NRMT Canon Divergent AU

Phoenix Wright meets Dahlia Hawthorne in the basement of a district court library.

It has to be fate: she gives him a necklace and in one moment to the next, he falls in love. It’s typical boy-meets-girl-who-tries-to-get-him-convicted of murder.

Alas, this last point does stick a wrench in his fairytale. The glass in his stomach—literal, this time—weighs heavy in his gut and he questions the reality he thought he knew.

Phoenix wove a woman into his life, knew her favorite snacks in between classes, the little wiggle of her nose when she got upset, and the snicker she let out when he told a terrible pun. To untangle her from his memories is—fine. It’s fine. The worst of it is over, at least. All he must deal with are the remnants.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to him. He has never quite been the type to let go. Larry Butz switched his affections with his moods, but Phoenix never understood.

When someone affected his life, when he fell for them, he didn’t want to let them leave. He did everything in his power to allow them to stay. This, of course, includes the one he spent most of his life chasing: Miles Edgeworth.

Writing letters, changing his degree, it all circled a desire to find him, to return to him the friend from so long ago. And yet, Phoenix wonders, for the first time, if Miles doesn’t want to be saved; if Phoenix, truly, is simply unable to forget the person he once knew.

It’s this that makes Phoenix request a degree course change for a second time; he signs away a path and convinces himself that this is what he should do, what he ought to do.

He hopes, still, he has no regrets.

AU where Phoenix decides NOT to pursue law because hey, the Dahlia case puts his life into perspective (i.e. making it all about One Person—not recommended).

Other notes: Mia Fey lives and takes on the defense in Phoenix’s canon cases, narumitsu do meet but in different circumstances, and Phoenix figures out how to build sustainable connections!!!!

I’m actually really proud of myself for making the Telephone Game into a fic and art event… my narumitsu love is unmatched and I can’t wait to see how it turns out

the thing I love about narumitsu is that you can decide when they get together and it automatically makes sense. Childhood friends to lovers? Let me show you all the No DL-6 AUs. Bratfeen years? Intense gay panic for Miles, in-love-at-first-sight Feenie. Post Trilogy? The back and forth between together and not is so great for exes to lovers,,, plus FORGIVENESS!!! 7 year gap? Miles finally gets his shit together and marries the man and adopts their child. Second trilogy? yeah, the dad look is great on them.

“Get up, Mr. Naruhodou!”

Ryuunosuke blinks and he’s conscious. Awake. 

This was not a part of his plans. He spent a whole morning at the Old Bailey and he’s a little tired, thank you very much. He passed out on the 221B Baker Street Apartment couch, and he’d like to return to his much needed rest. “Now, Mr. Naruhodou.” Sholmes says, with his usual sly voice. “I don’t like being ignored. As it has been a few minutes, I will ask Iris to hit you with her latest invention if you don’t wake up.”

Ryuunosuke shoots up into a sitting position. “The water gun?” Sholmes nods and crosses his arms. “The very same.” 

Ryuunosuke blinks, eyes shifting to locate Iris’ hiding spot. “Am I safe?”

“For now.” Sholmes laughs, hands spread wide. “Mr. Naruhodou. Wouldn’t you like to guess why I have disturbed you from a peaceful rest?”

“Sure.” Ryuunosuke rubs his eyes. “Did Iris make dinner?”

Sholmes tips his hat with a flick of his finger. “You’re on the right track!” And it’s then that Ryuunosuke smells the pleasant notes of pheasant wafting from the kitchen. He’s starting to get a clearer picture. “But not just any dinner! We have an important occasion to celebrate.” “And you want me to figure out what it is.” Ryuunosuke smirks. He pushes up the band on his sleeve. “I think this calls for a famous deduction.”

“A dance of deduction, one might say,” Sholmes says. His eyes alight with mischief. “Shall we begin?”

They cross the room, back and forth, around each other in a practiced dance, dragging soled toes across the floor, twirling around with spotlights that mark their path. It’s a language Ryuunosuke likes to speak, of motion made conversation and interesting revelations.

As they near the end of the melody, all of the lights go out. Sholmes barks out a “hey, where did our lights go! It’s too early!”

From the darkness: “That’s if the mystery hasn’t already been solved.”

The lamps flicker to life. In their arrival stands a group of people who all shout: “Happy Birthday, Sholmes!”

Sholmes eyes widen. In the next second, he tilts his head down. “I see.” He turns to a smug Ryuunosuke, standing beside a smiling Susato and a not-so-smiley Kazuma that hold a cake between them. Iris and Gina and his partner, Mikotoba, are scattered around them. “So you knew this whole time, Mr. Naruhodou?”

“Iris has been planning with Professor Mikotoba for weeks.” Ryuunosuke laughs. “Of course we had to outmaneuver the great detective on his birthday!”

“Sorry, Daddy, it was necessary.” Iris winks, not at all apologetic. “But the secrecy was worth it to see tears in your eyes!”

“There are none!” Sholmes glares at the ground, tilting his hat further. “It’s just a trick of the light!”

“Oh, Herlock.” Yuujin chuckles. He moves around the group to capture him in a hug. “It’s okay to be sentimental.”

And then Sholmes is tackled by Iris and Susato forces Kazuma to put the cake down so she can join in and Ryuunosuke thinks “what the hell!”, grabs Gina and Kazuma to hold the greatest family in the world in his arms. 

Sholmes murmurs a quiet, “I think you’re right, Yuujin.” The warmth in his tone seeps into Ryuunosuke’s belly.

He’s sure it does for everyone else, too.

Ryuunosuke enjoys his morning routine. His reputation—in untangling the snarled threads of lies to find the illuminating truth—has made him quite busy, and sorting through the mess involves great mental energy. His routine provides him a clean grasp of reality, a firm reset to the day, and allows him to go through the motions of the world while freeing his mind to rest.

It’s on one of these early mornings, when he hears a muffled “thump” of weight settling outside his front door.

oh shit… are we in love?

Realizing he’s in love with Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix Wright decides to do what he does best: bluff his way through it.

It’s okay to be in love with your childhood best friend-turned-enemy-turned-rival-turned-best-friend, Phoenix thinks. As long as he never knows.

But there’s not much for Phoenix to do. If he changes his behaviors too much, Miles will know and the whole purpose of keeping his feelings a secret will prove moot.

So Phoenix still touches Miles casually, eats dinners with him, solves cases with him.

The only difference is that he shoves this temporary box of “knowledge and realizations” to the side, unlike in court, where he’d blurt them out as soon as he discovered them.

It would have gone fine. Really, it would. If Phoenix didn’t have a giant mouth that sucked at shutting up.

He’s sitting on the agency’s rundown couch with Miles, parsing through case files while they sip his expensive tea in Phoenix’s paper cups. It’s a quiet moment, silent except for the turning of pages and sipping of tea—its comfort tricks him into speaking the thought that pops into his mind:

“Are we in love?”

If Miles were the type to be surprised, he may have spilt his drink. As it were, as Phoenix’s eyes grow wide in horror, Miles coughs and places his cup down, the only sign he is ruffled the slight shake of the liquid.

“Does that question warrant an answer, Wright?”

Phoenix responds: “I don’t know.”

Miles takes a different approach. “Are you in love with me?”

“Uhhhh.” Phoenix knows he sounds dumb, but like always, he is powerless to stop it. “I mean, yeah?”

“Oh.” Miles coughs again. “How long?”

With the truth released and no rescinding of their friendship, Phoenix relaxes, if only slightly. “I don’t know.” His eyebrows scrunch. “I must have been at least a little obsessed to chase you this far.”

“And then?”

Phoenix wonders if he’s imagining the hope in his voice.

“And then…I guess I was in a position to keep falling.”

Miles’ voice is small as he says: “even knowing what I’ve done?”

Phoenix’s lips upturn at the edges. “Even knowing that.” He lets his gaze sharpen. “It would have been harder to stop than to keep going with it.”

Miles exhales. He picks up his tea. Takes a sip.

“I see.”

Phoenix waits. And waits. And waits. And then he pushes.

“And you?”

Miles chuckles and Phoenix’s heart thumps. “I don’t let anyone else drink this tea.”

“Really?”

“It’s my favorite,” Miles says.

And with that, Phoenix doesn’t need another answer.

He picks up his case files. “If we finish this case, can I take you out on a date?”

Miles laughs, this one full and bright, a sound meant to be heard. “If we have time.”

They don’t. But in the following days, they spend enough time together that it doesn’t matter.

If his hair is tousled, it’s because Izuku ran his hands through it, grinning cheekily as he teases Shouto with light words. If his lips are puffy, it’s because Izuku spent the afternoon kissing him, nipping at his lips and whispering over and over how much he loves him. If he has a speck of food on his cheek, Izuku will lean forward with his thumb and wipe it off for him…

Being messy means being loved, and Shouto finds he likes it that way.

Tobio lies on the pavement, the breath lost from his lungs. He stares up at the sky, the sun blinding his eyes.

Or, he thought it was the sun.

It turns out to be a short redheaded boy who is screaming at him, which is not much different.

The String of Fate

This week, we’re focusing on the theme and origin of our zine: the red string of fate! 

The String of Fate revolves around a common belief in East Asian mythology: that two souls are tied together with a red string, and the person at the other end is their true love. The string is usually invisible, but some souls are lucky enough to be granted the chance to see the string. There are many variants on these strings in fanfiction, like having platonic soulmates or not having a string and still finding a life partner.

Our opinion of this AU

Mod Lie and I (Mod Anna) had a lot of fun when crafting the name of this zine. We spent many hours throwing around words about souls being bound together in many different universes, having “Linked Fates” or “Chained Destinies”… a few hours were spent just yelling “Fated Links? Fates? Fated? Links? Linking of the Fates that Are Fated to Be Linked!” XD 

When we talked about the string of fate, everything clicked together, talking about the “threads” that tie people together. Funny how we discovered the fate of the zine by talking about the string of fate :)

We wanted to portray TDDK in many different universes, and have sweet and special meetings that draw them together. The “serendipity” is in how Shouto and Izuku are always in the perfect place and time, to find each other, again, no matter which universe they’re in. Maybe there are no destined soulmates in the AU, but for some reason, the stars continue to align, and they want to come back to each other.

Fate is fickle and always ready to trip you up. But sometimes, it can work out in your favor, the “threads” pulling you in the right direction. What is your favorite part about tied destinies?
