I performed my first ever CPR on a dummy this week! *u* I couldn’t stop grinning during the lecture and demo; I never expected I’d be putting to good use my research for this part in my WIP (which was based from this prompt list) one year later. XD Since I’m not sure I’ll ever finish it, might as well post this draft to commemorate a successful CPR return demo~

11. With a shuddering gasp

It’ll be fine, Mai.

“…Twenty-six. Twenty-seven. Twenty-eight. Twenty-nine. Thirty.”

You trained for this. Got certified specifically for this.

Head tilt-chin lift.

And the ambulance is en route.

Rescue breathing: first rescue breath. Naru’s chest rose. Second rescue breath.

“One. Two. Three. Four. Five. I threw a wish in the well. Don’t ask me I’ll never tell…” Mai hummed to keep the beat. “…Twenty-six. Twenty-seven. Twenty-eight. Twenty-nine. Thirty.”

Head tilt-chin lift.

First rescue breath. Second rescue breath.

She maintained the pacing, cycle after cycle.

Back when she was training to get certified for occupational first aid, her trainers had enumerated only three valid reasons to stop CPR: when the ambulance arrives, when the person wakes up, or when the first responder can no longer continue.

Mai heavily banked on either of the first two options because the third one was absolutely not an option right now.

Twenty-six. Twenty-seven. Twenty-eight. Twenty-nine. Thirty.

Head tilt-chin lift.

First rescue breath. Second rescue breath.

Naru had always had the perfect timing when fainting from using his PK on his own. Like during Chiaki-senpai’s case. Or the Yoshimi case. This time, his body—his heart and lungs, to be specific—chose to stop working in a traditional house on the outskirts of Kyoto. Unequipped with an automated external defibrillator. In the middle of rush hour.

Though she wanted to cry her frustration out, she’d really rather use that energy to revive. This. Idiot. Twenty-nine. Thirty.

And once he was revived…

What then?

Head tilt-chin lift.

First rescue breath. Second rescue breath.

Naru let out a shuddering gasp.

Everyone released the collective breath they’d been holding. While Lin-san kept Naru reclined on his side and Mai monitored him, the rest of SPR burst into action: Ayako called the nearest hospital for updates on the ambulance; Bou-san and John concluded the investigation; Masako and Yasu updated the clients of Naru’s status.

Mai observed him. His chest rose and fell in erratic rhythm, and his pulse tapped weakly against her finger. But a breath and a pulse—those were all she needed to be assured of his survival.

Adrenaline released its hold on her, and she allowed herself to slump sideward in exhaustion.

Lin-san started. “Taniyama-san!”

“I’m fine, Lin-san,” she said, her attention never straying from Naru. He was just a few inches from her now. So close.

As she stared at his pallid face, the silent question returned: Once Naru revived, what would she do?

His eyes fluttered open and gradually focused on hers.

“Naru.”

Once he revived…

I’ll spend the rest of my life by his side, even if that meant being his assistant forever.

She held his gaze, unheeding of the crescendo of sirens announcing the ambulance’s arrival.

Even if she couldn’t take his breath away, she damn well could return it to him.

In the manga it was just mentioned in passing that Naru and the others built a barricade of furniture in front of the full-length mirror, but in the novel they actually used the monitors from the base, too. So it got me wondering if Naru will worry about his monitors when it's time to start cleaning/packing up XD

"Well then," Matsuzaki-san said, "what will we do with those?" She pointed at the heap of broken monitors by the full-length mirror.

By now most of the furniture used for the barricade had been returned to their proper places, and the chaos in the Agawas' residence had begun to wind down. All that remained to be organized were SPR's equipment. Half of it stayed miraculously safe within the base, while the other half was pushed to an unobstructive corner of the corridor.

"I don't mind cleaning up, but man..." Bou-san shook his head regretfully. "It kinda hurts seeing these high-quality monitors destroyed." He turned to Noll, who was leaning by the wall and overseeing the cleanup. "Sensei, are these insured?"

Noll shrugged. "They’re not so expensive as to qualify for insurance."

Mai interjected with a sideward tilt of her head, "But didn’t we use all of our monitors? Even if one monitor isn't expensive, wouldn’t twenty actually cost a lot?"

That gave him pause. She had a point.

"And didn't we upgrade to these monitors just before you went home?" she added. "Wouldn’t you get in trouble with SPR?" He saw the first signs of worry lining her face, and he couldn’t help frowning, too.

Again, she was correct.

While Noll had been fortunate enough to be awarded a research grant by the Londenberg Foundation, his balance was unfortunately not unlimited. Asking for more money as soon as he arrived in Japan and a mere few months after being given a generous special grant didn't seem feasible.

However, a potentially fatal situation called for emergency measures. Surely he could appeal to both reason and sympathy when he begged.

Slightly relieved by his conclusion, he replied, "Don't worry about it."

"Hah. You're awfully confident, aren't you?"

"I'm the most valuable asset of SPR, after all." Rather than a reply, it was more of a reminder to himself.

His team stared at him with thunderstruck expressions. Now that they'd uncovered his identity, they were also aware of his credentials. They wouldn't be able to refute him.

He smirked, even as he scrambled for a plan to report this to SPR in a way that would generate funds instead of reprimands.

This was in Naru's pov, but without his reasoning behind his replies everyone would be like

Mai, devastated: 'Y-You—! You narcissist!'

Bou-san, resigned: '...It's true and he has the right to say that... I guess...'

Ayako, blasé: 'What a narcissist.'

Masako, frsutrated: 'Why do I like this guy?!'

John, troubled: 'Shibuya-san...'

Lin, already suffering because he knows he'll be handling the paperwork: '...'

Anyway, what do you think? Will Naru worry about the monitors or is he too valuable an asset to care? Lmao!

Hello, 2010 called and it wants its anime EDs back. 

I absolutely adore the first Durarara ED and I knew I needed to parody it at least once in my life. And here it is!!

Anyway,

Inspired by Akatsuki no Yona, imagine if, Cale,  at his weakest point about to pass out, and the White Star ready to aim a death blow to him, Cale's ancient powers just releases themselves, taking in a physical form to protect him.

A familiar silver shield surfaced, deflecting the sword from the White Star. "Hmm?"

"You–"  a voice called from behind the shield.

'That can't be right. Cale Henituse fainted. So how–'

The voice did not sound like Cale. In fact, it was a woman's voice.

"What...are those?" Rosalyn muttered from the side, seeing the coloured figures forming– arising from Cale's body like souls leaving a possessed individual.

The smoke cleared out and they saw a woman holding the silver shield, standing protectively over their commander.

"You thought I'd let you do that?"

The woman spoke, her eyes bored into the White Star as if daring the individual to take a step further.

"Who—!"  The White Star began, surprised. He slammed down again without another thought but a water spear blocked the attack from falling on the individual with the wood attribute.

"You XXX son of XXX! I'll rip your head off if you try to hurt our Cale again!" A strong woman  waving a water spear like she wanted to charge at him. "Forget it! I'll XXXX you for injuring him like this!" 

"Now, now calm down. If you take everything down, there won't be anything for me left." A young man smirked as he took a step forward, guarding Cale's right side.  Red sparks appeared on his hand, no, they were the colour of rose-gold, similar to their young master's.

"Cale, are you alright?" An old man knelted by the side of the fallen commander, placing his hand on Cale's shoulder. "Hey, have you healed him yet? Do it properly."

"I..I'm trying..."

"Cough. " Cale coughed out a batch of blood, slowly raising his head. "...What? You guys...?"

"Careful," A gentle hand tilted his chin slightly,  small gust of wind breezed through to give him some air to breathe. "Your body is still recovering."

"What is this? Who are you people?" The White Star looked incredulously at the six people standing around Cale as if they were protecting him.

"No way." The corners of his lips twitched. He opened his mouth to say the next line that threw everyone off.

"Ancient powers?"

"Cale...really talks to his ancient powers?" Bud mumbled lowly, the blue aura around his sword fluctuated as his hands shook.

"Ho. I've never seen anything like this in my 1000 years of life."
