Description: Emotions

Anonymous asked:

Oh good you’re back I’ve been sitting on a question for like two days you are the best!!! I hope asking so quickly doesn’t feel like me jumping you! I’ve looked thru the blog but I can’t find anything on this so: do you have any advice to being more “showy” with emotions? I have a problem where I can describe the current viewpoint character’s emotions in a nice and show-y way, but I have a problem with all the other characters’ because it sounds trite…

Since the purpose of this blog is to answer writing questions, I fully expect to get them as soon as I open my inbox, so no worries. :) <3 When you’re writing about the emotions of other characters as seen by a POV character, you’re stuck describing only what the character can observe or is told. So, start by deciding how much (if any) of the emotion the character is being upfront about. Are they telling your POV character that they’re sad? Do they say that they’ve been crying, or that they’ve just had a bad fight with their loved one? In this case, some amount of the emotion will come across through dialogue and narration, but you’ll want to support it through the POV character’s observations about how the character appears and behaves. Observable physical cues are especially important when a character doesn’t share anything about how they’re feeling or what they’re going through. In this case, it will be up to the POV character to draw conclusions based on observations. Here it’s helpful to think about the physical cues of various emotions. How do you know when someone is sad? What physical cues do you see? Perhaps tears or puffy eyes that indicate they were crying, not smiling, not talking a lot, vacant staring, etc. might clue you in. Have the POV character make these observations and draw their conclusions, or allow the reader to draw their own conclusions. If you can, I highly suggest picking up a copy of The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide To Character Expression by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. This is a super handy book that lists both the external and internal cues of various emotions. The companion book Emotion Amplifiers is free on Amazon right now if you have a Kindle. I haven’t had a chance to flip through the companion book yet, but The Emotion Thesaurus is a fantastic resource. :)

Many of the good angel names include a suffix word meaning of God (-el), or yah, which means Lord.  This way, angel names portray the importance of the angel’s connection with the divine.    Good and fallen angel names are traditionally and even superstitiously viewed as being powerful.

Full offense but your writing style is for you and nobody else. Use the words you want to use; play with language, experiment, use said, use adverbs, use “unrealistic” writing patterns, slap words you don’t even know are words on the page. Language is a sandbox and you, as the author, are at liberty to shape it however you wish. Build castles. Build a hovel. Build a mountain on a mountain or make a tiny cottage on a hill. Whatever it is you want to do. Write.

Types of Opening Scenes for Your Novel

Here are a handful of ways to open the very first scene in your book! There are plenty more to explore, but these are a set of very tried and true methods.

Autobiographic - your protagonist starts the book reflecting or talking about a past event. They’re looking back in time and sharing an important piece of information with the reader.

In trouble/conflict - a problem has arisen for the protagonist and a sense of urgency is established. This can be an intense conflict like a chase scene or a puzzling problem.

Mysterious opening - the reader is introduced to something peculiar (a fantasy location, unique magic, a cloaked figure, etc.) that raises questions in their mind. Their curiosity will keep them reading.

Scene-setting - the most common opening where you focus on introducing the setting and the characters in it before anything else.

The questioner - the protagonist is questioning something: “Who invited the guy in the trench coat covered in red?”

Beginning with a thought - the novel is started with a philosophical quote or meaningful thought from the protagonist. “What is living worth if she’s not doing it with me?”

Intriguing dialogue - the book starts with interesting dialogue that captures the attention of the reader.

Mood establisher - the novel opens with a deliberate mood that signifies to the reader what they should expect from the story. Ex. a spooky story may open with eerie words and a dark atmosphere.

“Oh my god, you’re adorable.” “I wish you’d stop calling me that.” “What - adorable?” Their brow furrowed in confusion.  “Yeah. Like, I don’t know. It’s so babyish.”

“You know adorable doesn’t mean you can’t be kickass, right? You could conquer a kingdom and I’d still find you cute.” They meant it sweetly, lovingly, reaching out a hand to draw her closer. She jerked away with a fresh bolt of anger even when they knew it was ill deserved - because, yeah, that was exactly the problem.

Just once, it would have been nice to beautiful, or powerful, or breath-taking instead of something that made her think of kittens and bunny rabbits. Why did everything small have to be fucking cute?
