Shinkane Week Day 4

I love how it’s essentially canon that Kougami’s the only one who tolerates and likes her cooking.

Prompt: Sweetness

“I’m so grateful you’re taking care of the house, Acchan. But I do feel bad that you won’t be with your friends during your summer break.”

Akane moved the phone to her other hand as she took off her shoes. “It’s okay, Kaori’s busy with her internship and Yuki’s going to be overseas. Just focus on getting better, Obaa-chan.”

“Yes. Oh, and don’t forget to leave some wagashi on the front porch.”

“Eh? What for?”

“For the youkai, of course!”

She wryly smiled. “Obaa-chan, you still believe in that superstition?”

“It doesn’t hurt. And I still haven’t forgotten how you survived falling in the river, when you couldn’t swim. Something must have rescued you.”

“That was a long time ago. Your accident was much more recent.”

“Well, my injuries could have been worse. The nurse is here, so I have to hang up. Good night, Acchan.”

“Good night.”

She finished unpacking first, assuming there’d be mochi or konpeito lying around. However, she was soon proven wrong. She looked in the refrigerator, then the cupboards, with growing concern. How strange, there weren’t any sweets left. Well, she could probably make some instead. Obaa-chan had plenty of cookbooks, and she was good at following instructions. She rolled up her sleeves and set to work.

“Finished it off again, huh?” She couldn’t help smiling as she looked at the empty plate on the porch. Over the past week, she had made yokan, leaving a handful of cubes out every night. And every morning, they were gone. She assumed some animal must have eaten them, but she was growing fond of whatever it was. It had a good appetite; nothing was left behind.

As she was hanging the laundry out to dry, she noticed something strange. A misshapen indent in the ground. Drawing closer, she slowly realized it was a footprint.

It looks like a dog’s, but it’s very big. If one paw is bigger than my hands…

Aware that she was alone in the countryside, she desperately looked around. Dense foliage met her gaze. But…other than the footprint, there were no other signs of a large creature. Perhaps, it was a youkai. Akane pressed her lips together and tried not to laugh at herself. She was being silly for even entertaining such a thought.

Nevertheless, she decided to switch it up.

In the middle of the night, Akane woke to a dry throat. She poured herself a glass of water in the kitchen and for some reason, she thought of checking the plate of dango. Groggily, she made her way through the dark house and opened the door to the porch.

What she saw instantly dispelled her sleepiness. In the yard, a weasel was lying belly up, pink tongue lolling out. A fox urgently patted its face.

But Akane was drawn to the figure sitting on the porch. He was strikingly handsome in the moonlight. One hand held a half-eaten skewer, and sharp teeth gleamed as he bit into the syrupy dumplings. A fluffy black tail swished in the air, brushing the fabric of his dark gray kimono.

Lily's Orabeoni was a good person.

It doesn't matter how many people call him bad names, he is a good person.

Besides, what do they know? They don't know how he held her when she was small, they don't know how he would comfort and read to her whenever she couldn't sleep, how he would leave her little gifts whenever she was feeling sad. They don't know anything.

Her eldest brother was a good person.

Basen didn't believe her when she told him how kind big brother was.

When she overhears some kids bad-mouthing her brother at mother's party, her blood boils. She runs and tackles the moron.

"Shut Up! You don't know what you're talking about!"

"Ack- Get off of me!"

The boy throws a punch and it hits but it's okay because she hits back. They get into a fistfight and her mom grounds her but it's okay because Cale is there and he understands.

('She's there under her covers, frustrated tears blurring her vision. They don't understand. That kid was talking bad about her big brother! She hears her door open and close, there's a dip at the end of her bed and Cale asks what happened. She tells him everything, because if anyone would understand, it would be Cale.

He tells her that she shouldn't have done that and that it doesn't matter if they talk bad about him but it does matter. It matters to her. And he comforts her like she knew he would and it feels like everything is going to be okay')

She is going to be a knight. Her Orabeoni has shown her how to protect with words, now she will learn with a sword.

Lily dyes her hair. Just a single streak of red to match her brother.

When she shows her older brother, she tells him with a smile 'Look, look! Now we match! ' When he gives her a hug, she pretends not to notice the slowly growing wet spot on her shoulders.

Basen... is jealous.

He's denied it for a long time but watching his big brother teach his little sister how to make flower crowns while she watches with her eyes shining in excitement- he is jealous.

Cale is his brother (does Cale think that?)

Cale is his big brother but he's never- he's always been distant. Like Lily, Basen is sure that Cale is a good person. He knows how Cale sacrificed his reputation for him and his mother, he had a front row seat. How could he not know? When the adults confronted him, Cale pretend that he threw the vase just to be mean-

Is it childish that he also wants to feel the warmth of his big brother that Lily talks so much about?

Basen, on impulse, takes some basic problems that he'd already solved from his tutor and knocks on Cale's door.

By the time the door opens he's about ready to walk away-

"What do you want?"

Cale doesn't say it like he's upset, just tired. Basen tries and fails to suppress a flinch.

"C-can you help me with some problems I'm having trouble with?"

There's a short pause. His palms are sweaty.

"Sure." 'huh-?' "Get in."

Cale opens the door wider while Basen stays still like an idiot.

Cale moves to sitting on his couch, waiting.

"Well?"

"R-right!"

Basen is nervous and excited at the same time. Is it really that easy?

Cale spends a while explaining each question, doesn't once mock him, and right now? He oddly feels- Happy.

When they're done and move to get up, Cale ruffles his hair affectionately and they both freeze.

"Oh- Sorr-"

"No no! It's fine-"

They both leave the room in opposite directions (it was a bit awkward) and Basen has never felt lighter.

He heads towards Lily's room and reluctantly admits that "yes, his headpats do feel nice- you win"

After this, Basen also understands the anger lily feels whenever he hears servants talk badly about his brother. And he has a scary realization that Cale hears this all of the time.

[The next time Cale and Lily go to the gardens to play with the flowers, they invite Basen and there he learns that people really don't know anything about Cale. Even their parents.

Basen can see the soft smiles directed at him and Lily, the patience he has when they make a small mistake, and there he feels happy]

Deruth is confused.

Lily has taken up a rebellious streak, seemingly starting fights with other children for no reason. The first time this happened, He asked lily why she hit the kid first and when Lily spoke, she teared up a bit and spoke, anger still present in her voice.

"He was saying stupid things."

Violian was shocked and so was Deruth.

They grounded Lily for the first time and both had a talk after. Deruth didn't want to admit it, but the possibility of Cale influencing her was high. Lily was still very young.

When Deruth asked Basen about this, he looked at Deruth in disbelief.

"..Are you sure?"

"I'm not saying anything is certain, just a possibility. Lily is still young."

"I... suppose so.."

(Later Basen would come into his office and take back those words.)

Deruth had just finished the paperwork for the day and went on a walk in a garden. There he found two of his children making flower crowns on a blanket and the oldest guiding them. They obviously hadn't seen him yet and Deruth paused for a moment. Cale was... smiling. That smile that he got so many compliments on, that everyone said could light up a room.

'when was the last time I've seen that smile...?'

Deruth felt his heart lighten and decided to walk up to them.

"I see you all are having fun."

"Father!"

"Hello"

Cale stopped smiling and looked tense.

"...Hello father."

Lily, noticing the awkwardness, quickly said something.

"Cale's teaching us how to make flower crowns!"

After a bit of small talk between the three (Cale staying silent), His oldest got up and placed two identical, well made flower crowns on Lily and Basen's heads.

"I just remembered I have a bit of work to do, you guys have fun"

And with a couple of headpats, Cale began to speed walk away.

"Ah- And there he goes.." Lily was pouting.

"... I think you should have told him to stay." Basen also seemed upset.

Deruth just looked helplessly towards the direction Cale walked off to. An unfinished flower crown left where he was sitting.

(The next day before breakfast, Basen handed him the flower crown from before and told him to give it to Cale during breakfast.

Contrary to Deruth's belief, Cale did show up

Near the end of breakfast, Deruth got up at the same time as Cale and nervously walked towards him. The table was silent, seemingly waiting.

Deruth held out the flower crown.

"You forgot this yesterday"

A pause, Deruth got even more nervous.

Cale hesitantly took the crown.

"..Thank you."

When Cale left, Deruth let out a shakey exhale. Lily was excited.

"Did you see his ears!?! He was happy!"

Later on, Deruth would get a report from Hans stating the usual but with a comment from Hans that would also make Deruth happy.

"The Young Master was seen wearing a flower crown all day! It was very odd.")

Yoosung

The first time that he met your mother, didn’t know what to do with himself. She fawned over him and made sure that he had not only eaten but that the two of you were set for food for the rest of the week. She’s a very caring woman, obviously, but he’s never had someone so wildly and shamelessly dote on him like that with a gentle approach. It reminds him of his Mom but normally she’s scolding him rather than coddling him. So, it sort of makes him red-faced but in a good way.

Your mom dotes on him a lot. He is a little embarrassed by it but it feels nice to have someone check up on you guys sometimes. He likes chatting with her about this and that. Sometimes they share a lot about you or different little recipes that they are work on.

Zen

He was really nervous about meeting your mother for the first time. He wanted to make a good impression and he wanted to ensure that he stole her heart as she was important to you and that made her just as important to him. Well, he didn’t expect her to blow him out of the water by immediately hugging him out of the blue and thanking him for treating you so well. She goes further to say how proud she is of him and how she commends him for his dedication to his skill and craft. 

She’s got a lot of life advice and stern words for parents that treat their children the way that Zen’s parents treated him. By all accounts, your mom basically dotes on him as much as she does with you. Hanging up achievements and different awards he’s gotten around the house, and letting him feel welcome into the family.

Jaehee

She can’t remember what the warmth of her mother’s own affection was like because she was so young when she lost them and moved in with her aunt and uncle. So, she is a little nervous about meeting with your mother but takes it well. Jaehee is taken back when your mother compliments the cafe and the decor, as well as the roast she brewed for this meeting. Your mom makes no error in letting Jaehee know how proud she is of her for finding a dream passion and following it through. 

She loves talking to your mom about her life and her experiences throughout work and such. It seems to be something that sticks and Jaehee admires and respects having the ability to talk to someone that empathizes with what she’s dealt with. She likes being around your mother. 

Jumin

He can’t recall if he’s ever had a good experience with his mom or any older woman in general but still, Jumin Han is always on his best behavior and he wants to make a good impression on your mother. She’s important to you, and thus, important to him. Family is key with Jumin. He wouldn’t even be able to pull out his pleasantries before your mom starts to dote on him with a smile, thanking him for taking care of you all this time. She makes no point of hiding how crafty he must be to have his position. 

Jumin admires your mother and her commitment to be a single parent. It is not easy and talking with her makes him want to look into more programs that can help families that are in need like that. Jumin, always thinking of others, your mom notes with a sigh. 

Seven

Seven does not have a lot of good feelings about parents. You can’t blame him for that but he wants to love your family. He wants to know your mom because you talk about her often and how much she means to you. He is really scared of making a bad impression, so much so that he will try to not be himself around her at first and just pretend to be straightforward. Your mom calls him out on that because he’s so stiff and she already knows that he’s a generous, kind, and funny man. She just takes her hands in his and smiles, thanking him for being so kind to you. 

Seven learns what it feels like to have a real mother that cares about him and sometimes he can’t stop himself from crying because she’s just so kind to him. She’s a lot like you, and it hits him harder knowing that. He feels right at home with your mom. She is kind, gentle, and makes sure that he’s eating right. It just feels nice. 

V

Sort of like Jumin. He knows how to behave himself and he knows that he can talk to anyone but this isn’t just anyone. His nerves wrack up into the hundreds when he realizes that he’ll be meeting that person that means a lot to you. He is good about smiling and being curt but he’s a little quiet because he does not know what to say. He wants to thank her for bringing you into the world but that is so forward! Your mom just melts and dotes on him anyway, smiling and letting him know how much she’s heard about him and how proud she is of him for working on himself. 

Being with a mom like this... reminds V of how much he misses his mom, he does spend some time talking to your mom about that grief and loss because it has been such a while since he felt like he could talk about it. He enjoys having her perspective on the world and on art. She’s so kind to him.

Saeran

Somehow more frightened than any of the aforementioned people on this list and then some. Women is a touchy subject. Well, no, maternal figures are not something that he has a good history with. He knows that your mother is not like them but he’s fearful that your mom will realize that you’re dating a broken man and disapprove of the relationship. His heart is beating out of his chest even as he remembers his manners. Your mom is empathetic and understanding of his woes. She is sincere and gentle with him, letting him know up front that she very much does approve of the relationship, and she’s glad that you have such a sweet man around. 

God, he might break down and cry the minute your mother leaves because he has never had such a positive experience with a parent. She is understanding and so much like you, no wonder you were so kind. You got it honest. Saeran spends a lot of time helping her bake and cook and just talking about shared interests. He feels... at home.
