Hawks reaction to Dabi saying his real name though… like he’s been keeping it a secret, like he’s ashamed of his family name, like how fucking ironic it would be if Hawks admired Endeavor all this time because he took down his abusive, shithead dad - the thief called Takami...

How tragic to see these two clash - the son of the villain turned hero, and the son of a hero turned villain - one saved, one destroyed by the same person, both let down by hero society in their own ways, turned into ruthless weapons unable to save the person they both think is worth saving.

The Dabi-reveal is the true slow-burn of BNHA and I think it will be even more complex and tragic than we ever imagined….

Lets talk about “Dabi’s Dance”

As we are all caught up in the fact that yes, Dabi is actually a Todoroki, and the dialogue of the reveal is so so glorious, I wanted to take a moment to look at what Dabi is doing while he’s speaking.

One thing to consider when looking at Dabi during this scene is what his emotional behavior is. 

There’s three kinds of ways you can see it in my view: a production of calculated acting, hysterical elation at finally revealing endeavor’s abuses and sins, or a level of true unhinged-ness. To clarify, when I talk about a ‘production’ of acting, I’m not taking about the video reveal, I’m talking about Dabi’s behavior in the here and now, in front of Endeavor and Shouto. There’s most likely elements of all of them, but I think the primary one we see is the second, hysterical elation. Based on his entire character arc so far, I don’t see the kind of madness that I would say Toga has been shown to have in his actions, and it has been very obvious in the rest of the war arc that this was a calculated move, not done on an emotional whim.

This moment speaks for itself in terms of shock value, but I think what makes it so poignant and so powerful is how raw it is. Looking at Dabi with this idea of hysterical elation, he is so overwhelmed with ecstasy that he cannot stop his body from moving to the music of the carnage he creates. It’s something so carnal it makes the moment sing.

It is, if you will, a moment when Dabi is dancing on the grave of his fathers reputation and the ashes of hero society.

And this moment right here? It’s a bow, a moment of gratitude to Endeavor, for sitting and watching as Dabi makes the world burn. 

Okay, but getting serious for a moment:

I know I’ve given you protest instructions and advice before.

And I’ve said this before:

LISTEN TO YOUR PROTEST LEADERS. 

I cannot overemphasize that. The last protest I was at, a man pulled out a gun, an actual gun, and while I don’t think we were ever in any danger, the leader gave everyone an earful about antagonizing and escalation once we’d marched a safe distance down the street. At the end, they told us sternly that they knew how long it would take for someone to actually get to the point of shooting people, and that they could judge that because of their life experience. Odds are that your local protest leaders will have similar experience and awareness, and when it comes to that, it can literally mean the difference between life and death. 

So if you do choose to protest or march this week, you. Listen. To. Your. Leaders. You move as a unit. You stay safe. You take care of yourself and then you take care of the person next to you. 

Pack water. Pack illumination. Pack light. And study up on basic first aid, too.

Fortune favors the prepared.
