92sies Behind the Scenes

it really breaks my heart imagining jack reading those little dime novels. he’s never been the best at reading- the letters get all jumbled and he has to sound the words out sometimes still, so getting new books is both a rare treat and something anxiety-inducing. but he has one, one with a bright cover and cracked spine and worn pages, that he’s nearly memorized. it’s easy to read that one. it’s an old comfort. it doesn’t make him feel like he’s not smart enough to get the words right. it doesn’t feel like he’s making things up when he skims the pages. it’s marked up and there are doodles on the pages and the cover is being held together by a dream. it’s his favorite.

Santa Fe isn't real, that's the whole point. Jack was never going to move out west. He never was gonna leave New York. It's a hopeless pipedream, something he knows he'll never get. If you think of Santa Fe as Jack's allegory for heaven, everything becomes a LOT sadder. Him telling the newsies that he had family there he wanted to see, was he lying or was he talking about his brother and mom? When he told Sarah he planned to leave when the strike was over, to what extent did he want to leave? When Roosevelt gave him the advice that convinced him to stay, did he know what he was talking Jack out of? Was he promising Crutchie something darker than he realized? When he painted the desert for Medda, was he telling her where to find him? Did Jack want escape or did he want death?

today i learned that christian bale tried to get his little dog mojo an appearance on newsies but mojo didn’t like commands or crowds. we could have had jack kelly with a little dog. jack kelly is now a dog person to Me.

a bunch of the newsies do, but jack? hes absolutely horrible. he blames himself for alot of things, every little incident that happens the first finger pointed is to him, his own finger.

another problem with this is he beats himself up for it, he’ll scream and shout on the rooftop, tugging at his hair and pacing around, he quickly shuts himself up as to not wake the other boys. they still hear it, but dont dare to ask whats wrong, because jack wont say anything. he refuses to talk about how he feels.

sometimes he wishes this feeling will go away, he’s desperate. so desperate he wants everything to go away.
