This Was Supposed To Be A Quick Sketch Before Bed But Then My Brain Was Like: “Don’t Be Shy, Put

This was supposed to be a quick sketch before bed but then my brain was like: “Don’t be shy, put some more!” …and now I am even more sleep deprived than usual.

It makes me really sad that the quality of the gif is so bad but oh well, there’s nothing I can do about it

All-Star Moments in Space Communications and Navigation

How do we get information from missions exploring the cosmos back to humans on Earth? Our space communications and navigation networks – the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network – bring back science and exploration data daily.

Here are a few of our favorite moments from 2024.

An image of the plaque presented to Missy Elliott. The background is blue and has a black box in it. The black box is outlined in white. Within the black box is a colorful image of Venus, taken by Magellan, a NASA meatball patch, and some text.

Venus appears in shades of the rainbow, which correspond to different planetary radii, measured in kilometers.

The text says, "Presented to Missy Elliott from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Lyrics from your iconic song "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" embarked on a historic journey on July 12, 2024, traveling approximately 158 million miles from Earth to Venus, to become the first hip-hop song transmitted to deep space. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in the fusion of music, technology, and space exploration." Credit: NASA

1. Hip-Hop to Deep Space

The stars above and on Earth aligned as lyrics from the song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” by hip-hop artist Missy Elliott were beamed to Venus via NASA’s Deep Space Network. Using a 34-meter (112-foot) wide Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio dish antenna, located at the network’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California, the song was sent at 10:05 a.m. PDT on Friday, July 12 and traveled about 158 million miles from Earth to Venus — the artist’s favorite planet. Coincidentally, the DSS-13 that sent the transmission is also nicknamed Venus!

2. Lemme Upgrade You

Our Near Space Network, which supports communications for space-based missions within 1.2 million miles of Earth, is constantly enhancing its capabilities to support science and exploration missions. Last year, the network implemented DTN (Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking), which provides robust protection of data traveling from extreme distances. NASA’s PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) mission is the first operational science mission to leverage the network’s DTN capabilities. Since PACE’s launch, over 17 million bundles of data have been transmitted by the satellite and received by the network’s ground station.

A collage of the pet photos sent over laser links from Earth to LCRD and finally to ILLUMA-T (Integrated LCRD Low Earth Orbit User Modem and Amplifier Terminal) on the International Space Station. Animals submitted include cats, dogs, birds, chickens, cows, snakes, and pigs.

3. Who Doesn’t Love Pets?

Last year, we transmitted hundreds of pet photos and videos to the International Space Station, showcasing how laser communications can send more data at once than traditional methods. Imagery of cherished pets gathered from NASA astronauts and agency employees flowed from the mission ops center to the optical ground stations and then to the in-space Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), which relayed the signal to a payload on the space station. This activity demonstrated how laser communications and high-rate DTN can benefit human spaceflight missions.

4K video footage was routed from the PC-12 aircraft to an optical ground station in Cleveland. From there, it was sent over an Earth-based network to NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The signals were then sent to NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration spacecraft and relayed to the ILLUMA-T payload on the International Space Station.

4. Now Streaming

A team of engineers transmitted 4K video footage from an aircraft to the International Space Station and back using laser communication signals. Historically, we have relied on radio waves to send information to and from space. Laser communications use infrared light to transmit 10 to 100 times more data than radio frequency systems. The flight tests were part of an agency initiative to stream high-bandwidth video and other data from deep space, enabling future human missions beyond low-Earth orbit.

The Near Space Network provides missions within 1.2 million miles of Earth with communications and navigation services.

5. New Year, New Relationships

At the very end of 2024, the Near Space Network announced multiple contract awards to enhance the network’s services portfolio. The network, which uses a blend of government and commercial assets to get data to and from spacecraft, will be able to support more missions observing our Earth and exploring the cosmos. These commercial assets, alongside the existing network, will also play a critical role in our Artemis campaign, which calls for long-term exploration of the Moon.

On Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, at 12:06 p.m. EDT, a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket carrying NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

6. 3, 2, 1, Blast Off!

Together, the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network supported the launch of Europa Clipper. The Near Space Network provided communications and navigation services to SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket, which launched this Jupiter-bound mission into space! After vehicle separation, the Deep Space Network acquired Europa Clipper’s signal and began full mission support. This is another example of how these networks work together seamlessly to ensure critical mission success.

7. Make Way for Next-Gen Tech

Our Technology Education Satellite program organizes collaborative missions that pair university students with researchers to evaluate how new technologies work on small satellites, also known as CubeSats. In 2024, cognitive communications technology, designed to enable autonomous space communications systems, was successfully tested in space on the Technology Educational Satellite 11 mission. Autonomous systems use technology reactive to their environment to implement updates during a spaceflight mission without needing human interaction post-launch.

A first: All six radio frequency antennas at the Madrid Deep Space Communication Complex, part of NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), carried out a test to receive data from the agency’s Voyager 1 spacecraft at the same time.

8. Six Are Better Than One

On April 20, 2024, all six radio frequency antennas at the Madrid Deep Space Communication Complex, part of our Deep Space Network, carried out a test to receive data from the agency’s Voyager 1 spacecraft at the same time. Combining the antennas’ receiving power, or arraying, lets the network collect the very faint signals from faraway spacecraft.

Here’s to another year connecting Earth and space.

Wow, haven’t been on Tumblr for over 2 years now xD~ I’ve no idea if people are still following me here; migrated to other social medias by now like me xD;;.  I didn’t really just want to leave it like this though.

I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 fibrosis sarcoma cancer, and the doc thinks I got about 1-1.5 years left. I guess I’m really here to kinda….leave my mark? These are just some of my work from the past few years I haven’t been uploading here :3

I’m more active on Twitter, Instagram and Patreon. Every bit of support helps <3. I’m not sure if I’m ever posting back here, but thank you guys so much for reading.

Odds and Ends

A Ghost Hunt short story,

Noll asked, “Why are you here?”

The boy, older than him but still young enough to look out of place in the spacious SPR office, shrugged. “A test or something? They told me to talk to some doctor. I’m guessing that’s you.”

Noll scowled, but not at the underlying jest of the question. He was used to people questioning his expertise. “Indeed,” he said, “but why are you here?” The question was moot; he already knew why.

The boy sitting across from him was Lyle Mund, a chemistry student from Queen’s College. He was supposedly the catalyst in a series of events stemming from a demonstration of the Light Box and a otherwise unachievable score.

“I don’t know,” Lyle said, “you’re the doctor here.”

Noll sighed. The ‘test’ he was referring to was a rather simple one; guess which light will turn on next. The odds are, more or less, even. Given enough chances, the average human will be wrong 50% of the time. Noll remembered, rather fondly, proving his Japanese assistant was psychic using that very test. Except, where she had failed, Lyle seemed to succeed.

“97% success rate on a game of chance. That is a mathematical impossibility.”

Lyle shrugged. “It was luck.”

“Luck,” Noll said, “is subjective. Do you know what we study here at SPR?”

“I hear your guys in the parapsychology course get to go ghost hunting as an extra curricular.”

It was hard to deny that. All prospect hires at the University we’re invited to study SPR’s research methods. Most the time that included fielding active cases.

Lyle went on, “From what I’ve seen, it looks like you guys are going hard for the modern magician vibe. Card tricks, misdirection and all that.”

“SPR,” Noll started, “stands for the society for psychical research. We aim to understand events commonly described as paranormal. Ghost hunting is a part of that. We study mediumship, haunting, and the manifestation of psychic abilities.”

Noll knew the bemused look on his face well. The arched eyebrow was one of his favorites.

Lyle said, “You mean magic.”

“It’s only magic when you don’t understand what’s really happening.”

“Do you understand?”

Noll didn’t answer.

“I thought you looked the is-this-your-card type.” Lyle laughed, gathering his jacket. “Not interested but thanks for the talk.”

Noll watched him carefully.

On one hand, his skepticism could help them. SPR thrived on the disbelieving. It was easier to dismiss inexplicable phenomena when one didn’t exactly believe in it. Disappearing objects became forgetfulness, disembodied voices traced to a television accidentally left on.

On the other hand, SPR didn’t have a need for psychics unwilling to believe in their own abilities. That left Noll in a peculiar position. He dug in his pocket, flicking a small black and white object between his fingers. What if he could convince him?

Noll set the object on the table with a light chink.

Lyle eyed it sideways, halfway between his seat and the door. “What’s that?”

“One die.” Noll said, “Six sided. Would you like to roll it? Just once, then you can leave.”

Lyle rolled his eyes. “You can’t be serious.”

Noll frowned. He was always serious.

Lyle strode back and snatched the die from the table.

Noll said, “Call out a number.”

“What?”

“Before you roll, call out a number.” He urged, arms crossed. “One through six.”

“Three.” Lyle spit. He was annoyed, but that was okay. Noll just needed him to understand.

The die hit the table, once, twice, and spun to a stand still. Three solid black dots faced the ceiling.

Lyle stared at it for a full minute. “Coincidence,” he said.

“Could be.” Noll agreed, “Why don’t you try again? For good measure.”

Lyle hesitated.

Noll took advantage, reaching into his pocket. “What about two dice?” He set another black and white die beside the first. “The chances of rolling a pair of dice with the same number is 16.7%. That’s not exactly impossible, but the odds are against you.”

Lyle’s dark eyes cut Noll’s but the levity of his stare was something Noll was used to. He waited out the silence.

Slowly, eventually, Lyle picked up both dice, one by one, making a show out of checking they were the exact same.

“Number?”

“Again?”

“It doesn’t work if you don’t say a number.”

Lyle paused, fist over the table. “Three, he said again, “Wait no. Six.”

The dice collided with each other, sending themselves to opposing sides of the table. The die on the left showed six small black dots, the right, only three.

Lyle shook his head. “That’s not possible.”

“Why did you change your mind?”

“I don’t know. It just sounded stupid to say the same thing twice.”

Noll waved a hand producing four more die. “Three dice and the odds of rolling any number you call out falls to 1/36. What are the odds,” he said, setting them down one by one, “of six dice? I’d say there’s around 0.013% chance of guessing all six.”

Lyle laughed. “You’re crazy.”

“Hm.” Noll said. A smirk had already fixed itself to his smug face. “This is what we do here at SPR. We hypothesize, we research, and we gather data.”

Lyle glanced at the dice. “What does it mean?”

Noll blinked. He thought it was pretty self explanatory.

“What does it mean to guess right?” Lyle kept on.

“I guess that makes you a good guesser.”

“Seriously?”

Noll held his chin in his palm. “Call your number.”

Lyle thought hard, gathering the dice in his first. He held it steady over the table. “How many?”

“What do you think?”

Lyle said, “One,” and opened his hand.

All six dice landed in a kind of starburst pattern. They spun and thunked on the table before coming to a staggered standstill. Looking from the table to Noll then back to the table, Lyle couldn’t stop the disbelieving grin spreading over his face. Every dice showed a single small black dot.

“What,” Noll said, “are the odds?”

Chirps, trills, and squawking (blushy mammon?) Growls and snarls! Really anything to do with their animals, the motifs or their stage animals or anything? Scent marking but not just the MC but like mammon rolling in their sheets, Satan making sure their rad workbag smells like him? Claws and fangs! I really just spat out anything but I hope maybe one might inspire! <3 love the writing and I agree that the purring was just so good

The Demon Bros Scent Marking GN!MC!

(Looks at you guys)

Lucifer

Probably the last one that thinks about scenting you, tbh. His pride won't allow it until he knows for SURE that you've stolen his heart.

Probably the last one that thinks about scenting you, tbh. His pride won't allow it until he knows for SURE that you've stolen his heart.

And then you'd better watch out, because he's always touching you from then on in some subtle way. Not too showy, but just enough that it gets his point across.

And then you'd better watch out, because he's always touching you from then on in some subtle way. Not too showy, but just enough that it gets his point across.

And then you'd better watch out, because he's always touching you from then on in some subtle way. Not too showy, but just enough that it gets his point across.

Gently caressing your hair away from your face, subtly brushing his arm against you, pulling you aside by the hips so you can avoid obstacles; that sort of thing.

In more private moments with you, he'll lean into the crook of your neck and rub himself into it, wishing he could just permanently ingrain his scent into you.

You're probably wondering why other demons are avoiding you, but can you blame them? You smell so strongly of Lucifer that it's pretty obvious he wants to keep others away.

Mammon

Boi this demon started scenting you from the moment you made his lil greedy heart go doki doki. The Great Mammon?? Pining for a lowly human??? It's more likely than you think

He was possessive of you to begin with, so things only amplified once he started catching feelings for you. Now he's outright scenting you in front of anyone, whenever he gets the chance to do it.

God forbid he thinks you're spending too much time around the other brothers, because then you're never leaving his arms. He's blatantly scrubbing his face and head against you at every given moment, like an overly affectionate cat

Sometimes he gets so into it that his hair is all messy afterward, not that he really cares. When he's finished, he gives you a satisfied nod before going off to do his own thing.

Be grateful that you smell like THE Mammon now! Though do you really think that's gonna stop his brothers from getting to you-

Levi

It takes him SO long to work up to scenting you. Actually, he probably does it by accident before he even realizes what he's doing.

He moves on instinct, always moving a little closer when you're near him, carefully bumping his head against yours while his eyes are affixed to his tv screen. Might even snuggle against you for two seconds before pulling back.

If you touch his head, he's leaning to press his face into your wrists and lingers there for long enough to make you wonder what's going on.

And when he realizes that you're practically saturated in his scent??? This boy is on cloud nine. It's something so subtle, yet still present enough to let everyone know you're HIS.

That way, he doesn't have to say any mushy stuff out loud! He can just touch you a little, maybe give you his jacket, and you'll be marked for the world to see. It always makes him giddy when he thinks about it.

Satan

DEFINITELY an aggressive scenter. He's not shy about it, openly embracing you when he thinks you don't smell enough like him.

He wants his scent to permeate everything you own, every article of clothing, every pillow on your bed- He wants his presence on you to be known from the moment you wake up.

Not that you can really tell, with your human nose and all. But that's the way he likes it, knowing that he's leaving his mark and you're practically none the wiser (whether you know he's scenting you or not)

In tender moments with you, he likes to hold you in his arms while he reads. Your own scent calms him down, and he doesn't mind if it gets on him. Actually, that's probably exactly what he wants.

When he irritable, all it takes it a whiff of your lingering scent to put him in a good mood all over again. Though, that makes him want to seek you out so he can make sure you still smell like him-

Asmo

At this rate, you almost permanently smell like Asmo. You thought he was touchy to begin with? Just wait until his feelings for you become apparent. Because now he can't keep his hands off of you.

He's always snuggling you when he has the chance, pulling your face into his chest so he can rub all over the top of your head. He doesn't care where you are, who's around, or what time of day it is, because he's GOT to be touching you.

Hell, he'll even spray you with his perfumes sometimes so you have double the Asmo scent.

And he knows his scent is absolutely perfect, so he wants to share it with you! The fact that you smell like him always has him happily humming away, content with the way he's marked his territory.

While Asmo is pretty open about giving his affections away, that doesn't mean he can't be a little greedy sometimes. He LOVES the look on another demon's face when they catch his alluring scent on you, but they know they can't lay a single finger on you.

Beel

He's not shy about the way he shows his affection for you, but he's probably the least likely to scent you. Not because he doesn't want to, but the instinct just doesn't pull at him as strongly as it does for the others.

That being said, he might not realize when he's leaving his mark on you, when he embraces you against him and leans into your neck to breathe in your scent. It puts him at ease and makes him forget about his hunger.

Sometimes it stirs up a different kind of hunger, and he finds that he just wants to hold you in his arms until he's satisfied. Don't doubt that he won't outright pick you up and carry you around the house.

He also likes to put his clothes on you, since they practically swallow you up, and it makes him feel like he's keeping you safe. And afterwards when he hugs you and finds that you only smell like him?? He's thrilled.

When you smell like Beel, his affections for you go through the room and he keeps patting your head, giving you hugs, and trying to feed you snacks. Now you smell even MORE like him.

Belphie

He's a brat, and inherently the clingiest of all the brothers despite not always being so open about it. He keeps his deepest affections for you hidden away in his heart, but that means they all pour out when you two are alone.

His bed obviously smells like he does, so he uses you napping with him as an excuse to get that scent all over you. You always leave smelling like him, and his chest swells with pride.

Belphie can be handsy when he's sleepy and he's always seeking out your affections (because he's spoiled), so one way or another, you're going to smell like him.

He'll hold you from behind and lean into you, rubbing his head against your face. He'll claim your lap as his pillow and snuggle into your stomach. He'll constantly steal the pillows off of your bed and scent them so you smell like him when you wake up

He might not scent YOU directly all the time, but he's a sneaky bastard who's determined to make his mark somewhere, more often on your possessions. One way or another, everyone will know you belong to him.
