he only needed 60 to actually pass. And it worked out just fine.
You slightly shook your head with a small smile as you sat down on your seat. What an idiot.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
After classes, Kiyoko and your brother approached you in the hallway, your brother with a concerned and confused look on his face.
All of the other first years in the hallway stopped for a second to look at the two second year beauties walking up to you. If there had been anyone who didn’t know that you had an older brother they did now; the two of you could be easily mistaken as twins. You had the same warm brown eyes and silver hair as him. The only thing differentiating you two was the beauty mark that only your brother had and the length of your hair. You two even had the same healing smile.
“Oh my, how come the two most beautiful beings on earth have decided to bless me with their presence today?” You put a hand on your chest and playfully bow your head to them. “Do you require my help at practice again?”
Kiyoko’s cheeks turned pink and she sent you a small smile while your brother smacked the back of your head, “I told you to stop this.”
You turned away from them and let out a cough to hide the laugh escaping your lips. Your brother had always had a teeny tiny crush on Kiyoko and you knew for a fact that she was also crushing on your brother. She had told you so a few weeks ago while the two of you were filling up the team’s water bottles.
You turned back to the two second years and cleared your throat briefly, “so then, what’s up? Don’t you have practice now?” You weren’t an official member of the volleyball club, but since you weren’t in any other club either, you agreed to occasionally help Kiyoko when she asked you to.
“You tell me,” Koshi said and crossed his arms, “why is Tanaka asking for my blessing to marry you?”
You almost dropped the papers in your hand. “He what?! Has he lost his mind entirely now?!”
Your brother let out a sigh and shook his head. You could very much imagine that he was already so done with the chaotic first year and his equally chaotic friend Nishinoya.
“Seriously though, I’m used to him obviously crushing on you but what the heck did you do to him?”
You let out an awkward chuckle and shifted your weight on your left leg. This came as a surprise. Your intention was to merely motivate the boy to study but somehow this escalated more than you expected it to. “You told me to motivate him to study.”
“Yeah exactly. To study, not to marry you.” Koshi ran a hand over his face and let out a sigh. “Well, at least he seemed overly motivated to reach his delusions.”
You let out a giggle, “yeah, he seems too delusional for his own good sometimes.”
“And you’re feeding into them,” Koshi said and flicked your forehead, “I’ll see you at home.” He passed you and Kiyoko sent you a small wave to which you grinned and waved back.
I need to get them together or else they never will, these idiots. You looked over your shoulder until they were out of sight with a soft smile. Letting out a sigh, you turned back around only to come face to face with a grinning Tanaka.
A gasp escaped your lips and you took a step back. “Jeez, you can’t just sneak up on me like that, Tanaka.”
“Call me Ryu,” he said and took the papers out of your hand with a proud smile on his face. “Now where to, (Y/N)?”
You shook your head with an amused smile. Crossing your arms, you raised an eyebrow, “idiot, these are mine, I’ll take them home.”
Pink dusted his cheeks and he gave the papers back to you, clearing his throat.
You giggled behind your back, “you’re such a dork, but thanks for wanting to help.” You passed him but looked over your shoulder before turning the corner with a smile, “don’t forget to study, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
His face lit up and he nodded eagerly, making you chuckle as you left the school building.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“(Y/N)!”
You hadn’t even completely stepped out of your classroom, when Tanaka’s loud and excited voice reached you. You stopped and waited for him to reach you.
“I passed!” He almost shoved the paper he was holding into your face, making you take a step back.
With a quickly beating heart you took the paper out of his hand and looked it over. You could almost feel your face falling but you quickly put on a proud smile. You hummed and nodded, looking up at his happy face.
It had been two weeks since the two of you made the bet and Tanaka had approached you everyday before and after classes, telling you how much he studied and what places and activities he had looked up for the date. On one hand, you found it cute when he gave you a list of over a dozen things he had scribbled down for you to choose the three best from; but on the other hand, you weren’t sure if you chose the right way to motivate him since he seemed to invest his time in other things than into studying.
But you were pleasantly surprised to say the least, not having expected him to score so high. Even if a small part of you had hoped he would.
“So, have you picked something you want to do? I’ll pick you up at two on Saturday.”
Your heart sank. Gulping, you raised the exam paper and turned it around for him to see before pointing at the score. “You see this? 77 points. You lost.”
“What?!” He stumbled back with wide eyes. He snatched the paper out of your hands, holding it in both hands as his eyes frantically scanned over the paper.
Passing students were eying you and whispering among each other. You were fully aware that it’s been like this for the last two weeks but you paid them no mind at all.
Letting out a sigh you took a step closer to Tanaka, “hey, you passed the test, that’s the most important thing. And…” you took a breath, briefly glancing at his hair before sending him a reassuring smile, “you don’t need to-”
You stopped and blinked dumbfoundedly when he ran off without saying a word. “What?” you whispered to yourself, knitting your eyebrows, watching him sped off. Your shoulders dropped. Oh come on.
Tanaka’s reaction had taken over your mind for the rest of the day and you couldn’t simply take it anymore when you heard your brother enter his room.
You practically threw the covers back and jumped off your bed, rushing to your brother’s room, barging in.
Koshi flinched and turned around in a flash. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw that it was only you. A smile formed on his lips, “Tanaka passed the test, maybe you should motivate him more often from now on.”
“Did he say anything else?”
Koshi knitted his eyebrows and slightly tilted his head to the side. “No… why?”
You let out a breath and nodded, wanting to close the door again but you stopped and smiled innocently at your brother. “Do you have his number by any chance?”
Your brother narrowed his eyes. “Why would you want his number now?”
“He seemed… off today. I just wanted to check on him,” you shook your head and lowered your voice, “nevermind, that’s stupid.” You quickly left your brother’s room with a sigh. What am I even thinking?!
Deciding to distract yourself with some reading, you climbed on your bed but no matter how many times you tried to start the page over, the words just didn’t make sense.
“What’s wrong with me out of a sudden?” A frustrated groan left your lips. Putting the book on the nightstand, you completely got under the covers and let out a deep breath.
When your pillow vibrated you quickly pulled out your phone, squinting your eyes at the brightness until you turned it down to the lowest level. A bright smile grew on your lips when you opened your brother’s text message.
XXX XXXX XXX I think he’d appreciate you checking on him more than you think ;)
Without wasting any more time other than reacting to the message with too many heart emojis than necessary, you immediately called the number.
On the third ring, you froze in your place, realization hitting you so hard that your stomach painfully tightened. Just as Tanaka picked up the call but before he could speak, you ended the call with heavy breaths, pressing the phone on your chest.
“Shit,” you whispered, putting the phone on the nightstand and rushing out of your room to get yourself a glass of water. “How was I so dumb? And I called my brother stupid,” you facepalmed, grabbing your hair into your hand.
All the times that Tanaka made a stupid joke, you found them hilarious, finding yourself still thinking about them days after he told them. Every time he approached you, butterflies filled your stomach, excited about him talking to you, even if it was a simple “good morning (Y/N)-chan”. Every time he smiled at you, your heart skipped a beat. And on top of that, even if you didn’t admit it to yourself, you were disappointed that he lost the bet.
“Did he answer?”
Your head snapped up only to see your brother’s smiling face. “I didn’t call him. Why would I call him? Why would you even think that?”
Without waiting for an answer you left a flabbergasted Koshi behind, rushing into your room, hiding under the covers from the world.
I like Tanaka Ryunosuke.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The next day, you avoided Tanaka like a pest. You decided to go to school at the last minute just to be able to walk through empty hallways as everyone was already in class. Your breaks and free periods were spent either in the bathroom or in the furthest corner in the library where no one would come by anyway.
When the bell rang, signalling the end of the day, a sigh of relief left your lips. Not until everyone had left, did you start packing your things up and leaving the classroom. You looked left and right and when no one was in sight, you hurried out of the building.
A relieved smile grew on your lips when you finally got out of the school building and you almost thought you would be successful until Kiyoko came into your sight.
The manager shot you a small smile, coming to a stop in front of you. “(Y/N)-chan, are you free?”
A brief moment of silence passed by, you hesitating whether to agree or to fake an urgent appointment. Letting out a breath, you decided on the former and nodded. Why do I have to like her that much?
“Great,” she nodded, “I could use your help with a few boxes. We need to carry them to the club room and the boys are busy.”
“Sure,” a teasing smile grew on your lips and you winked, “everything for my future sister-in-law.”
Her cheeks tinted red and she turned around quickly with you hot on her heels. Upon reaching the stairs leading to the club room, Kiyoko looked over her shoulder. “There are two boxes left in the gym,” she said and picked up one of the few boxes at the bottom of the stairs, “can you get them? I’ll take care of these here.”
You gulped, your eyes flickering to the few boxes on the floor before looking at Kiyoko who was already going up the stairs. You let out a defeated sigh and slowly made your way to the gym. Please let me fall down and break my ankle.
You immediately dismissed the thought, knowing if that really happened you would only get a lot of unwanted attention from everyone. Damn, maybe I should just make a run for it.
Upon arriving at the gym, you took a deep breath and cleared your throat silently. Nodding to yourself, you put your hand on the doorknob when you stopped in your tracks.
Someone was laughing his ass off and it definitely sounded like Nishinoya but you could also make out your brother’s confused voice. "What happened to your-"
"I lost a bet."
Your whole body tensed when Tanaka’s voice reached your ears. Gulping, you bit the inside of your cheek. Did he shave his head?!
"Why-"
"I don't want to talk about it."
You couldn’t take it anymore and curiosity got the better of you, shoving your hesitation and all the other thoughts to the back of your mind. You entered the gym and froze when you saw Tanaka. Instead of his blond hair covering his head, a buzz cut took its place instead, showing his real hair colour. Oh my, this looks so good.
All the heads snapped to you when the door shut. Heat rushed to your face and you nervously smiled. “Hi,” you slightly bowed your head, “I just wanted to get the boxes.”
Tashiro, the volleyball club’s captain, nodded and looked at Tanaka. “You were late, go and help (Y/N),” he nodded at your direction
The first year nodded and lowered his head before he took one of the two boxes that were right beside the gym’s door. You gulped and bit the inside of your cheek before quickly following his lead. You shot the captain and your brother a quick smile over your shoulder before leaving the gym.
Silence consumed the two of you for a brief moment and you couldn’t keep your mouth shut anymore.
“You really shaved your head?!” you blurted out.
Tanaka stopped in his tracks and blushed. He lowered his gaze. “I lost the bet, didn’t I?” he mumbled.
“Oh my god, you didn’t have to actually do it,” you stopped as well and looked at him with wide eyes. “I only wanted you to pass the test!”
“I know, thanks,” he said and continued his way to the club room. “I wanted to cut it anyway. Blond looks ridiculous on me and no one ever told me,” he grinned.
You slightly smiled, glad that it wasn’t as awkward between you as you expected it to be. “I think this hairstyle looks better on you,” you quietly admitted.
Tanaka immediately stopped in his tracks and looked at you with wide eyes, his face lighting up. “Really?!”
Heat rushed to your face and you looked away from him, walking ahead.
He quickly caught up to you, “so, you’ll still go out with me?”
Your heart almost leapt out of your chest when the words left your mouth without even thinking about them. “Well, you passed the test and thus the purpose of the bet,” you shrugged and gulped, “so you kinda won.”
Tanaka dropped the box on the ground. “Is that a yes?!”
You bit the inside of your cheek and slowly nodded. He immediately took the box out of your hand and almost threw it on the ground before pulling you in a hug and spinning you around.
A squeal left your lips and he let you down. “(Y/N)-chan you are the best!” He pressed your cheeks together with the palm of his hands, having your lips turn to a pout. “I love you!”
He pulled his hands away from your face and ran towards the gym, leaving you behind with a red face and the boxes still on the ground. “Oi, Tanaka!” you called after him but he was already too far away to hear you. With a smile on your face you shook your head and picked up one of the boxes. This adorable idiot.

summary: you had to attend a business dinner and decided to take your boyfriend with you. what you didn't expect was your boss and friend being mean to him.
word count: 2,835
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Are you ready?” your boyfriend asked through the door. You only quickly hummed before applying a layer of nude lip stick onto your lips. You were having dinner with your boss and a potential business partner at a fancy restaurant. Shoyo didn’t have volleyball practice that evening, making it possible for him to come as well; he usually never joined you because he was either at practice or was completely exhausted by the time he came home.
Opening the door, you smiled at Shoyo who was trying to fix his tie. Since he normally wore casual clothes, he had problems adjusting to the suit he wore. You let out a small giggle. “Let me help you.” Bringing your hands up to the tie, you managed to fix it within a few seconds. When you looked up, Shoyo was already looking at you with a soft smile. Heat rose to your cheeks but you still smiled back.
“You look beautiful,” he whispered and put a hand around your waist, pulling you closer to him. It were moments like these that made you fall in love with the orange-haired male all over again. He was rarely home and when he was, he was so tired that he directly went to bed. You tried not to be mad about it even if you were sad at times. Others always had plenty of time with their partners while you would be happy if you saw him for more than an hour straight. It was enough for you that he tried to keep you company despite almost falling asleep. You knew that he loved you - small gestures like sticking sticky notes with sweet messages around the apartment, or bringing your favourite sweets when he came home and similar things made you so sure - and that was enough to make you happy.
“Thanks, you look amazing as well,” you softly said and put a hand on his firm chest. You would have never imagined Shoyo wearing a suit on any other occasion than a wedding, but you still enjoyed the sight.
He let out a chuckle and cupped your cheek gently. Only when your eyes connected, did he slowly lean in, making yours flutter close. Warmth spread through your body when he closed the gap between the two of you. Putting your arms around his neck, your heartbeat quickened. Despite having been in a relationship for four years now, kissing him still felt like it did when you kissed for the first time.
When you parted the sweet kiss for air, Shoyo softly smiled at you before giving you another quick peck on the lips. “You might want to fix your lip stick,” he said and let out a chuckle when he saw that the colour was all gone.
“Idiot,” you playfully mumbled with a soft smile before escaping his arms to take a look at yourself in the mirror. “I told you not to kiss me after I got ready,” you said before quickly applying some lip stick again. Luckily, the rest of your make-up was not smeared. Fixing your hair quickly, you turned around only to find an innocently grinning Shoyo.
“You still liked it.” He shrugged with a smug smile. You narrowed your eyes at him slightly. Shoyo chuckled and raised his hands in surrender while your serious expression turned into a smile. You shook your head slightly and grabbed your jacket before linking your arm with his.
You looked up at him with big eyes and a soft smile. “Then, shall we go?” Shoyo nodded, not being able to look away from your sparkling eyes. He liked it when you were happy and even if he wanted to spend his free evening with you alone, he agreed to the dinner because it would make you happy; and your job was important to you, and whatever was important to you was important to him as well. You were the CEO’s assistant of the company; you and your boss were childhood friends and you did a lot to build up the company so that you were also paid more than the others despite being an assistant.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Once at the restaurant, Shoyo knew that it was a mistake to agree to the dinner- a dinner you didn’t have to attend necessarily. He had known that your boss was one of your best friends but you never told him that he was one of the most handsome people out there. And the way your boss looked and greeted you was enough for Shoyo to know that he didn’t want to be only friends.
“Tobio,” you smiled as soon as you got out of the car. Tobio had been waiting for you at the entrance and his face subtly softened when he heard your voice. You two had known each other since middle school and every time someone was mean to Tobio you would stand up for him. When you started high school, however, no one was mean anymore, mostly because puberty hit the boy and made him look very intimidating; his cold dark blue eyes, cold expression and height were the main reasons for that. He not only became intimidating but also very good looking, making the girls swoon over him from afar, too afraid to make a move. But through all that, he still stayed your little Tobio - even if he was taller than you.
“(Y/N), you look beautiful,” Tobio said and kissed the back of your hand before his eyes briefly travelled up and down your body. You had put more effort into your look today and wore a fancy dress because you exactly knew that Tobio would choose the most luxurious restaurant he would find in order to impress his potential business partner.
You giggled and playfully bowed as a thank you before hugging him briefly. “Why thank you. You look good yourself.”
Shoyo clenched his jaw and glared at Tobio eying you. If he had known earlier that your boss and friend was him, he would have spent more time with you. Now that he was there to actually see your eyes spark and your smile being directed to your friend, Shoyo had second thoughts. He wondered why you were still together with him when he was rarely home and had rarely time for you. You were an amazing person and he suddenly thought that you were better off if you were dating Tobio. The CEO could offer you more of the world and more of what you deserved while Shoyo couldn’t even offer you some time with him.
You turned around and warmly smiled at your boyfriend. Grabbing his arm, you pulled him to your side. “Shoyo, this is Tobio, my boss and friend. Tobio, this is my boyfriend Shoyo.” You introduced them to each other briefly. Your smile and genuine tone made Shoyo shrug off his second thoughts quickly and he greeted Tobio politely. The two men, despite being polite on the surface, already hated and glared at each other. You were oblivious to that at first and smiled at the two, glad that they got along so well. Shoyo put a hand around your waist, making Tobio eye his arm first before glaring at him some more. Despite being the shorter male, Shoyo wouldn’t back down and show him that you were his.
“Shall we go in?” Tobio turned to you. “Tanaka-san and his wife should be here soon.”
You nodded and while Tobio entered, you glanced at Shoyo who was following Tobio’s every move with his eyes. Raising an eyebrow, you took Shoyo’s hand. “Are you okay?”
Shoyo snapped out of his trance and quickly looked at you. He nodded briefly and forced a smile on his face. “Yeah, all right.” He didn’t want to ruin the night for you just because he didn’t like Tobio. If he does anything I might fight him though.
The couple entered the restaurant hand in hand as the waiter ushered them to a private room at the back of the restaurant where Tobio was already seated and playing on his phone. He looked up when the couple sat beside him. After a few silent moments, Tobio decided to speak up in order to get to know some things about Shoyo. “I’m sure (Y/N) already mentioned it but what did you do for a living again?”
The undermining tone didn’t go unnoticed by both of you. While you eyed Tobio with a light tilt of your head, Shoyo clenched his jaw. “I’m a volleyball player,” he briefly said, already hating how snobby Tobio was.
“Huh,” Tobio breathed out with a smirk and leaned back in his chair. The young CEO enjoyed that he would certainly be seen in a better light than Shoyo. “I hope you don’t only rely on your volleyball income. Athletes in uncommon sports don’t earn enough after all and sports is nothing you can do for too long.”
Knowing Tobio and his cold character, you linked arms with your boyfriend and smiled. “Shoyo’s an amazing player.” Your friend could come across as mean and cold at first and you didn’t want it to get awkward between him and your boyfriend.
Shoyo’s heart melted at your attempt to defend him, however, the rage he felt toward Tobio was greater. Balling his fists, he took a breath. He needed to remind himself that this was your boss and a business dinner after all and to stay calm.
Tobio briefly glanced at you. He didn’t like Shoyo being your boyfriend at all. In his opinion, you deserved way better than a simple volleyball player; you deserved the world and Shoyo couldn’t possibly offer you the best of all.
The two males glared at each other, knowing exactly how the other felt. Shoyo wanted to go back home and keep you far away from Tobio. The CEO on the other hand wanted you to see that he could offer you a better life than Shoyo ever could.
You forced a smile on her face. “If you’d excuse me,” you stood up and left for the restroom, two pairs of eyes following your every move until you were out of sight. Taking a breath, you cursed yourself. Every time you were nervous you needed to pee and despite not wanting to leave the two males alone because of the thick tension and Tobio’s tendency to make others feel small, you couldn’t hold it back. I need to hurry up or they will kill each other.
Tobio turned to Shoyo with a smug smirk. The two stayed silent for a few moments before the CEO crossed his arms and spoke up. “It sure must be hard not to be able to offer her everything she wants.”
Shoyo bit the inside of his cheek and took a breath. He was close to punching the CEO for his stupid comments. He couldn’t understand how a kind-hearted person like you would be friends with an arrogant jerk like Tobio. On top of that, the ace didn’t know why you never mentioned how he tried to hit on you or how he tried to make a move on you. She can’t be that oblivious can she? Of course she is. Shoyo shook his head slightly knowing you would interpret everything as kindness.
Tobio’s smirk widened when he saw the annoyance written on Shoyo’s face. His mission to scare your boyfriend away or to make him insecure at least seemed to work. Tobio believed that no one was worthy of dating, touching or even looking at you.
“I don’t think our relationship is any of your business,” Shoyo said, his face becoming cold. He had finally enough of Tobio and his snobby comments even though he had to admit that the CEO made him insecure. Tobio was tall, handsome, had a lot of money and a stable job; he was everything Shoyo could ever dream of.
“(Y/N) is my friend after all. I just want to be sure that she is in good hands and gets everything she deserves.” Tobio slightly raised his eyebrows and eyed Shoyo. “And you don’t seem like you can offer her any of that. You can’t even be by her side if you have practice.”
You were just about to enter the room when you heard Tobio. Your jaw dropped slightly since your friend had never been this mean to anyone in front of you before. Shoyo tensed and knitted his eyebrows but before he could stand up to punch Tobio, you entered the room.
“Tobio what the fuck!?”
The two men snapped their heads in your direction. Putting your hand on your side, you knitted your eyebrows, glaring at the black-haired male. He gulped and straightened in his seat. You couldn’t believe that he would be so disrespectful towards your boyfriend.
“(Y/N).” Tobio cleared his throat and dusted himself off. You crossed your arms and tilted your head, waiting for an explanation. “I’m only telling the truth. We all know it’s true.” He glanced at Shoyo before turning to you.
A breath of disbelief left your lips and you sarcastically smiled. “You’re kidding right?” When Tobio didn’t answer you shook your head, disappointed that your friend would be such an asshole towards your boyfriend who didn’t do anything wrong. You turned to Shoyo who was already looking at you. “Come on, we're going home.” Nodding toward the exit, you left the room, ignoring Tobio’s calls. He can handle Tanaka-san alone.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It was silent between the two of you during the ride home. Shoyo didn’t know what to say as he had never seen you this mad before. You slammed your front door shut rather harshly and threw the keys on the table. Without a word you went into the bathroom and rubbed the make-up off your face not so gently before putting on some comfortable clothes - sweatpants and one of Shoyo’s volleyball shirts - while mumbling some curses under your breath
Shoyo had been sitting on the couch, his posture stiff as everything Tobio had said ran through his head. He only snapped out of it when you sat beside him with a huff, crossing your arms. Shoyo only briefly glanced at you and after a few silent moments he gulped and turned to you.
“I can’t believe him,” you mumbled and shook your head. “He was such an asshole.” You already made a mental note to talk to Tobio about this.
Shoyo avoided looking at you and lowered his head. He sighed. “Maybe he was right,” he whispered. The ace already mentally prepared himself for the worst. It’s only gonna take a few more minutes until she realises that I’m not good enough for her.
You snapped your head up with knitted eyebrows. “What?!” You couldn’t understand why your boyfriend would even think that Tobio said anything that was true.
Shoyo looked into your warm eyes and gulped. “I can’t offer you anything worthy of you,” he quietly admitted and looked away again while gulping. “Maybe it’s better… I mean maybe you should really find someone who treats you better than me.”
Your face softened as your eyes welled up with tears. To see Shoyo sad like this broke your heart and you gently put your hand on his cheek, making him look at you. “Don’t you ever think that you’re not good enough for me,” you whispered and a tear rolled down your cheek. “I could never ask and would never even wish for anyone better than you. You are amazing and you do everything you can to make me happy. I don’t need money or the most luxurious things or vacations every year. I’m happy with you alone and just with you. Volleyball is your passion and you wouldn’t be you without it. Whatever makes you happy makes me happy as well and I know very well that if I ever called you during practice, you would immediately come if I needed you.”
Shoyo teared up as well and leaned into your soft touch. Warmth spread through his body as he looked into your eyes. The sincere tone in your voice had him relax and know that there wasn’t anything to worry about.
“Shoyo, I love you,” you whispered, “I love you so much it hurts and seeing you doubt yourself breaks my heart.”
“I love you so much (Y/N),” Shoyo whispered and glanced at your lips briefly.
You immediately closed the gap between the both of you, melting into the sweet and innocent kiss which filled you two with nothing but pure love for each other. Shoyo pulled away and put his forehead on yours while putting a hand on your cheek, softly rubbing his thumb over his. “I love you. I really do,” he whispered softly, making you smile warmly before you two spend the rest of the night watching movies together while being wrapped up in blankets and falling asleep on the couch and in each other’s arms.

summary: anything you draw/write on your own skin appears on your soulmate's. what happens when you need to cheat on your chemistry exam, and these formulas suddenly appear on Kuroo's arms who has to take the same test?

note: this is my first time posting something on tumblr and i'm still not completely sure how tumblr works, hehe. usually i post on ao3 and wattpad (under the same name) but i wanted to try it out here as well. I hope you like this oneshot :)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Are you ready for our chemistry test?”
Your best friend’s question made you stop in your tracks in the crowded hallway. A few students walked into you, complaining about you not moving and holding them up. You, however, had other concerns; the chemistry test had completely slipped your mind, despite it being the biggest test with every 3rd year having to take it. With wide eyes you looked at your friend and grabbed his arm. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner!?”
A sheepish smile grew on his lips, his warm brown eyes not looking at you. “I forgot to tell you,” he admitted with a shy chuckle, scratching the back of his neck. He knew how you were but he had been busy and forgot to remind you.
You clasped your hands over your face. “Hayate, what am I gonna do now?!” You always had problems remembering important things concerning school, mostly because you didn’t care that much about school. However, you still managed to get good grades and that’s why you kept not being bothered by it too much.
“Hey, you’ll manage,” Hayate said with a warm smile and put a hand on your shoulder. “You somehow always do,” he mumbled. He was just as clueless as you about how you managed to get good grades.
You took a breath and nodded. “Yeah you’re right,” you said and rolled up your sleeves, eying your inner arm. Hayate raised an eyebrow while you tried to estimate how much stuff you could fit on them. Chemistry was one of your strongest subjects so you only needed to write down specific details that were new to you. Looking up with a smile, you nodded. “You know, I guess I’ll really manage.”
Hayate shook his head with a smile. “Your soulmate must think you’re some loser.”
You gasped and put a hand on your chest. “Excuse me, I’m actually a genius if it wasn’t for my laziness.”
Hayate chuckled and ruffled your head lovingly. “Yeah sure, keep telling yourself that. But they sure must think you’re always cheating in school because you’re stupid.”
You pouted and crossed your arms. It was still true what Hayate said - if school stuff would appear on your arms like that you would think exactly that. But your soulmate has never written something on their arm or anywhere else before. It was mostly you who wrote on your arm; mostly for cheating on tests. “Well, they could also write something on their arm for once.”
Hayate shrugged. “Maybe they’ll finally freak out about this much advanced chemistry and write something back.”
You narrowed your eyes at him. “I don’t want them to write anything,” you huffed, making Hayate chuckle. It was quite strange that you still hadn’t heard anything from your soulmate. Normally, people would go crazy to find out more about them and most of the people already found them by the age of 16. You were now 18 and had never even written a word with them. You weren’t too obsessed with finding them and they seemed to feel the same way about it.
Hayate had also found his soulmate about a year ago. She was a sweet and kind girl in your year. You got along with her a lot and she even became one of your best friends in a year. You were happy for your best friend and even if he teased you about possibly not having a soulmate, you didn’t make the effort to find them in order to prove him wrong.
The bell snapped you out of your thoughts and you gasped. “Shit, I’ll be back in five minutes,” you called out to Hayate before running down the hall towards the lady’s restroom. You needed to scribble down a few things on your arm before the exam. The brown-haired boy chuckled and shook his head before making his way to class.

Kuroo was bouncing his knee up and down while waiting for the teacher to enter. The tense atmosphere in the classroom only contributed to his nervousness. It was unusually silent, only the clock’s ticking echoed through the room full of students.
The upcoming test was taking a toll on everyone, and despite being one of Kuroo’s favourite subjects, the chemistry test was making him nervous as well. And when he noticed black lines appearing on his arms, he tensed even more; especially when the lines formed into exactly the chemistry formulas and definitions he needed for the test. He read the things appearing on both of his arms briefly before rolling down his sleeves with shaky hands and a quickly beating heart. He didn’t want to fail the test just because his soulmate decided to go crazy about chemistry. What the fuck?
This was not the first time things about school subjects appeared on his arms. At first he thought that his soulmate was cheating themselves through their exams but somehow it didn’t make sense that they only wrote down a few specific things and not everything. Kuroo shook his head and the teacher came into the room.

A sigh left your lips when the exam was over. You didn’t get caught cheating and the notes on your arms even helped you with some answers. You packed all your things and left the classroom where Hayate was already waiting for you. When you saw him, a grin grew on your face. “I completely nailed it.”
He chuckled and shook his head, “yeah, but only because you cheated.”
“I didn’t completely cheat,” you said and crossed your arms. He raised an eyebrow, making you glare at him with narrowed eyes. You two had a staring contest until someone bumped into your shoulder. You snapped your head over to the person only to see the school’s volleyball captain. You huffed and looked away from his retreating figure. Everyone at school knew Kuroo; he was one of the popular boys everyone swooned over. You looked at Hayate, “your captain is rude.” He didn’t even apologise for bumping into you.
Hayata smiled, amusement flashing in his eyes. “He’s actually pretty nice,” he said, making you roll your eyes. “You know, everyone is kinda waiting for him to find his soulmate. The girls are freaking out over him.”
You only hummed, not really interested in the whole Kuroo situation. You had other things to think about. The girls who were obsessed over him were stupid in your eyes; there were more important things to think about. Turning to your best friend you shrugged. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Have fun at practice.” He nodded and ruffled your hair before you went separate ways.
At home, you spent the rest of the day doing nothing in particular and when you stepped out of the shower, you couldn’t believe your eyes. Tightening the towel around you, you gawked at your arm.
'I have no idea why you’re suddenly a chemistry freak, but for once your scribbling helped me in an exam today.'
“Oh my god,” you mumbled and tightly shut your eyes, cringing at all the things you have written on your arm before. “My soulmate really thinks I’m stupid.” A part of you had secretly hoped that Hayate was right and you were one of the rare cases that didn't have a soulmate.
Quickly putting on your pyjamas, you took a pen and sat on your bed. You tapped the pen against your chin while looking at the first ever message you received from your soulmate. “What am I doing?” You shook your head and were about to put the pen away and roll down your sleeve when another message appeared.
'You’re not gonna tell me what you needed the notes for?'
“Screw it,” you mumbled and opened the pen’s lid with your mouth before writing down something on your arm as well.
'I had a chemistry exam as well.'
You raised your eyebrows at the coincidence. How were the chances that you and them both had a chemistry exam on the same topics? With knitted eyebrows you watched new words appear on your skin. Could it be that we are in the same school?
'What a coincidence. So you normally cheat on your tests?'
You let out a huff and crossed your arms, considering not to answer anymore. Whoever that was seemed smug and you didn’t want to keep talking to them. Pressing your lips together, you glanced at your arm briefly. A groan escaped your lips before you scribbled on your arm.
'I normally don’t cheat, I tend to forget a lot of my exams so I only need a bit of help.'
A few minutes passed and you were still staring at your arm, waiting for an answer. But nothing came. “Whatever,” you mumbled and rolled your eyes before laying down. You closed your eyes but let out a sigh before you angrily peeked at your arm one last time. A smile crept on your face when you read the words.
'You still helped me today, thanks. Good night :)'
Scribbling down a good night as well, you went to sleep with a small smile on your face. Maybe they’re not that bad.

“Your soulmate really did write to you?” Hayate’s eyebrows shot up as he eyed you nodding your head. A sudden knowing smirk crept on his face, making you knit your eyebrows. “This is fucking amazing,” he mumbled to himself.
“Oi,” you slapped his arm, “what’s that supposed to mean?” He hid something from you and being the noisy person you were, you wanted to know on the spot. And the smug smirk didn’t mean anything good. Hayate only shrugged and whistled before going to class. With narrowed eyes you followed him to the classroom; for the rest of the day you didn’t get out of him what he was smirking about.
“You’re not gonna tell me?” You crossed your arms when you both stood in front of the school building after classes. He didn’t have practice today, so you walked home together.
Hayate smirked. “If you really want to know,” he shrugged and glanced at you with an amused expression, “Kuroo wants to find his soulmate now.”
You sweatdropped and slapped the back of his head. “Idiot, and I thought it was something important.”
He chuckled and stepped away from you. “That’s kinda important, and I know exactly who it is.” A wide smirk crept on his lips when your wide eyes snapped over to him in surprise. “I saw something written on his arm yesterday and coincidentally I saw the exact thing on someone else’s arm as well.”
“No way!” You grabbed his arm looking up at his face. “Tell me.”
Hayate pushed you away from him before walking ahead, shaking his head. “I thought you weren’t interested in him.” He laughed internally. If you only knew.
“You’re right,” you said and jogged up to your best friend, “I don’t care.” Grabbing your backpack’s straps, you bit your lip. You really wanted to know who it was and Hayate knew it. You glanced at him. “It’s Kenma, isn’t it?” It wouldn't surprise you even a bit if it was the quiet setter. You had always thought that they were too much of best friends and partners to not be soulmates.
“I won’t tell you, but maybe he’ll tell you.”
“Idiot,” you grumbled, “why should he tell me?”
Hayate only shrugged, sending you an innocent grin and a shrug. You huffed and crossed your arms, oblivious to all the hints your best friend already gave you. Just yesterday, Hayate had seen both of Kuroo’s arms in the boy’s changing room. And they were full of the notes you had taken a few minutes prior to the exam. Hayate was glad that it was someone like Kuroo that was your soulmate. The both of you were quite similar; you were good at school, mostly introverted and both of you were calm and collected people - at least if Yaku didn’t trigger Kuroo.
“You really won’t tell me, will you?” You stopped in front of your front yard and pouted slightly.
Hayate shook his head with a fond smile, happy that his friend would soon grow up. “Get some sleep, I have a feeling that tomorrow will be a great day.” He patted your head before walking to his house, leaving you standing there with crossed arms.
With knitted eyebrows you looked after him until he was out of your sight. Heaving a sigh, you got into your house and immediately went into your room to take a nap. However, a message on your arm made you stop. With knitted eyebrows and a small blush you sat on your bed.
'I want to know more about you. Are you free?'
You gulped and took a pen.
'Yes I am.'
While waiting for the answer, you quickly changed into something comfortable and got under the covers, taking a pen with you. You opened your laptop to watch a movie when new lines appeared on your arm.
'Nice, you can text me. xxx xxxx xxx'
You froze, not believing they gave you their number just like this. They may be your soulmate, but you still hesitated before saving their number on your phone. For all you knew, they could’ve just given you a random number.
Biting your lip, your fingers slowly typed hi before lingering over the send button. Shutting your eyes tightly you pressed send. When your phone vibrated, you peeked one eye open and looked at the text.
'I almost thought you wouldn't text me.'
You rolled your eyes with a small smile.
'I almost didn't but whatever.'
The both of you texted for a while and you found out that his name was Tetsuroo and he was also in 3rd year high school and even in Tokyo. He liked chemistry and was therefore interested in you after he saw all the notes. If you hadn't written all these things on your arm, he probably wouldn't have contacted you. But before you could manage to find out more about him, he ended the conversation, saying he still had something to do.
With a sigh you laid down, covering yourself with your blanket completely. "He's not that bad," you mumbled with a small smile before letting sleep take over.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
You huffed and put your chin on your palm while the teacher was going on and on about maths. You were good in the subject and already knew all of that, boring you to death. Beside you, Hayate was busy taking notes while you looked out of the window, not paying any attention.
When something appeared on your palm, you felt your heart skip a beat and waited for him to complete his sentence with a small smile.
'Hi, I’m bored out of my mind right now.'
You resisted the urge to giggle and took a pen to tell him that you’re in the same position as him and that maths was killing you.
'Well, we could continue our conversation from yesterday.'
You nodded to yourself already knowing which question you wanted to ask next. After all, you wanted to know roughly in which area he was living in.
'Which school do you go to?'
He didn’t take long to answer and when he did, your heart threatened to stop right there and then. Staring at the words nekoma high school with wide eyes, you sat up straighter. Immediately, you looked around the classroom, trying to find someone who was looking or writing on his palm. When you found no one you turned back to your own palm.
'Which class are you in?'
Your heart dropped and you jumped off your seat, scaring everyone in the room with the loud scraping sound of your chair. The teacher sent you a glare to which you quickly bowed and excused yourself. Avoiding Hayate’s questioning look, you rushed out of the classroom.
“What the fuck?” you said to yourself, leaning against the wall beside the classroom before pressing your palm on your forehead. You only knew one person in this class that was called Tetsuro and that was Kuroo.
“You don’t seem to be too happy about me.”
You looked up when his deep voice reached your ears. Kuroo stood in front of you with one hand in his pocket and a small smirk on his handsome face. Pushing yourself off the wall, you cleared your throat quickly. “I don’t know what you mean,” you trailed off, not looking at him.
A chuckle escaped his lips and he nodded to himself. “Lucky me, I got a really charming soulmate.”
“Hey, I can be charming,” you quickly defended yourself, making him laugh. Heat rose to your face and you huffed, crossing your arms. However, you couldn’t help but feel relieved. At least, a decent person was your assigned soulmate and not someone you couldn’t stand or was absolutely disgusting in character. Unbeknownst to you, a small smile crept on your lips at the realisation.
“You sure are a cutie.” Kuroo patted your head, making your face beet red. You swatted his hand away from your head, your smile falling quickly. “Well, since we found each other, I wanted to ask if you’re free on Saturday.”
Taking a breath, you slowly nodded. It would make no sense to reject the boy now. Why not give it a try. It can’t be that bad.
Kuroo smiled and nodded but before he could add something, Hayate put his arms around your and Kuroo’s shoulder, pulling you two closer to him. “Finally, you two found each other,” he grinned, “and here I thought you two oblivious people would take weeks to find each other.”
You pulled out of the group hug and slapped the back of Hayate’s head. “You knew and you didn’t tell me, idiot.”
He rubbed the spot you had hit and chuckled innocently. “Then it wouldn’t have been fun for me,” he admitted and shrugged, earning a glare from you. He smirked and looked between you and his captain, “but you already have a date.”
“No,” you quickly said, knowing exactly what your best friend was thinking, “you’re not coming as well.” Turning to Kuroo, you narrowed your eyes at the taller boy. “Don’t tell him where we’re going or he’ll deadass come.”
Kuroo chuckled and nodded while Hayate let out an offended cry and dramatically fell on his knees, clasping his chest. “The betrayal!”
With a blush you grabbed Kuroo’s arm, and dragged him away from the scene your best friend was causing. “If anyone asks, we don’t know him.”
